  • Alex and Zac tag-team to take on the one and only actor, Honda spokesperson, philanthropist, and soon-to-be-ex-pro wrestler John Cena. They start with a dazzling, if incomplete, list of Cena's accomplishments before moving on to the beginnings of his fascination with torture by British car; the formative influence of Matchbox cars in the mud and Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things That Go; and the evolution from early East Coast hip-hop to the car-flaunting mainstream rap of the 2000s. Cena takes time out to demonstrate a perfect elevator pitch for the BaT model and community before diving back into the difference between Brock Lesner and a 2,000-pound supercar with 1,000 horsepower; the healthy balance struck in his relationship regarding car collecting and safety; humility as it relates to gratitude; finding the reward in running through the gears in his XK120, even without a turn in sight; the satisfaction of gauges arrayed across a wooden dash; a memorable first motorcycle experience followed by his brief residence in a Lincoln Continental; life lessons taught through two decades with his infamous un-Lambo; the difference between an intriguing car and one that just costs a lot; and finally, asking one's self the right questions about philanthropy.

  • Alex welcomes back George Levy, president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, this time with Class of 2025 inductee (and all-around class act) Skip Barber in tow. Mr. Barber's upcoming induction into the Hall of Fame next March will include a private VIP meet-and-greet as well as other priceless experiences for the lucky winner of our current charity auction to benefit the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Skip talks about a modern electric car attempting to break track records around the world; cutting his teeth driving backward as much as forward; his early years of racing a dilapidated Bugeye on less than a shoestring budget before moving on to a string of "someone else's" British cars; being the fastest guy who never "made it"; the beauty of the Formula Ford; and March-ing forward from the unexpected end of his motor racing career to become a storied and successful coach for future greats of the sport. Alex and George then talk about the beginnings of the Hall of Fame, the voting process for new inductees, their museum at Daytona International Speedway, and the power of the can't-buy experiences that only the Hall of Fame can put together.

  • Alex interviews Jay Gillotti—previously the author of Gulf 917—about his new book, Porsche Decades, which seeks to illuminate the first 75 years of Porsche as well as the last 75 years that new fans of the marque are likely more familiar with. They talk about the four-year process of writing the book; switching from historical depth to historical breadth in an effort to also increase the breadth of the Porsche community; correcting a longstanding lapse in one's Porsche experience; how to pronounce "Huschke von Hanstein"; the journey to collectibility that (almost) every Porsche model takes; how to rope Miles Collier into writing the introduction to your book; how writing music informs writing books; and the evergreen nature of a 3.2 Carrera.

Both of Mr. Gillotti's titles can be previewed and purchased at Daltonwatson.com.

  • In BaT Podcast Episode 84 Alex interviews the overwhelmingly knowledgeable Kim Barnes, who is the business development manager for vintage tire fitments at Michelin as well as a concours judge, car and motorcycle collector, and all-around friend of BaT. They talk about her love of cars as a child of the '60s and '70s, stemming in no small part from the split-window Corvette driven by her aptly named second-grade teacher, Miss Passion; keeping an AMC Gremlin trading card for decades until finally acquiring the real thing; starting a Schwinn bicycle restoration business in her mother's townhouse at the age of 12; daily driving an MGB GT for 350k miles; the highly effective, at least for one teenager, automotive product placement in Charlie's Angels; starting out on the auto show circuit at 16; being forced to take Home Ec instead of auto shop in school; the importance of mentoring young people; meeting her husband on a blind date predicated only by their mutual car enthusiasm; her path to her dream job at Michelin; fightin' words about stock vs modified tire sizes; a deep, deep dive into the various ranges of classic tires offered by Michelin; a simplified explanation of the main difference between bias-ply and radial tires; getting into concours judging via her own restored Sunbeam Alpine; tracking her Buell Thunderbolt; and skipping right to the top of the 964 heap.

  • Alex, Randy, and Zac bring New Blood into the New Game. Howard joins the crew after an extended hiatus to recap our largest Monterey Alumni Gathering yet, talking about favorite cars and sandwiches from the event, seeing how "the other guys" do things during Car Week, the ominous sight of too many AMG 6x6s in one place, the continuing search for the perfect Corkscrew shuttle, and two more upcoming BaT events to round out the year. They then move on to the matter at hand: picking the best cars from 1995 in several crucial categories, proceeding to argue about them, and capping them off with a veritable host of honorable mentions.

  • Randy sits down with our first European Local Partner to talk about BaT's growing presence in Europe; the excitement, travel, and friendships that come as a result of life in the classic car business; shared automotive passions; how Kenan got into the BaT game; his preferred international shipping methods; the curiously variable meaning of the word "perfect"; educating sellers about the benefits of transparency; revisiting the scene of a long-ago mishap in a 1750 GTV; some of the business experiences and notable cars that followed; and buying a TR6 on "photos and hope" in 1992.

  • In episode 81 of the BaT Podcast, Alex, Randy, and Zac reunite to Try a New Thing: game time! The One-Year Garage requires them to pick one car from a certain model year for each category: Sports Car, Family Hauler, Truck/4x4, Daily Driver, and Wild Card. They make up the rules as they go along, and along the way discuss local trivia about The Graduate; a two-tone requirement for Randy's future car collection; whether it's necessary to remember the names of one's offspring; dieting to fit in your diminutive daily driver; a little-known fact about the '67 Mustang; an episode-long argument [you're both right! -Ed.]; a heated debate about what constitutes a sports car [you're all right! -Ed.]; how said definition relates to the owner's heart health; and the undying question, "how wild is wild?"

We want to know: What five cars are on your list? Why are our picks stupid? What did we forget about in our race to pick perfection? Let us know in the comments!

  • Alex and Beck talk about usernames versus real names; the benefits of slow evolution and low staff turnover; the downside of not seeing one's coworkers often; the community and variety that make a BaT Alumni Gathering magic (coming up in Pittsburgh and California!); the appropriate qualifications to pick the coolest Corvette; showering awards upon a rental Viper RT/10; Radwood over the years; calling every front-engine Porsche a 928 just to irk Beck; the various ways to repower a VW Type 2; Zora Arkus-Duntov; the struggle to not talk Porsches at every opportunity, reinforced once again shortly thereafter; favorite automotive tuners; the best-looking fastbacks; the most compelling color names; and the most desirable of history's automotive factories to go back in time and visit.

  • Alex and Randy sat down back in February with legends (there's really no other way to put it) of the vintage Porsche world, Vic and Barbara Skirmants of 356 Enterprises. They discussed the reasoning behind buying the same car three times, all for more money than the last; Vic starting out with a '58 coupe in 1963; getting into racing via flag duty at Waterford Hills in Michigan; "meeting" each other at Mid-Ohio in 1988; their mutual lengthy histories driving and crewing at races for decades; the 2022 repurchasing of Barbara's Sunbeam Tiger, first bought by her in 1969; matching owners with the long-lost original transmissions for their cars; the dying art of ring and pinion setup; sticking with what matters in listing photos and videos; the advantages of a country life with everything paid for; the highs and lows of paddock setup at the race track; two cents, or possibly more, about Rennsport; remaking vintage transaxle parts to keep special cars on the road; owning not one, but two Gmund coupes in the '70s, one of which was sold to Miles Collier; and Vic's early days as a refugee from World War II Latvia.

  • Alex has the pleasure of interviewing none other than legendary racing pioneer Jim Hall as a preface to his conversation with president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame George Levy, who has just released a fantastic biography of Hall. The trio talk about the tragedy that punctuated Hall's formative years in Colorado; Hall's first incognito race car experience at 19; going to work for Carroll Shelby right out of college; the Maserati Birdcage; the early Hall photography of Bob Jackson, who would shortly become famous for quite another photo; buying a $2,600 war surplus P-51D Mustang over the phone; crash landing said Mustang into a churchyard; the doctrine of "there's always a better way"; Levy's experience interviewing other greats like Stewart, Gurney, and Penske for the book; overcoming telemarketer stigma to get to the good stuff; the most surprising information uncovered during that extensive research; the six important elements of every F1 car that were all introduced by Hall in the '60s; a writing trial by fire at Autoweek; how to order the book; the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Daytona; the Lancia Stratos as the perfect car for the taller man; and the wonders of happenstance.

  • Alex and Beck (not actually a professor, but himself a former AP photojournalist) go deep into the field of photos on BaT, moving beyond the basics to cover the relationship between attention-getting shots and informational shots; videos as proof of life; parental nurse cosplay; the optimum "pull gear" for a driving video; asset versus opportunity; things to look out for when hiring a pro; experiential photos for mid-auction engagement; the most important aspects of shooting a BaT Alumni Gathering; the perils of attempting rolling shots; a digression into the venerable, quickly appreciating W124 Mercedes-Benz; the wisdom of the seller-provided PPI and the omission of sales fluff; BaT firsts, even after all this time; a major deficiency in Beck's automotive upbringing; the '70s European cars ripe for modification; and automotive camera brand equivalents.

Their talk includes slow revelations about doing what comes naturally; the beginnings of her journalistic career; the advantages of coming onto a new beat as a total novice; avoiding your car being the most interesting thing about you; what the term "car guy" really means (hint: nothing); the importance of not boring oneself; the ongoing saga of modern F1; Hannah's own Bloomberg podcast, Hot Pursuit!; Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este and FuoriConcorso as a double header; touring the old test track atop Lingotto, the former Fiat factory, in Turin; the shocking lack of respect generated by a powder blue C3 in LA; and being in the market for a Rolls-Royce Camargue.

  • Alex sits down with Randy, Zac, and Howard to discuss cars they need to see (or see again) before their inevitable (but let us hope distant) demise; registration slips as keepsakes; makes or models that they've never managed to put eyes on; a theoretical invite to use an Amphicar for its intended purpose; the abandoned cars of Dubai and Detroit; breathtaking finds in museums; the likelihood of the Sultan of Brunei and Sergio Perez being BaT Podcast listeners; dirt track dreams; when it's better to drive than to own; anticipation for the upcoming F1 season, starting with podium position 2; defunct American street circuits; the innate luxury of a '32 Ford hot rod; one (1) dad joke; strong opinions on the XJ220; and the humdrum inanity of driving a borrowed 250 SWB as a teenager.

  • Alex brings on special guest Beck Diefenbach, manager of the BaT White Glove team, to discuss clandestine BaT operations; the differences between White Glove and Premium listings, as well as the differences between WG and other paths to auction; the singular experience of hitting a San Francisco pothole full-bore in a 911 SC Targa; high-end sellers and buyers who are shocked at the low fee structures at BaT versus what they might be used to; various collection highlights in BaT history; the merits of the early impact-bumper 911; dangerous words about the Fox-body Mustang and the SN95 that followed; the terrible greatness of Alex's Thunderbird Turbo Coupe; the curious spec of the final air-cooled Porsche sent to the US market, produced for one Jerry Seinfeld; and training oneself to shut up in the service of one's professional growth.

  • Randy, Alex, Zac, and Howard discuss the undying popularity of the Lexus LFA and various Heritage Edition Ford GTs; Randy's experience at Tour Auto in Paris and the resulting aspirations for next year; Zac's recent adventures piloting hot kei cars in Japan, where the rain is slipperier than US rain and the car scene is otherworldly; hard-hitting questions about the JDM snack scene; the mysterious Edelbrock/Weber carburetor; Howard on seeing new parts of California in air-conditioned comfort on the 2024 Cal Mille, and the appropriate amount of prep time for an Alfa 1900 destined for such an event; opinion-gathering on the modern 935; the extensive requirements and eye-watering labor bill for an alignment on a 996 GT3 Cup car as compared to the street version; the endless, colorful expanse of Luft Air|Water, including a curious proliferation of pink; devising a new PTS-D color class for future Porsche shows; the sudden appearance of a Vector in its natural habitat; and the art of fending off chummy reserve inquiries.
