  • Whoop we made an episode!! After a long hiatus, Julie & Phoebe discuss the challenges they've faced in balancing art, life, and other responsibilities. We reflect on the difficulties of staying connected and maintaining a creative practice amidst busy schedules and personal obstacles. Despite these challenges, Phoebe talks about recent efforts to carve out studio time, the emotional rollercoaster of feeling like an artist, the pressure of social media, and the small victories in reconnecting with their artistic identities. Julie talks about her new podcast, "The Creative Kind," and how it offers a different perspective by interviewing other artists. They also touch on the importance of community and support, highlighting how connecting with others facing similar struggles can be validating and motivating.

  • This week we are chatting about perceptions. Phoebe recently reached a milestone and tipped over 100,000 Instagram followers, so we chat about how this came about after a long time little growth. We discuss how this number is a bit like being ‘rich in Monopoly’ and doesn’t mean instant sales or success. We delve into how it is impossible to predict when a reel will go viral, and also how follower count can impact people’s expectations and perceptions. We both have different ways of communicating using Instagram, but the one key similarity is that we never stray from being ourselves - sharing in a way that comes most naturally to us - and we both agree that using it to keep an up-to-date portfolio of work and building a genuine connection with your audience is far more important than follower count number. We also talk about what to do when you feel like there’s “no point” in posting because of the algorithm, and what holds artists (ourselves included) back from posting, such as worrying about how others perceive you and your art.

We hope you found this week’s episode interesting, please let us know your thoughts and any questions it raised.

  • This week we are chatting about how we reboot or start new artworks and art projects. We discuss the ways that we have failed at this in the past, by jumping in too quickly and not fully allowing ideas to develop, and how we both want to get better at pausing before rushing ahead. When thinking about planning, it’s no surprise that Julie is more of a spreadsheet user and Phoebe tends to use her less reliable ‘mind map’ system
We also discover the ‘interesting’ way that Phoebe visualises a year.

We hope you enjoy this chat, please share with us how you like to plan and restart!

  • It’s been a minute since we sat down to record, and we just about forgot how to do it! This episode sees us catching up with the big life events that have been the reason for our absence. Phoebe’s trip to the UK and Julie’s visit back to Australia for her solo exhibition. We chat about the highs and lows of the past couple of months, barely scratching the surface, but at least we know there will be more episodes to come!

That you for sticking with us whilst we took a pause

  • After our ‘Finding gallery representation’ episode we had a bunch of interesting questions from you lovely folks that we definitely wanted to dig into deeper and answer, but we also weren’t sure we were the best people to answer them which is where the idea for this episode came from! We wanted to interview a curator and ask her your questions. We feel we were incredibly lucky that Amber said yes as she was so generous and helpful with the information she gave, we felt we learnt a lot, and we hope you do too!

  • This week we revisit the topic of art style. We dig into the difference between style and genre and discuss how our art styles have emerged, and where they continue to evolve. We discuss the pros and cons of wanting to try ‘everything’ and how some people seem to display a style from the get-go. Julie talks through the differences between her two styles of painting, but doesn’t want to be pigeonholed, and Phoebe shares her S.T.Y.L.E acronym that explains how her style is evolving and what things she’s let go of in order to grow. We realise that a style is not a thing that you arrive at but a continually evolving process!

  • This week we thought we’d try something new, so as the title suggests we asked the listeners to throw some questions at us. From our favouring artists to our favourite colours, there’s hopefully something of interest for you to listen to as we witter on... Full disclosure, we asked for questions aimed specifically at either of us but ended up just having a big ol’ pile that we picked randomly from. So sorry if we asked the wrong question to the wrong person, or if we didn’t manage to get to your question, we might just have to do another Q&A episode down the track! Keep the questions and fails coming, you can DM us a voice note @faillikeanartist on instagram and we might just play it out on the pod - Imagine that!

  • This week on the pod we discuss the tricky subject of comparison and competitiveness. We both admit to having these feelings especially during recent times when sales have been slower, and talk openly about how it makes us feel, and how we manage things when the green eyed monster inevitably does show up. We both realise that it is completely normal to feel a level of competitiveness and comparison, and it’s not about trying to quash that, but it’s what we do with those feelings that matters. We share personal anecdotes highlighting times when we’ve caught ourselves comparing, feeling jealous when we see fellow artists succeed, and how feelings of envy can actually be signposts towards growth. We chat about the negative impact of using others’ success as a metric to compare ourselves to, how to manage social media and stop the doom scroll
and how it’s far better to lean into community rather than see others as competition.

So if you’ve ever compared yourself to other artists and feelings of scarcity are creeping in, you’re not alone! This episode is one for you.

  • In this episode we discuss forming relationships with galleries and interior stores. From finding and approaching a gallery (specifically how we have approached them), and what to do if you get the ‘dreaded rejection’ email or worse still - totally ghosted. It’s a bit like the dating game really - just like finding the right partner involves figuring out compatibility, communication styles and looking for someone who supports you, finding the right gallery who you connect with and one that supports your growth in a way that feels aligned with you is very important. But it’s not always an easy journey - of course there’s always going to be times when things don’t work out, so finding a gallery does take resilience! Of course, we only have our own experiences to draw from, and we share what we feel are some things to consider. However, we have future episodes planned where we actually talk to some experts to get the inside knowledge!

  • Well what an exciting episode - for the first time we have a co-host on the pod, the wonderful Laura Horn! We had a lovely relaxed chat with Laura, who is such an easygoing person full of so much knowlege and art biz wisdom.

We ask Laura where she is on the Fail Scale, and chat to her about why she hasn’t released an episode of her own podcast ‘The Laura Horn Art Podcast’ in almost a year. She reveals to us her biggest failure - and how that inspired a big change of focus that lead to a very successful but different type of revenue from art. We chat about how she has managed to step away from social media but still have her art business thrive, and her plans for her new art and recording cottage studio!

Thank you so much Laura! xx

  • This week on the pod we’ve both had fairly stressful things going on, which has led to some fwobbles and generally feeling like we are running on empty. So we end up chatting about how to apply self care during times when, well, there doesn’t seem to be time - and you realise there will never actually be enough time unless you make it. That led us onto the subject of time management where we discuss different strategies such as ‘paying yourself first’ and how we manage (and fail to manage) our time.
