In this interview, I speak with Jane Tillman, PhD, ABPP, about her work at the Austen Riggs Center. The Austen Riggs Center is an internationally renowned therapeutic community, open psychiatric hospital, and center for clinical education and research—a place that promotes personal resilience and self-direction in adults (18+) with complex psychiatric problems.

I made a comment about Jung stopping therapy for anyone who joined a religious community. It would be more accurate to say: For some individuals, the structure of a church or religious community acts as a psychic container—a supportive framework for their inner experiences. If a patient found solace and growth within a religious context, Jung was content to conclude therapy. Returning to or joining a religious community could signify progress on their individuation journey. But Jung soon realized that for many, if not most, of his patients, this return to religion was no longer psychologically or spiritually possible, and that he would therefore need instead to aid them in creating a more meaningful life for themselves outside and beyond conventional religious systems.

Join me as I speak with Mary Vieten, PhD, ABPP, and we discuss Warfighter ADVANCE. Warfighter ADVANCE offers relief and clarity to warfighters. Instead of prescribing powerful medications that often compound or mask the underlying problem, Warfighter ADVANCE teaches new coping skills and equips warfighters for recovery and successful reintegration. The ADVANCE is, at it’s core, a 7-day program that uses a variety of means to change the trajectory of the Warfighter’s (active duty or veteran) post-deployment life, so that rather than an existence characterized by an endless cycle of mental illness diagnoses, medications, medical appointments and disappointments, the Warfighter has a life characterized by pride, productivity, healthy relationships, continued service, and advocacy for the same outcomes for their fellow service members.

Sanford Drob, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, who was formerly part of the Core Faculty of Fielding Graduate University where he served as Director of the Forensic Psychology Concentration and taught humanistic psychology, history of psychology, and psychological testing. He is currently on the faculty at the C. G. Jung Institute and Foundation of New York City. Dr. Drob holds doctorates in philosophy from Boston University and clinical psychology from Long Island University. He maintains a practice in clinical and forensic psychology in New York City. For many years he served as the Senior Forensic Psychologist and Director of Psychological Assessment at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

Dr. Drob is also recognized for his writings on the psychology of C. G. Jung and his books and articles which interpret Jewish Mysticism from a contemporary philosophical, psychological, and comparative point of view. In the latter writings he challenges the dogma of theological orthodoxy and understands mystical symbols as providing the basis for an “open economy” of thought and experience, and a charge to mend both one’s soul and the environment.

Dr. Drob is also a narrative artist whose paintings re-signify biblical and historical themes from a contemporary philosophical and psychological point of view.
