The game has been called “a model of decorum and tranquility”, and “religion plus finesse”, both quotes from Tim Rice, Benny Andersson, and Bjorn Ulvaeus’ musical “Chess”.
So we talk about both.
From the opening moves in Merano, Italy, to the Endgame in Bangkok, we find the game and the musical both mysterious and intriguing.

This week, we read the novel by Robert Bloch and then rewatched the timeless classic horror film, chocolate syrup and all!
From the nail biting suspense of Miss Crane's flight with the stolen money, to Norman's assurance that “a boy's best friend is his mother”, the film transcends the horror genre as practically a perfect picture.

At one point during the recording of this episode, we said that someone could do well by opening a Halloween store that exclusively sells costumes of characters portrayed by Johnny Depp. What more can I say? That is why we geek out about the guy!

The concept album from My Chemical Romance tells the story of “The Patient”, and his journey through the Afterlife. This album was of that really spoke to many of a certain generation, with its plethora of intriguing lines, direct and metaphorical imagery, and powerful musical mastery. “If life's not a joke, then why are we laughing?”

As she recommended this topic to us, our friend Shauna joins us in discussing the beloved children's animated series. We talk about the cosplay we've seen at FanX, as well as the panel commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the show. Also, with the music, the Americana setting, the depth of the characters, and how the show perfectly captures the vibe for repeat Autumnal viewings.

Once again, we record most of our episode live at Utah's own comic convention, FanX. we recap the panels, the celebs, the cosplay, purchases, and just sheer, overwhelming fun that it is to attend this con!
Also, once again, we drink several pints (IT COMES IN PINTS?!?) of a variety of Wild Bill’s soda, their root beer dominate among them.

Sometimes, the weather and the mood just need that ambient accent of Folk-Celtic Fusion-Medieval-Rock music, ya know? Autumn just feels like the right time for Loreena McKennitt, Blackmore's Night, Lord of the Dance, and many of the other music styles we talk about in this week's episode.Today's root beer is Filbert's.

The third novella by Stephen King from the Different Seasons collection is arguably the go-to for nostalgia in film. Following the four perfectly cast boys as they follow the train tracks towards the end of summer, childhood, and the body of a fellow youth, we can remember our own experiences coming of age.
We also pay tribute to the iconic James Earl Jones who recently passed away at the age of 93.

To kick off this year's Geektoberfest, we talk about the original Ghost with the Most, his first film, as well as a few comments about the animated series, the musical, and (spoilers!) a small review of the sequel.
Also, we sampled both the 2 Fanta products released with the sequel film, Haunted Spritz and Haunted Apple.

One of the great comedic duos of the modern age made us laugh with racial situations, ridiculous reactions to mundanity, and other kinds of social commentary seen through the eyes of laughter.
If you haven't ever seen their sketches on the Civil War reenactment, Obama's Anger Translator, the text message misunderstanding (which we think everyone has experienced at least once!), or the beloved substitute teacher, Mr. Garvey, well, then…..YOU DONE MESSED UP, A-A-RON!!!

“Shome thingsh in here don't react well to bulletsh!”
We discuss what Brant considers a dang-near perfect film(albeit a very “guy” movie): action-packed, political, intense situations, great music, excellent acting from a scattering of gems, AND the film is only PG!
It also doesn't hurt that Sean Connery looks so cool, or “austere”, Andrew says.
Today, we got Culver's burgers to go, complete with fries, cheese curds, and Culver's own root beer on tap.

Not exactly something we geek out about, per se, but we do enjoy entertaining some of the ideas people have come up with to claim we are all being duped! From Roswell aliens and faking the moon landing, to the idea that Finland isn't real, birds aren't real, or reality isn't real, some have us scratching our heads, while others might just have an air of possibility surrounding them. We take a light-hearted look at the more popular conspiracy theories from all around the globe….. hint, hint.

Stars and planets and meteorites, oh my!
Since the beginning of time, man has looked up and felt awe and wonder at what he saw. We discuss the moon, the galaxies, constellations, and space exploration. We even discuss Pluto's status as a dwarf planet.

“Whose footprints are these?”
This week we talk about our favorite parts from one of the greatest video games of all time! The complex gameplay, the intriguing characters, the weapons, the plot, even the music…. Metal Gear may have been one of the most “secret black projects”, but Metal Gear Solid is one of the most well-known and fun games ever! (IGN #36, IMDB #5!)

The second Stephen King novella from the Different Seasons collection. We talked about the book and its subsequent film. Quite dark, extremely heavy, and definitely not “Shauna friendly”. We both agree, we're not really geeking out about this particular one. If WWII themes, murder, or David Schwimmer bother you, trigger warning!

We each grew up watching a variety of musicals, from Annie to Ziegfeld. We've even gotten to perform in a few on stage. Also, we both got caught up in the storms that were Phantom of the Opera and Les Miz. In many ways, narratives through music make the stories and even the emotions portrayed much more poignant.

With the relatable “every man” talent of Tom Hanks, perfectly blended with the quirky cuteness of Meg Ryan, the 90's gave us America's sweethearts. We talk about their four films together and how they just fit in ways that might only happen with “movie love”.

For our centennial episode, we deep dive into what it meant to us to grow up in the 80’s and 90’s, and experienced firsthand how being a geek went from being a social pariah to a mainstream protagonist of American culture and entertainment. We’ve helped geek movies be the highest grossing films of the year. We’ve helped video gaming go from a casual pastime to a religious devotion. We’ve even learned how to apply geek wisdom to our parenting techniques to raise geek children!

….and then we continue going over the top with the acclaimed sequel album. If Bat I is Steinman’s idealized teenage fantasy, with Bat II, the teen has grown up and is now dealing with the crushing effect adulting has on those dreams. Peter Pan was right; we should have stayed forever young!
