It enables other protocols to inherit the security of Ethereum by staking ETH and running the Ethereum protocol correctly. Eigenlayer also introduces the concept of Actively Validated Services (AVS), which consume decentralized trust from the Eigenlayer ecosystem. AVSs are verifiable SaaS (Software as a Service) that provide specialized services on top of Eigenlayer. Economic security is crucial for the short-term trust in blockchain systems, while social consensus operates on a longer time scale.
