  • It’s our annual Halloween podcast crossover and this year we’re delighted to be chatting to the Spooky AF podcast, a local Irish pod that explores all things spooky, paranormal and weird. We hear from Rob and Suz about how their podcast came to be, their favourite Irish pubs (haunted ones…?) and ghostly stories from Ireland.

Lisa and Christina also appeared on their podcast - go and have a listen. And happy Halloween to all you spooky souls…

  • The Glasladies Beer Society is on a mission to connect beer-loving women (and non-binary folk) in Glasgow and this year they’re turning FIVE.  But they don’t just organise regular meetups, they have an annual beer festival too! The Beer is for Everyone festival is happening on 16 November in Glasgow with a focus on inclusivity, from accessibility to allowing kids and dogs. It’s a celebration of Scottish craft beer and culture for the whole family. Part of the proceeds will be going to two worthy charities: Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and The Women’s Centre Glasgow.

Listen as Nix and Kristin talk through some of the Glasladies’ history, how they moved from a meetup to festival organisers and what they’re looking forward to at this year's festival. Get your tickets below, it promises to be amazing!

  • We’re continuing our bumper series of interviews with authors who’ve just released books (that you should absolutely buy…) and this week we hear from Dr James Wright from Triskele Heritage and his work on Archaeological mythbusting. We’re particularly interested in the many claims of pubs having no real proof of their advertised age, as well as how one goes about verifying the claims to begin with. The question always remains, should the truth ruin a great story? A truly fascinating look into building archaeology and what it can reveal.

  • In this week’s episode, Lisa, Thandi and Christina debate an ever-popular topic in beer (and other things!) - ethos. Does the ethos of a brewery influence you to buy, or not buy, their beer? What happens when breweries make good beer, but treat their staff badly, or are divisive in their politics? We chat about a few stories that have been in the news over the last few years, and debate our own feelings on separating art from artist.

  • This week we’re delving into the culture and customs around Irish Pints. Pints in Ireland are not simply having a drink - there are as many occasions as there are colours, and often the Irish customs are led by the occasion, whether wedding, funeral or after-work spontaneous pints. Ali Dunworth has written a marvellous, must-read book called A Compendium of Irish Pints documenting these nuances in a fun,  relatable way, with awesome illustrations by Stephen Heffernan. We’re chatting with Ali this week about the book and sharing experiences of pints. This is not to be missed!

  • Have you ever wondered whether climate was responsible for beer styles emerging? Well, we did! So we’re digging into it a little - with how regional crops led to some of the styles we know today, and whether there is evidence of climate affecting beer historically. We also chat about how globalisation and industrialisation has impacted beer production and our own expectations, as well as how climate change is already (and will) impact beer of the future. Listen in, as we found this one very interesting.

  • We’re rounding off our Women’s Month special replays with Ulrike from Schneeeule in Germany. Did you know that the style of Berliner Weisse nearly died out? Meet one of the brewers who are keeping it - in its most historically accurate form -alive: Ulrike Genz from Schneeeule brewery in Berlin. She tells Lisa, Katie, and Thandi all about how Berliner Weisse should actually contain Brettanomyces, why kettle souring isn’t “the way” and takes us through her own fascinating journey from Civil Engineering to brewing.

  • This week Lisa and Christina chat with Lars Marius Garshol, a Norwegian beer history writer. He has a special interest and has written several books on Farmhouse brewing in Europe. Listen as we learn about how Farmhouse brewing was done, the way it evolved, and why it’s still current and relevant; a few myths are busted along the way.

  • On 1 February 2024, Ireland launched the new return deposit scheme called Re-Turn. It’s essentially a recycling initiative, where you pay a bit extra on your cans (and some plastics) and then get it back when you return them to the Re-Turn “vending machines”. Sounds good right? Well… the beer industry has a lot to say about it, as do customers. This week we chat to Caoimhe from TheCru.ie and Leah from Whiplash Beer to get the inside scoop.

  • It’s St Brigid’s Day in Ireland and we’ve covered her before (S1E14) -but this week we thought we’d give a nod to the other monastic women in brewing, by honouring the nuns that brewed like (and with!) monks. Particularly, we focus on Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century German Abbess who is responsible for many things, including the first (surviving) written history of the use of hops in beer. She sits alongside St Brigid (albeit unofficially) as the patron saint of beer!

Also, listen to what Christina and Lisa have been up to. Books! Blogs! All the things!
