We live in a world saturated by sadness. There are epidemics of loneliness and anxiety. Depression is a growing problem.

Itâs not your job or calling in life to make people happy. And despite your best efforts, it would be impossible to do.
All of us in ministry can take heart from the Apostle Paulâs reminder in Galatians 1:10. âAm I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.â
The reality of life (and definitely of ministry work) is that people complain. It may not be good or godly, but it is going to happen. Sometimes, people will even complain about you, to you, or about your loved ones. At times, people will be thoughtless in their comments. Other times, they will be downright rude.
In todayâs episode, we are not going to try to pretend that these moments donât hurt. They usually do. And we are not going to try to brainstorm ways to get people to stop complaining.
But we are not going to let those complaints control how we feel, think, or act. Instead, we are going to look at some practical tips for how you can keep a positive attitude even when people are complaining!
After all, you are not trying to please people, but to please Christ.

One of the most common calls that Christ gives to his followers is that they should forgive one another. Itâs all over the pages of Scripture!
And it is hard.

âCarry each otherâs burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.â (Galatians 6:2, NIV)
It is not of question of IF your ministry will touch someone who is struggling with anxiety. Itâs a question of when, how often, and what will you do to help.
Anxiety is a huge problem in our culture today. And when you are concerned that someone may be struggling with anxiety, you donât need to wait for a diagnosis or shuffle them off to a professional.
As a pastor or other ministry leader, you can help. You are called to help!

âCast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.â (1 Peter 5:7)
As you build relationships with people in your ministry, you will certainly interact with people who are struggling with anxiety.
But will you recognize them?
Anxiety is one of the most common struggles in our modern culture. In fact, itâs so common that many people donât even realize that it is a problem! They donât realize that there is hope. It is possible to experience life without anxiety.
Before you can help someone with their anxiety struggles, you have to realize that is a problem. We have to identify it in order to seek change, pray, and be intentional to move toward healing.
So today on the podcast, youâll find some common signs that someone is struggling with anxiety. These symptoms donât guarantee that anxiety is a problem, but they should raise a flag for you and lead you to reach out to learn more and help where you can.

Ministry work involves helping people through many difficult and painful life circumstances. And one of the hardest is helping people who are dealing with an addiction. There are a lot of ways that pastors and other Christian leaders can help people when they are fighting addiction, but one of the most basic ways is to offer practical, Christ-centered, appropriate resources.
But what are some of those resources?
Here at The iHope Center, that is one of the most common questions we hear from local pastors. So if youâve ever found yourself feeling stuck in how to help someone who is fighting an addiction, you are not alone.
Todayâs episode will not offer miracle solutions. We are not medical doctors, nor do we specialize in addictions counseling. But we will share some helpful, practical resources to get you started!

Many of us think we are better listeners than we really are.
But there is a reason the Bible tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19). Listening is powerful and important. And the reality of human relationships is that being a GOOD listener does take some intentional effort.
Itâs more than just hearing the words someone is saying. Itâs more than just finishing a conversation. And if we are in ministry, trying to care for others and show them the love of Jesus, it is especially important that we truly are quick to listen⊠and that we listen well.

One of the most common things that Christian counselors help clients with is getting their thought life more in line with Philippians 4:8.
When someone is stuck in negative thinking, it is not honoring to God and not helpful to their relationships or emotional health. And guess what? Pastors and ministry leaders struggle with their thinking too!
In our last episode, we looking at the 5 Râs to turn your thoughts around and stop the negative thinking. Today, weâll dive deeper into one of the hardest steps there: replacing the negative thought with a positive thought. Not a fake thought. Not an unbiblical self-affirmation. A true, good, noble, beautiful, helpful thought⊠one that is more in line with Philippians 4:8.

At some point in life, everyone will struggle with conflict. The church is not immune! Even in the best ministry, there are different personalities, priorities, and preferences. Conflict will happen.
So whatâs a pastor or leader to do?
Of course, the top urgency is to start with prayer. Pray for the other person, for the situation, for your own reaction. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. Seek to understand.
