"A Russian-Canadian filmmaker gains unprecedented access to follow a Russian Army battalion in Ukraine." says the the films IMDB.
The documentary Russians at War was suppose to have its North American premier at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Friday the 13th 2024 but was paused on the Thursday; in what the festival called "an unprecedented move".
The filmmaker is Anastasia Trofimova, and she says her film is an anti-war film.
The Ukrainian Consul General Oleh Nikolenko says its propaganda and "Russian propaganda must be contained, not promoted in theaters.".
Even the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland weighed in saying "It's not right for Canadian public money to be supporting the screening and production of a film like this." This is do to the fact that the film is a co-production between France and Canada and has been made with Canadian tax dollars and Tax Credits.
So is it propaganda?, Should TIFF have paused it? Should you see it?
