This week the Binary System Podcast team watched the first episode of Arcane: League of Legends season 2. That's it, that's all you need to know; we watched it and it's amazing.

Okay, yes, we also talked a little bit about what we're also watching (Dario Argento and the original run of Frasier) and what we're doing (going to Durham Comic Con and making lots of dragon-themed artwork). But really, this week's episode is mostly about Arcane. We're bummed about who we lost in last season's finale, pleasantly surprised by who didn't get killed in Jinx's attack, and looking forward to enjoying more fantastic animation and most likely getting our freaking hearts broken

On this week's Night Vale recap we're taking about the brand new innovation the venture capitalists have come up with: a ride share where a bunch of people take the same big car, and it goes around to different places and some people get on and some get off (...the bus, they've reinvented the bus. But it's Night Vale so there's also weird non-government agents, blindfolds, and either an angry mob or a pickup game, we're not sure.)

After that Elizabeth sets a record in movie-watching, she finally got around to watching Keanu Reeve's Constantine, only 19 years late! She's kicking herself for not watching it sooner because it's all kinds of fun. Spoiler warnings, but chances are most of you have already watched it at some point in the last two decades.

Finally, Kathryn's on season two of Star Trek: Lower Decks, just in time for the final season to drop, so we've got to talk about how good the show is and how maybe it's okay that it's coming to an end if it means it ends on a high note. Here's hoping.

This week's outro is a clip from Covered in Oil by Broke For Free. (Not the first time we've used this one, but it's one of our favorites so it gets a repeat.)

The episode where we talk about Nazr and Frances' doomed relationship is here.

Happy Halloween! We're officially in the middle of spooky movie season, so this week we're talking about a classic horror film. It's the Exorcist...Three!

Not a perfect film by any means; you can see the heavy hand of the producers who insisted on changing the name from William Blatty's Legion in order to capitalize on the Exorcist name, and then had to shoehorn in an exorcism at the end that makes no logical sense. However, the movie is surprisingly...good? With an interestingly creepy plot, some surprising comedic moments, a couple of good jump scares, and excellent performances by George C. Scott, Ed Flanders, and Brad Dourif (Dourif in particular is not to be missed), this is a fun little experience that's definitely going to be added to our list of Horror Movies We Actually Like.

We also ran across some news about the third season of Good Omens, and then Kathryn wanted to talk about having finally seen the original Japanese Ringu, which led to a discussion of all the ways we still love The Ring. Spoilers aplenty for two movies that are more than a couple of decades old.

The head of Night Vale's new Unnamed Religion Seriously Nobody Ever Says What It Is They All Avoid Telling You The Name That's Not Suspicious At All is in Cecil's broadcast studio, discussing sheep, rudeness, and all the things you've lost in your life, tangible or intangible. It's a lovely selection of Weird Things (that's writer Brie Williams' specialty) and it'd be sweet if it wasn't for the human sacrifices.

What definitely isn't sweet is the final episode of the final (...so far...) season of Mayor of Kingstown. Giant spoiler warnings, because we go through this episode in detail, discussing how dumb Ian is for getting buddy-buddy with a serial killer, how Evelyn is going to get herself killed, how Robert went from our favorite character to "holy cow he's going off the rails and it's ANNOYING," and how much the ending was a total bummer. Not a BAD ending you understand, just not one that's going to make you feel very good.

We didn't actually plan to do a second sit-rep episode so soon. Unfortunately another gigantic event hit the US in the last week, causing a lot of uproar and basically making everyone's lives harder.

That's right, Netflix cancelled KAOS after only one season. It's an unacceptable state of affairs and we demand to speak with the manager!

All kidding aside, Florida was hit by the second hurricane in the space of two weeks, which is exactly two hurricanes too many. Our parents and younger sister Hannah fared pretty well with no major damages - our parents lost power but it just got turned back on yesterday - but not everyone got so lucky, so we're leaving up all of the charity links from the last sit-rep episode.

In addition to ranting about KAOS, this is also an episode about finales, because Kathryn finished season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks and the final episode ever of The Crown. And also the second-to-last episode of Mayor of Kingstown, hopefully of season 3 and not the second-to-last episode ever. You hear us, Paramount? You're on thin ice with all the commercials you run on your paid streaming service, so we better get a season 4 or we're gonna pen a strongly-worded letter to your supervisor.

This week's outro is a clip from Dark and Suspenseful Atmosphere by Universfield.

The World Central Kitchen is providing meals and water to people affected by Hurricane Helene in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.

The Organized Fishermen of Florida is collecting donations for victims of Hurricane Helene.

The American Red Cross is collecting donations for Hurricane Helene relief.

The air's getting cooler and the nights are getting longer, so Night Vale is celebrating with a corn maze and all the fun stuff that goes along with it: caramel apples, pumpkins, laughing, screaming, zombies, acid-filled sharks, and existential dread. Ooo and cider!

As soon as we escaped the rusty chainsaws and applied corn-silk tourniquets (seriously you guys that episode was DARK) we go into more cheerful stuff like Star Trek: Lower Decks, Mayor of Kingstown, and Killing Eve. Okay, those last two are also super dark.

And finally, Kathryn and Nathan watched the first episode of Kaos and really enjoyed it, not realizing that by the time this episode dropped the information would be obsolete because NETFLIX FREAKING CANCELLED IT.

The next Night Vale episode didn't drop early enough for us to do a recap this week, and there's been enough stuff going on that we figured it was a good time to bring back the Sit Rep (With Beers!)

The good news is that Elizabeth is newly-employed and feeling very relieved and grateful (unemployment is scary). The bad news is that the coast of Florida has been beaten up by a hurricane YET AGAIN, with the added bonus of western North Carolina being UNDERWATER. Our hearts go out to everyone dealing with this disaster; we're gonna post links below to some charities you can donate to if you want, because the clean-up from Hurricane Helene is going to take a while.

In lighter news, we're also still catching up on Star Trek: Lower Decks and Mayor of Kingstown. And since it's officially the start of Spooky Movie Season, we're accepting suggestions for horror movies to watch. Gore is not a dealbreaker (but try not to go nuts), jump-scares are always welcome, and weird creepiness is mandatory.

This week's episode features the triumphant return of special guest Hannah Wallace, as she and the East Coast branch of the podcast fight their way through the wilds of Gatlinburg. (But really, they saw a bear and everything!)

As they fill in Elizabeth on their adventures, everybody gets a chance to talk about what we've all been watching lately, and there's an actual theme: shows you can enjoy even if you don't know the story behind it. The Crown works even if you didn't keep up with the royal family; Kaos works even if you don't know Greek mythology; the new Time Bandits works even if you don't know historic events; Better Call Saul works even if you didn't watch Breaking Bad; and Star Trek Lower Decks works even if you were never a Trekkie. But all these shows work even better if you DO know some stuff behind it, which is why making a monument to Miles O'Brien is freaking hilarious.

Spoilers for everything, especially Kaos: Elizabeth figures it's better to spend a season wondering WHEN something bad is going to happen, than spend the season wondering IF something bad is going to happen.

Alejandra Nuñez, Ronnie Sharma, and Nanako Barnes of Mr. Prescott’s 5th Period AP English Class - the protectors of Night Vale otherwise known as the Library Tweens - have decided that they DON'T want to be known as the Library Tweens anymore. They need a new name, something with a little more staying power. This is gonna take some market research, focus groups, and a lot of social media posting. Which means they don't really have time to, y'know, do any protecting while this is going on. Town being terrorized by spectral cattle rustlers stealing everyone's cows? You're on your own.

After the recap, the Binary System Podcast team continues to dazzle the world by catching up on things. Elizabeth's finished the final episode of The Umbrella Academy, Kathryn's almost midway through season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown, and they're both watching (and enjoying the heck out of) more Star Trek: Lower Decks. And that's quite an accomplishment considering - as you can tell from this episode - they have trouble with counting things. And remembering names. And trying to frikkin pronounce words correctly. Anyone else have trouble with the world "rustlers"? Just me? Okay then.

Okay in some respects it's just business as usual around here: Kathryn and Elizabeth have both been watching season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, four years after it first came out, that tracks. But Kathryn just watched the first episode of Mayor of Kingstown season 3, only three months late, what the heck? And Elizabeth just watched two episodes of Kaos and that's not even three weeks old, WHAT'S HAPPENING WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE CONSUMING CONTENT IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME?

Ahem. We like all of those things, of course, and we also discuss heatwaves, restarting your Netflix account, ridiculously charming smiles, and certain people who got in the news for getting snake bit. (We hope the guy recovers, but man alive that really was the shortest line between Fuck Around and Find Out.)

But we do start the episode with the news of James Earl Jones' passing. RIP, James, we hope you know how happy you made all us nerds every time we saw you.

This week's outro is a clip from Snake Charmer by Synapsis.

Correction: Kathryn says the revelation about Ensign Mariner at the end of Lower Decks season one was surprising. She meant at the end of episode one. (There's a pretty fun reveal at the end of season one too but we won't get into that now...)

Surprise! Due to travel delays, lack of any Lore Olympus updates (mournful sigh), and time (and scheduling) just generally being weird, we're doing two Welcome To Night Vale recap episodes in a row!

This week we're getting crafty, so prepare your sunniest room (no windows allowed), grab your best implement (stolen is preferred) and your sharpest table, and let's get to folding!

You'll notice we didn't say to grab any paper. Things will be folded in this episode, but they're definitely not paper. (Evil laugh.)

After the recap of an episode with some delightfully disturbing images, we talked about the things that we're actually catching up on. Elizabeth's almost finished watching the final season of The Umbrella Academy, and Kathryn's watched four episodes of the final season of The Crown. And their thoughts about both of these are surprisingly similar: excellent shows that are still enjoyable to watch but which have a few glaring flaws that really could have been avoided.

Also, Kathryn really recommends the movie "Licorice Pizza", and Elizabeth is enjoying the heck out of "Star Trek: Lower Decks", so you've all got your TV and movie assignments now, hop to.

We knew as soon as we saw the title that this week's Night Vale would feature the return of Deb the Sentient Patch of Haze. But we assumed she'd be hawking several things, instead of just two: a spray that may or may not repel Librarians, and a teleporter that may or not make people explode. Supplies are limited, order today, satisfaction most definitely NOT guaranteed.

After that we jump into an in-depth and VERY SPOILERIFFIC recap of the final episode of Poker Face season 1, which had everything we wanted: plot twists, stunt casting, bridal shower escapes, and penis rings. (Not like THAT.)

Finally we wrap up with a quick mention of the first few episodes of the final season of Umbrella Academy (Netflix Bloat has already set in, also dear lord the barfing scene in episode two) and some complaints about streaming services (if we want to just pay for one episode you should let us so PLEASE TAKE OUR FREAKING MONEY.)

This week's outro is a clip from A Crime in Progress by John Bartmann.

The Binary System Podcast team appears to be on a bit of a roll lately. Just this week Kathryn finished season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown, and both Kathryn and Elizabeth have watched all but the last episode of Poker Face. That's two TV series where we're now less than a year and a half behind!

We've got a lot of thoughts on Mayor of Kingstown: the things we liked (impressive as hell gun battles), things we didn't (cartoonishly evil bad guys, and Dianne Wiest is a shining star who's talents are tragically underused after the first season), and some musings about how messed-up it is that the words "profit" and "prisons" appear anywhere near each other in the same organization.

To lighten things up, we go into an in-depth recap of episode 9 of Poker Face. There was a lot more peril in this episode, and we avoided spoilers so y'all can go watch it for yourself because the twists are fun as hell and it is so nice to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in something.

On a final note: people who never tip the waitstaff and delivery drivers are great big jerks. That is all.

(Heh. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.)

Night Vale has come up with this amazing “ride share” program, and it even has driverless cars! Of course, the ride doesn’t take you anywhere near where you wanted to go, and the cars are only “driverless” because ghosts don’t count. Or do they? Doors are locked for your safety, please stop screaming.

After the recap, you’re not gonna believe this: we finally watched 2017’s Logan. It was exactly as dark, violent, and depressing as we’d been told. We loved it. (Content warning for, oh, death, gore, senility, and getting kicked in the heart, literally and figuratively.)

Finally, Elizabeth has a brief word about Deadpool & Wolverine (it’s super fun you guys, see it in the theater if you can) and we almost ended the podcast on a depressing note (
Neil Gaiman, ugh
) but brought it back around with an episode of Poker Face. (“Exit Stage Death” is brilliant, no notes.)

The gigantic, internationally-known event has wrapped up, with thousands of people having attended, and the whole world's talking about the big reveals and celebrity appearances. That's right, GalaxyCon 2024 in Raleigh North Carolina was a blast.

In all seriousness, while the East Coast branch of Binary System Podcast was going to GalaxyCon, the West Coast branch of BSP was attending San Diego Comic-Con. We've got lots of photos of fabulous cosplay, tips for a fun convention experience (the "Activations" are not worth it, you have been warned), some concerns about the latest MCU casting (Kathryn is worried that Robert Downey Jr. may secretly be sick of yet another MCU acting job; Elizabeth shares the concern, but also feels that since he's getting a dump truck full of cash for the gig he's probably fine), some hopes for the future of the multiverse franchise (maybe we could get another Loki appearance? Maybe there's a universe where Clintasha is actually a thing??!!), and a few feel-good stories about how awesome everyone was at both conventions.

In more surprising news, we actually found some time during all this convention madness to watch a few more episodes of Poker Face and Mayor of Kingstown. Elizabeth also finally finished watching the entire Star Trek: Discovery series, and she's got an in-depth review. It was fine.

So, we're bad at TV and movies.

...oh, you were expecting a "but" there weren't you? No, we're absolutely horrible at TV and movies, which is why this week we're catching up on Poker Face episode one, which only came out a year and a half ago. Before you congratulate us, you should know Kathryn's finally watching 2023's Mayor of Kingstown season 2 and Elizabeth finally watched 2014's The Grand Budapest Hotel.

In the latest installment of our ongoing series "We're Bad At Movies But We Have A Lot Of Enthusiasm", this week we decided to finally watch the 2014 movie John Wick. And we loved it. It's an absolute symphony of beautifully-choreographed violence that takes the ridiculously improbable storyline of "Terrifying former hitman goes on a cross-city murderous rampage to avenge his dog" and makes it work.

Listen in as we sqeee about everything we loved about this movie, including a lot of elements we didn't realize before now that we loved: fixers, unflappable crime doctors, glamorous hotels that are exclusive to dangerous rich criminals, and Ian McShane. We're also still catching up on the second and third seasons of Mayor of Kingstown, but they're not quite meeting the high bar set by Season One, so we may have to switch over to watching the next three movies in the John Wick series. I don't know if you knew this, but apparently they're very good.

Happy 4th of July! Or if you don't celebrate that, happy Thursday. It's time once again for a super quick Travel Edition because we're so busy being crazy jet setters! Either that or we're all celebrating our Mom's birthday and we lost track of time and had to record at the last minute. YOU DECIDE.

Anyway, we had time to talk about a great bar (Revival 1869 in Clayton NC), a great graphic novel (Lazarus volume 2) and a great sequel idea (The Night Manager season 2. Wait, we're actually a bit nervous about that one. We'll call it a "cautiously optimistic" idea.)

It's a short recap this week, since the action for the latest episode episode of Welcome to Night Vale can basically be summed up with "And then there was a battle." We get a weird glimpse into the past (future?) of Kevin from Desert Bluffs, the Library Tweens need to, well, not learn to respect their elders so much as stop treating anyone over twenty as "elder", and Cecil has an awesome distraction, which we failed to mention includes the radio broadcast of the crash of the Hindenburg and the Indiana Jones theme. But mostly it's the battle, and we're still not one hundred percent sure what exactly happened.

In a related note, this marks the twelve year anniversary of Welcome To Night Vale. Can you believe it? Twelve years of us obsessing over this weird little desert town. We're gonna go celebrate by raising a glass and...watching more Mayor of Kingstown. Because we're officially obsessed with that too.

Mother Lauren is sponsoring a citywide cleansing of Night Vale and yes that's exactly as scary as it sounds. Self care is still important, so don’t forget to check into the Maximum Security Spa for a few hours. Or days. Years? Whatever, the good word of the day is TEETH.

After the recap, Kathryn just watched the third episode of the first season of Mayor of Kingstown, which she says has "a yikes of a beginning" and a giant downer of an ending. Elizabeth says it's a shame that the third season so far isn't as good as the first, but it's a little better than the second.

Finally, we wrap up with the most recent Transformers graphic novel, some Hugo-nominated short stories, and one last Lore Olympus discussion (....at least until Rachel Smythe gives us some new content. Pretty please Rachel can we have some new content?)
