  • In today’s podcast Kate goes solo (don’t worry Becky will be back next time!) with Annika O’Kane author of The Pretty Pony Once Said: A Heart-warming Rhyming tale about the Nature of Horses for Children - ideal Book for Kids who Love Animals!

Kate talks to Annika about her 40+ years in the industry and where her inspiration came from for her book. We also chat about the importance of this book in the movement toward educating children and young adults to understand horse behaviour. We go onto discuss how through this understanding children and young adults can stay safer.

As always, an enthusiastic conversation follows with a few tangents.

We finish up looking to the future and discuss some ideas Annika has for her next book! It was an absolute pleasure to have Annika on the podcast and we look forward to having her with us again!

  • Welcome back! It's been a while :)

In this episode Becky chats to the fabulous Sarah Johnson one of Little Green Stables valued Patreons about horse agility. Sarah lives in Switzerland with Kenda her horse who is of a similar age to Becky's Rum.

Becky has just started training agility with Rum and all this training and more can be found over on the Patreon site. Sarah and Becky discuss the obstacles, how beneficial they can be for both humans and horses and how agility training can really suit R+ and clicker trainers.

This is just Part 1 and Sarah and Becky wanted it to be an informal chat from lay trainers about how they find adding in Agility for their equines.

For Part 2 Becky and Sarah are joined by Kate Blackmore from Equilogical and Equischolars and Trudi Dempsey: Equine Trainer and Behaviour Consultant to help break down the obstacles, chain them, train them, adding stimulus and all the details that we know we need them for.

Hope you enjoy and please don't forget to share, like and subscribe.

  • We had so much to say about Sweetitch that we needed a part 2! We chat with the awesome Maisie and Vicki about how they manage their horses Skylark and Stevie with Sweetitich.

We agreed that we all support our horses slightly differently within different environments. There doesn't seem to be one way, being supportive of each other and giving each other ideas, helps.

Kate and Becky will be back monthly with podcasts but you can catch up with us in between on Social Media: Little Green Stables and Equilogical. You can find all our training content on: Patreon/littlegreenstables

  • Well Kate and Becky are back! We won't be weekly but we are back and on this podcast we are joined by the fantastic Maisie Wake and Vicki Honer talking all things Sweetitch.

Both Maisie and Vicki have horses that suffer so we chat about how we manage our horses through the months where Sweetitch is so very tricky.

We covered lots but ran out of time, so keep a listen out for part 2!

    It's great to be back.

Don't forget you can find us on social media: Little Green Stables and Equischolors.

All our training content and so much more is over on our Patreon channel for just £10 per month: Patreon/littlegreenstables

  • Today we are joined by Immy, (a student of EquiScholars) and Claire, Thrive Practitioner and Immy's mentor from the Conquest Centre.

15 year old Immy is one of the original Equischolars and tell us about how she got into horses, how she learnt and then dealt with relearning! As an avid rider, a knowledge in equine behaviour has changed the way in which she looks at common behaviours and now asks what is happening, rather than an interpretation of the situation.

Claire give us some great insight into the importance of connecting with our learners (both horse and human) and how this is the first step in being able to do vital equine therapy work.

We thoroughly enjoyed chatting and feeling all the positive vibes for our future stewards of the horse!

  • Today we talk about how we can further our training and learning with our equines when the weather is against us. This week in the UK we have been hit with snow, wind and rain which makes it difficult to spend time and work with our horses but do not fear, there are always things we can do. Maybe doing nothing is actually what you need to do with your horse right now, maybe some enrichment might be needed for a shut down horse or maybe some basic husbandry skills.

Whatever it may be, take a listen we hope you enjoy!

  • For the first time in a while it is just Kate and Becky! It's been a long time since we have caught up properly as we've been busy bees!

We review our guests so far this year who have all been so fabulous! Becky talks about her recent holiday and the challenges we face when leaving our animals in the care of others and what happens when something goes wrong.

Becky lets us know about the books she has caught up on and some interesting discussions on octupae/octopusses?

It's a very light hearted conversation this week with the predicted tangents of course...

  • In today's podcast we are joined by the ever wonderful Trudi Demspey, Equine Behaviour and Training Consultant. We had decided to talk about planning, which we do at points throughout but there were a few tangents that we just had to discuss, staying motivated in our training, considering emotions during training, what to do if you are finding it difficult to get into your training sessions and so on.
An open and honest conversation with lots of laughter. Enjoy!

  • If you haven't heard us talk about Gabriel before then where have you been? :-) He's a vet, IAABC certified (CHBC) and all round awesome person!

Gabriel was part of an undergraduate research study in to create an AI system that can be used by vets to recognise if pain in present in the horse; Pain assessment in horses using automatic facial expression recognition through deep learning-based modeling. You can find the study at https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0258672

Gabriel tells us how they gathered information from stallions pre and post castration to build up the comparison profile for the system with brilliant results. There are many signs that horses show when in pain and this study looked at only facial expressions in order to be able to work on an AI system.

We also talk about Gabriel's interest in equine behaviour as a vet and how the disconnect between neurology and physiology seems pretty crazy to some of us, his plans for his PhD, his new baby (horse that is :-)), horses in Brazil and much more!

We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did making it! You can follow Gabriel on Instagram at vet.gabriel.lencioni

  • This week we caught up with the awesome Shawna Karrasch and her partner in crime Jessie Hillegas! These guys are doing so much work to raise awareness over in America and have hit the road. You've probably seen a lot of posts on facebook from them as their mission is to raise awareness in the competitive world which is no easy feat!

Shawna and Jessie tell us about a really exciting project they have coming up with a big hotel (don't worry we'll be chatting to them again soon to find out how this went) and the many many other things they are doing to get out there and start really important conversations in a world where +R is either not commonly known or is misunderstood.

Of course we catch up with Henley and Santino and their super important work as flagship horses! We talk about training tools (including scooters and bells) and what lessons have been learnt along the way.

You can find out more at www.shawnakarrasch.com or join their Patreon warts and all! :-) at www.patreon.com/shawnakarraschequine

  • This week Kate & Becky talk to Ella Bartlett from Bristol University about her recent study into horse training. Ella is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Bristol, where the aim of her project is to better understand how horse owners decide which approach to take when training their horses.
The hope is that this knowledge will mean we’re in a better position to promote the wider use of evidence-based training methods in the future.  You may have seen the study on social media, the study has now closed & Ella is collecting data with a fantastic response from all around the world. Ella discusses some of the findings & gives us a few teasers (the full data is still being collected). You can contact her for the details of the study: [email protected] & we are keen to have Ella as a guest on the podcast again.
Alongside studying, Ella works as a part-time lecturer on an Animal Behaviour & Welfare degree delivered by Kingston University, teaching mainly welfare & research.
Outside of work/ studying Ella has four horses, including formally feral Welsh pony Bob, who’s slowly learning about life around humans. We talk about Bob & his curiosity & how we can help Ella progress with some ideas & some support from our fantastic team on our Patreon Site.
Ella is a valued Patreon member so will receive the benefits of having feedback from both Kate & Trudi during our Dempsey Sessions as well as learning from all our training content.

  • In this week's podcast Becky & Kate are joined by the wonderful Emma Bettridge & we discuss her recent book: Goodbye Hobbs. Emma talks about the inspiration for her book & how writing it & being around animals has helped support her through coping with grief. A book aimed for children to help them through the journey of loss but Kate & Becky feel this book is for everyone, we all need a copy of Goodbye Hobbs!! It's a beautiful read, simple & needed with wonderful illustrations.

We chat lots, about growing up around animals, learning from animals & some of you may find our rambles rather emotional but we hope that we also offer support & honesty as we discuss how important observing & just breathing our animals in can help us.

Emma lives in Somerset with her 2 beautiful dogs & has horses too. A Theatre Producer & Arts Consultant by trade, Emma has more books on the way!!

You can buy your copy of Goodbye Hobbs from Bookshops & Online.

  • A different take on todays podcast! After publishing the "decide to dismount" short video on her fb page, Becky received a huge amount of comments both positive and negative. We decided that it was important to answer some of the many questions that arose and address some of the more negative comments. It can be so easy to comment on people's videos but are we being helpful? Are there better ways to express our feelings online?
Trudi clarifies the fundamentals of the training; Did we use reinforcers? Is it actually negative reinforcement on the mat? How was the mat trained? Is the rate or reinforcement too low?
A lot of commenters believe that, if given the choice, their horse would choose not to do the work. The three of us talk about this a little more in depth, is that actually the case? Was it the case for Reg? Is there a compromise when we have to exercise our horses for weight management?
Lots and lots of great discussion, you don't want to miss out on this one! If you are enjoying our podcast please share, like 👍🏻 and subscribe. You can find Kate, Becky and Trudi on social media. For our training content and so much more, join us on Patreon/littlegreenstables

  • In this weeks podcast we discuss kids around animals! Are kids really safe? Is PPE enough? What's missing in the current mainstream equine education and ways in which we can better promote safety around horses for everyone!

We touch on other species and the work being some to protect both animal and human and how in being animal owners we have a duty to represent them in a fair and unbiased way.

  • In this weeks episode we chat to Irene Perrett MA, Cert Ed., BHS IV SM from Drayford Equine Learning and Fun or DELF for short. Irene tells us about her latest distinction grade MA at Exeter University on

We discuss the human animal relationships around the world and how different cultures view and how animals fit into their society. Animals have different jobs all over the world and when it comes to equines there are some stark contrasts in how we view this in the Western world and how having a more holistic view which looks into the balance of all things living including nature could mark big steps into the emotions and welfare of the animals in our lives. We go on to talk about the importance of focussing on the relationship we have with individual animals rather than the goals is key into creating trust.

We were joined by a group of ducks who had a lot to say on that matter so you may want to join in on that chorus! :-)
