  • We made history running the very first vegan group trip to Japan, and it was a huge success. While Buddhism-inspired vegetarianism has been part of the Japanese culture since around the 6th and 7th centuries, "veganism" as a concept is very new. In this first episode, I provide a frame through which to understand the challenges and the threads of eating plant-based in Japan, including

the influence of Buddhism and other factors that resulted in a mostly plant-based culture for most of its history how the move toward modernizing Japan β€” as of 1868 β€” contributed to the increase in meat consumption the regional aspect of Japanese cuisine the "foodie" aspect of Japanese cuisine, which can also lead to food rituals and ceremonies, as well as fodder for satire

I also provide a number of suggestions for what to look for generally if you are traveling in Japan as a joyful vegan, including

which items typically have animal products what and how to ask for vegan options where to find the best options as a vegan

    Enjoy!

  • WARNING: This podcast episode contains only good news! Despite the tragedies of 2023, there were also numerous reasons to celebrate. And I’m here to share some with you, especially as they relate to animals and nature. So, stop doom-scrolling and start joy-browsing as we explore some good-news stories from this past year.

The term "doomscrolling" was coined in 2020 to describe the habit of compulsively consuming distressing news. Not surprisingly, research spanning several decades has consistently cautioned against the potential detrimental effects of excessive exposure to negative news.

To help prevent the kind of burnout that comes from focusing only on what's bad in this world, I'm hosting a 3-hour-long online workshop called Preventing Compassion Fatigue: Avoiding Burnout, Cultivating Resilience, and Practicing Self-Care ...all while being an effective advocate for animals. • Abstaining from meat, dairy, and eggs during religious holidays has been a tradition for centuries in many religions. In Christianity, for example, during Lent (40 days prior to Easter) and Advent (40 days prior to Christmas), Christans were once forbidden to consume ANY animal flesh as well as as dairy, cheese, and eggs.

In today's episode, we explore this history and demonstrate that not eating animal products was more common than not, especially during the period of contemplation and contrition leading up to the holy days of Easter and Christmas.

I share my own experience growing up Catholic, my memories of Fish Fridays, and the meaning of a common English word whose origins are steeped in religious abstinence.

  • On the one hand, "Jewish cuisine" or "Jewish food" is difficult to define, because it is influenced by the foods in the many countries where Jews have emigrated to, and it's as diverse and adaptive as the Jewish people themselves.

On the other hand, there is indeed something we can call "Jewish food," characterized by a rich tapestry of flavors, ingredients, and cooking techniques, and influenced by the dietary laws and culinary traditions found in Jewish religious texts.

Jewish cuisine celebrates diversity while at the same time serving as a unifying element for a community that has been dispersed all around the world.

Let's explore this together in today's episode.

  • Many people think of β€œveganism” as a new reactionary trend against what we call factory farming, but for centuries, men and women have been thinking about, writing about, and expressing distress over the violence inherent in killing animals for human use and consumption.

My personal veganism is part of a long continuum of men and women – from ancient times until today – who stopped eating animals (and their eggs and milk) not because they witnessed a modern, mechanized, industrialized factory system but because they didn’t want to be part of the brutal and unnecessary process of turning sentient animals into butchered bodies.

  • In today's (as always ad-free) podcast episode, your host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau explores the profound concept of magnanimity and its application to everyday living, drawing inspiration from the teachings of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas.

Delving into the philosophical roots of magnanimity, we unravel its significance in fostering personal growth, resilience, and compassion in our daily lives.

Drawing inspiration from historical figures and modern examples, we explore how magnanimity β€” defined as a generous and noble spirit β€” contributes to living a compassionate life.

β€œIt is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses...There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal.” ~C.S. Lewis
