Ever wondered how Bayard Rustin, a key figure in the civil rights movement, managed to organize one of history's most significant protests, the March on Washington? Why did he believe so fervently in the abolition of violence and normalization of conflict? Today we're going on a journey through Rustin's life and lessons as portrayed in the upcoming Netflix movie, Rustin, with the brilliant actor, Coleman Domingo as Bayard Rustin. I'll share my encounter with Coleman and how his embodiment of Rustin made it feel as though I was meeting the legend himself.
Now, imagine being able to handle conflict at three different levels, with the finesse and grace that Rustin did. We bring in the experts from Death Penalty Action, including Charles Keith (Impacted Communities Liaison), Abe Bonowitz (Executive Director), and Alli Sullivan (Communications Coordinator), who enlighten us about their involvement in the fight for abolition and the reality of abolishing the death penalty. As we discuss the upcoming five executions, we stress the importance of educating ourselves on this issue to join the fight and encourage listeners to proceed with an open mind, albeit a trigger warning for those who might find the discussion uncomfortable.
As we progress, we discuss the systemic injustices and racism within the death penalty, shedding light on the outdated execution methods, lack of transparency, and the disproportionate execution rates of people of color. We round off the episode discussing the status of the death penalty in the United States, and the importance of advocacy and community to bring about a transformation. Think the political landscape has been changing? You're absolutely right. Today, we're peeling back the layers on the seismic shifts and the potential impact on the 2024 elections. Our deep dive into The Washington Post data reveals a staggering 32 million new voters in the past eight years, coupled with a dwindling older population. The question isn't if these changes will influence the election, but how. We also shine a spotlight on the often-overlooked census, detailing its vital role in painting an accurate picture of our nation's racial and population shifts.
What if the success of movements was less about size and more about conversation? In a world echoing the mantra 'bigger is better', we challenge that notion passionately. Engaging one-on-one conversations can be a powerful engine of change and leadership growth. We discuss strategies that can make participation in movements less daunting, focusing on process simplification and resource provision.
Finally, it's time to talk about democracy. Engaging responsibly isn't simply choosing a side. It's about creating meaningful change, weaving a strong community fabric, reading widely, and holding ourselves accountable. It's about the discipline of timing in politics, examining the practicality of forming a third party. We get real about the New Georgia Project and their exemplary efforts in civic engagement. In a world that often appears divided, we need to remind ourselves of the shared goal: a democracy that works for all. So, are you ready to gear up for the upcoming election?
