  • During the 1940's and 1950s there were a series of cases that involved children in the vicinity of Wigan, some of which remain unsolved to this day. While another perpetrated by Norman Green would be the case that became Albert Pierrepoint's final execution. Join me as I explore the solved and unsolved cases, and what led to the most recognisable executioner in British history hanging up his noose.

  • Styllou Christofi was the penultimate woman to hang in England, although she received little media interest, despite the fact that her crime was arguable more brutal, and sensational than that committed by Ruth Ellis the final woman to go to the noose, six months later. Join me as I delve into the case of Styllou Christofi, a true mother in law from hell.

in the proceeding weeks Christie would go on to commit three murders, but before they were his victims they were Rita Nelson, Kathleen Maloney and Hectorina Mclennan each had her own story which I explore in this episode.

  • At the conclusion of Timothy Evans' trial, his mother confronted John Christie, branding him a murderer to which his wife Ethel responded “Don’t you dare call my husband a murderer, he’s a good man.”
I wonder how much Ethel truly believed these words as she spoke them, whether deep down she had a gnawing suspicion that something was wrong, that just yards from her bedroom window lay the bodies of two women, and that within 3 years of Evans’ trial she too would die at her husbands hand.

  • At the time of his execution few had sympathy for Timothy Evans’ plight, after all he had been charged with the murders of his pregnant wife and 13 month old daughter. Add to this reports that he had been verbally and physically abusive to his wife throughout their marriage, on the surface he appeared to be the type of person the death penalty had been designed for, in that it removed a violent and dangerous individual who posed a threat to the public. However three years after his execution, new revelations would call into question whether he should have gone to the noose.
Join me as I delve into the story of Timothy Evans, and the murders of his wife Beryl and daughterGeraldine.

  • During what Albert Pierrepoint would refer to as the “stormiest period of my life.” a number of key trials, and an inquiry into the validity of the death penalty would impact the increaing support for its abolition.
In this episode I will explore a case that bacame known as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in English law. When 19 year old Derek Bentley was hanged for the murder of PC Sidney Miles, despite the fact that Derek had not fired the fatal shot.
