This week, I give a little behind the scenes of one of the most stressful things to produce about the second YMH Live streaming event with Tom Segura and Christina P during the peak of the pandemic. The idea was to do a live zoom call with Robert Paul Champagne, which turned into a complete logistical nightmare... for my friend Dan Kelley. We had to bring in a hired gun, who was a good friend of mine that decided not to look anything up about RPC before saying yes to the job. He had to babysit and chaperone him for 3-5 hours. On the live show, we talked to RPC for 5-10 minutes. Here's the 48 hours my friend Dan endured to make the zoom call happen for us. -

Today's episode is a critique of a lazily written article by Kerry Howley for New York Magazine attempting to cancel Dr. Andrew Huberman using implied non-complaints from his ex lovers' friends, a lonely basket case of an author, and attacking the ethics of the basic mechanics of podcast monetization. -

This week my guest is Ben Avery. We learn about his journey from dog food monger to podcaster. We find out we both have roots in the Lemon Party, what steps Ben took to teach himself useful skills in order to start taking on clients, and how to find "your people." We talk about the most important traits to have in order to start getting work, how to get better at your craft, and the risks of being in this business for a while. -

The No Jumper podcast network evolved from a blog on Tumblr in 2011 to a podcast in 2016, and later into a network with various hip-hop themed shows. Point and Shoot's is a comedic commentary on No Jumper podcast incidents that got on my radar a few months back. He covered Adam22's meltdown on the @Whatever Podcast, offers entertaining insights and visual jokes. Point and Shoot's relentless roasting of of the No Jumper crew is juvenile but hilarious. He attacks other people on the crew like Sharp, 1090 Jake and Poetic Flakko. Addressing podcast commentators, like Point and Shoot, may amplify negativity, kind of like the "Streisand Effect," so creators should respond tactfully, if at all. Embracing critics, as seen with comedians like Big Jay Oakerson, Luis J Gomez, Dave Smith, Bert Kreischer and Steve O, can defuse tensions and redirect focus to collaboration rather than conflict. -

01:25 Norm MacDonald's early exposure to gambling started in his childhood, where he developed strong skills in games like bridge, Wist, and backgammon.
03:29 Norm's gambling experiences were highlighted on the Howard Stern Show, where he discussed rumors that the movie "Rounders" was based on his life.
05:19 Norm McDonald's gambling adventures ranged from impressive wins, like making $40,000 in a show and turning it into $100,000, to devastating losses, such as losing everything he owned three times.
09:41 Despite having serious gambling skills, Norm McDonald wasn't in it solely for the money or to gamble on sure things; he enjoyed the thrill and the unpredictability.
14:55 Norm McDonald eloquently expressed the allure of gambling in his book, describing it as the moment between placing a bet and awaiting its outcome—a moment of hope and magic.
16:33 Norm McDonald approached gambling with humor, even sharing wild stories like throwing $60,000 into the ocean on the Atlantic City boardwalk as a symbolic gesture to quit. -

We already learned about YouTube ad revenue, but lets look under the hood of how ad reads work in the world of podcasts! We talk about how the function of a podcast has changed over the years. Comedians used to use pods as a driving force to sell more tickets to live shows, but as ad reads came into the picture, podcasts now became revenue generators. We talk about how much money ad reads can generate and thresholds that most podcast reps adhere to, how the whole system works, and how much of a pain it is to find trustworthy podcast reps. -

Today we're talking about the way more-interesting-than-you'd-suspect topic: laugh tracks! We learn about the start of laugh tracks due to the ingenuity of Bing Crosby, Bobby Burns and Charley Douglass. From I LOVE LUCY to Cheers to Friends to Big Bang Theory to The Office, so many of these shows made a decision on laugh tracks and wouldn't be able to go in the other direction if they tried. We talk about the start of producers laughing during podcasts and how my laugh costed Machinima for than $250,000 to try to remove from productions. We review some famous laughs from Stavros Halkias and Ben Avery and what new function they serve in podcasts -

While working at Your Mom's House Studios with Tom Segura and Christina P, I would often catch myself having ridiculous conversations. Sometimes those were with my employers, the staff, but the funniest ones were talking to outside organizations. These are some of my favorite conversations I've had to have. I discuss my experience booking a little person and explaining a baby Jesus bit to a casting director and give a behind the scenes look of how long we were trying to produce the "Pimp My Ride" sketch... also an extra behind the scenes story while filming it! Then we get into one of my favorite phone calls I've ever had. We were going to stream live from the Paramount Theater in Austin and we had to make sure we can do the exact show that we wanted, which was completely off the rails. -

Today we're chatting about why I think the next two years (at least) are going to be rough for podcasts due to an industry correction. Sure, we're having a mini-burst of the bubble in the podcasting industry, but how did we get there? The pandemic created the perfect storm for some podcasts, but is the podcast explosion dying down? It feels like the industry is correcting itself at the moment. Movies and television shows are coming back, and podcasts have more to compete with again. Another contributing factor is that a lot of the companies that were created to assist podcasters are starting to experience big lay offs, cutting support away from the creators that need it most. We then talk about the new Apple iOS update which will create more problems than it solves for an entire industry. Audio numbers will drop, ad rates will drop, and some podcasts just won't be able to deal with that, unless they've created multiple revenue streams. Fun stuff. -

A lot of people are talking about this new Rogan Spotify deal... yes, Rogan got a dumb amount of money to keep publishing to Spotify but not remaining exclusive to them, but niether Rogan nor Spotify are the biggest winners of thsi deal. It's the guests on JRE. The Joe Rogan experience is back in full force on YouTube giving a more robust "Rogan Bump" than the last 3 or 4 years. -

This is a story from back when I was working at WeedMaps over a decade ago. We were getting involved in sponsoring concerts and music festivals and ended up covering a lot of Cypress Hill shows. I share a few stories of how much fun it was to work at WeedMaps, a couple Behind The Scenes stories about some Cypress Hill shows, and how B Real blamed me for ruining his 420 show. It ABSOLUTELY was not my fault. -

Today's episode is about how I got my job at YMH Studios that eventually lead to my position as Executive Producer there. I discuss my journey starting in high school making dumb movies with my friends, to college, where I also made dumb movies with my friends. I talk about my summer internships, the importance of finding a mentor and my first job out of college, running the video department for Weedmaps. But even though it was super fun and I have crazy stories about Snoop Dogg and getting B-Real from Cypress Hill too high for a 420 concert, I moved back to Los Angeles to pursue post production from ground zero and taking gigs along the traditional path of that career. I was able to start taking on better and cooler jobs that ended me up with a full time job at an ad agency where we made cool things consistently, but when I got laid off after a merger, I was left in a pickle and forced to think outside the box. I emailed some of my favorite podcasts and pitched them on adding a video component which resulted with my initial connection with Tom Segura and beginning working part time on Your Mom's House Podcast. I even read all my emails attempting to pitch myself for a job with them. I talk about the 2 year period working part time for YMH Podcast and freelancing at Machinima (where I met Enny) that ends with a full time job offer at the newly formed YMH Studios. -

Today's a special episode. A call had to be made in the 11th hour, which is par for the course for a producer. I'm gonna talk about my experience being a producer at YMH Studios and how mistakes get handled as the team grows. I talk about the different reasons a producer may decide to have parts removed either for technical reasons or otherwise. I then go over some of my biggest mistakes at YMH and some other horror stories along my career. Some you know about, and some you don't. Then I talk about one of the most panic inducing productions of my life: YMH Live 5 with West Palm Beach with Duncan Trussell Guesting with Tom Segura and Christina P. Two big takeaways from this episode: a producer's job is "fixing problems" and WE. DON'T. MISS. UPLOADS. -

More and more of the bigger podcasts have began accumulating louder and louder haters online. Is it people that despise them? Is is people that are upset the show no longer resembles the show they feel in love with? We taker a look at the history of film critics and analyze the barrier to entry to even having your opinion heard. We run through some thought experiments how trolls like to fight online. So where does all this hate come from? My guess is feelings of sunk cost that lead to feeling unjustifiably betrayed. All this podcast hate has created a new scene of content creators, and they'll either feed in to your toxic tendencies, or maybe they'll try to keep it light. Pick your poison and protect Jake Johnson at all costs. -

Tucker Carlson has been around forever and has always sucked while in the public eye, but he's making some interesting moves that might show he's a lot cooler than we all thought. I give a brief history of Tucker's early childhood, his dad and how he got into journalism. We look at key moments from his career including Jon Stewart confronting him on CNN's Cross Fire, debating Bill Nye the Science Guy on climate change, advertisers pulling sponsorships after a comment on immigration, and the Green M & M dressing more modestly. We analyze hate watching, and see if Tucker Carlson is actually cooler than we thought. We analyze his moves with broadcast to X and his show's guests: Kyle Rittenhouse, Jon Daly, Kid Rock, a lunatic that claimed to do drugs with Barrack Obama, and Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood for the Christmas episode. We wrap up with talking about his monetization strategy and who will follow him. -

We're going to talk about the Kill Tony New Years Eve Streams and what this means for the comedy podcast industry. We talk about its founder Tony Hinchcliffe and Brian Redban, the premise of the live comedy podcast, and how it jumped from the World Famous Comedy Store top Joe Rogan's comedy club The Comedy Mothership over in Austin, Texas. I talk about newbies signing up to put their names in the bucket, and what can be in the future for Kill Tony. -

Today we're going to go over the history and evolution of Comedy Roasts. I talk about discovering the Comedy Central roasts with the one they did on Flavor Flav from Public Enemy and Flavor of Love. This is how I was introduced to Anthony Jeselnik and Amy Schumer like the rest of the world. I share my research with how Roasts started in New York at the Friar's Club in the early 1900's, turned into televised roasts with Jonny Carson and Don Rickles, then Comedy Central teaming up with the Friar's Club and airing roasts of Drew Carey, Jerry Stiller, Rob Reiner, Hugh Hefner and Chevy Chase. Comedy Central then went on its own run of roasts with Dennis Leary, Jeff Foxworthy, Pam Anderson, William Shatner, Flavor Flav, Joan Rivers, David Hasselhoff, and Donald Trump. We talk about the legendary Greg Giraldo sets and other notable stars from the roasts, the transition off of television and onto the internet. We talk about Shane Gillis's vicious roast and Whitney Cummings's role in keeping roasts alive. -

Is the trend of comedians making comedy specials a money grab? Let's take a look at a few examples and see if we can determine that. I discuss the beginnings of YMH Live Shows and their evolution. We examine if the 69 Minutes with Tom Segura our of YMH Studios is a money grab. We take a look at the Skankfest live stream and if 12 shows over a weekend is worth 80 bucks. We analyze the the value of the Kill Tony special event streams, how awesome the Gilly and Keeves sketches from Shane Gillis and John McKeever were, and why everyone should take a chance on purchasing content directly from comedians. We discuss if Andrew Schulz's moves with the special he bought back from a streamer (Netflix, probably) was a textbook money grab. We also ask if Chris D'Elia and Louis CK have the same kind of pull. Do they? -

Lets learn how podcasts make money. Content creators have multiple ways to monetize their podcasts. This will be a multi-part series with today's episode being about YouTube ad revenue. YouTube ad revenue has a few variables. One being length of content, and the other being CPM. We talk about demographics that can bring podcasters a higher CPM and some examples of how much some CPM's can get. We also talk about the hardest times to be a youtube content creator... during all of the ad-pocalypses
