It's not quite the original Sumerian Tablets of Gilgamesh, but this is BY FAR my oldest book yet. Tonight's book was published in 1658 by Dr. Thomas Brown, titled, "Pseudodoxia Epidemica: Or Enquiries into Very many Received Tenets, and Commonly Presumed Truths," also known simply as "Pseudodoxia Epidemica" or "Vulgar Errors." It's a work challenging and refuting the "vulgar" or common errors and superstitions of Brown's age. The work was in the vanguard of work-in-progress scientific journalism during the 17th-century scientific revolution and includes evidence of his adherence to the Baconian method of empirical observation of nature. And as we'll see throughout its pages, frequent examples of Browne's subtle humor can also be found. Browne's three determinants for obtaining truth were the authority of past scholarly works, the act of reason, and empirical experience. Each of these determinants is employed upon subjects ranging from common folklore to the cosmological. Subjects covered in Pseudodoxia Epidemica are arranged in accordance to the time-honoured Renaissance scale of creation; the learned doctor essaying on the nature of error itself (Book 1), continuing with fallacies in the mineral, vegetable (Book 2), and animal (Book 3) kingdoms onto errors concerning Man (Book 4), Art (Book 5), Geography and History (Book 6), and finally Astronomy and the Cosmos (Book 7). Pseudodoxia Epidemica was a valuable source of information which found itself upon the shelves of many homes in seventeenth century England. Being in the vanguard of the scientific writing, it paved the way for much subsequent popular scientific journalism and began a decline in the belief in mythical creatures. 0:00 Unboxing 14:15 Book Reveal 23:20 Table of Contents and Ceremonial Candle Lighting 55:50 Reading ▸ Want to leave a tip or connect?: history #books #letsfindout #ASMR #relaxing #mythology #science

To birth the solar system, you must first invent the universe. - something Carl Sagan probably would've said. The creation of the solar system is a tale of cosmic evolution that spans billions of years. According to the currently accepted Nebular Hypothesis, approximately 4.6 billion years ago, a vast molecular cloud, possibly 65 light-years across and primarily composed of hydrogen, helium, and traces of heavier elements, floated in the dark depths closer to the center of our then-young Milky Way Galaxy. This enormous nebula, was the cradle of our solar system. A significant event, perhaps a nearby supernova explosion, disturbed the calm of this nebula, causing it to collapse under its own gravity. As it contracted, the nebula began to spin faster and flattened into a rotating disk. At the heart of this collapsing cloud, most of the material clumped together to form a protostar—the nascent Sun. As the protostar continued to accumulate mass, the pressure and temperature at its core increased until nuclear fusion ignited, and it began to shine as a true star. Surrounding the young Sun was a disk of gas and dust, where the remaining material started to gather into smaller clumps, gradually forming larger bodies known as planetesimals. In the hotter, inner regions of this disk, rocky planets began to take shape—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Farther out, where it was cooler, the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, along with the ice giants Uranus and Neptune, started to form. As the Sun continued to shine, it emitted powerful solar winds that swept away the leftover gas and dust, clearing the path for the nascent planets to settle into stable orbits. During this time, smaller celestial bodies like moons, asteroids, and comets also formed, many of them remnants of the early planetesimals. Over millions of years, the solar system gradually stabilized. The planets established relatively steady orbits around the Sun, which had reached a stable phase in its life cycle. This long process, spanning tens of millions of years, culminated in the beautifully ordered solar system we observe today, a testament to the dynamic yet orderly forces of cosmic evolution. ▸ Music generously provided by: (Please go support their beautiful music) desert sand feels warm at night https://youtu.be/dxO-DeAEZDM?si=dnRgBqoYfKwitxgc Zerofuturism https://youtu.be/mPYBnlMafS0?si=m1qgtll8orHlvvFj ONHVN ▸ Image/Animation Credits: National Aeronautic and Space Agency NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL, European Space Agency ESA, Goddard Space Flight Center GSFC, John Hopkin's Applied Ohysics Laboratory APL, National Science Foundation NSF Michael Y. Tonight is a look across the Universe. We begin with the first ever gravitational lensed galaxy found in the 1980's in the galaxy cluster, Abell 370 to another Hubble Deep Field and the size and characteristics of the Universe at the largest scales. Then we go down to the subatomic and see how light interacts with matter and how all electrons are possibly just one single electron moving back and forth through time and space. (that one is seriously fascinating). Last we discuss the possibility of life in the universe using the parameters outlined by the Drake equation. This uses probabilities about stars, exoplanets, life, civilizations, and their technologies to estimate how many other intelligent living and extinct civilizations there might be in the Milky Way Galaxy. In 1983, two Japanese scientists, Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, pioneers in the field of radioastronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), got inebriated as they celebrated the Tanabata star festival. They decided to use a radio telescope at Stanford to send a message to one of the brightest stars in the sky, Altair. In the message was information about our planet, our evolution, the human species, and even a high-spirited sign-off, sending both the English word "TOAST" and the Japanese equivalent, "KANPAI" (乾杯). And I love the playful sentiment. 40 years later, their scientific progeny are listening for a response. Spoiler alert. We haven't heard back... yet. But we also explore the nature of these and other messages to possible intelligent alien life out there listening like we are. We touch upon SETI, the Arecibo message, and a few other attempts at establishing a first contact with an extraterrestrial alien species. Tonight we explore the strange reality of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and what it means for 3 dimensional beings born into a 4 dimensional Universe. It predicts our birth from a singularity in an expanding Universe, the contraction of space at the speed of light, and both black holes and the infinite time dilation at their horizon. It's bizarre that space truly compresses and time actually slows down deep inside gravitational wells and near the speed of light. We literally observe supernovae billions of light years away exploding at half their normal speed. So let's find out about the history and basics of relativity. ▸ Want to leave a tip or connect?: Video credits: Carrol and Ostlie (textbook I used): https://amzn.to/3QtiABm TNG Simulations https://www.tng-project.org/media/ NASA/STSci/ESA Davis and Lineweaver (2003) https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0310808 Nolan, C. (These podcasts are the audio from my Youtube channel videos found here: ) Tonight we're browsing a really cool retro 1969 LIFE magazine I found at a local flea-market thrift store. It's main article is about the LEM (Lunar Module) which was the tiny spacecraft that detached from the Apollo Command Module in lunar orbit and sent Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descending onto the lunar surface to be the first ever humans to step foot on another world. We also browse the rest of the issue and look at some of the more interesting ads of the late 1960's. Lot's of unique and memorable marketing of clothing, appliances, insurance, and of course, booze and cigarettes. Additional context: This issue was from March 1969, and that Apollo 11 mission didn't happen until July of 1969, so it's fascinating to travel back in time and think about the anticipation of the event just 3 months later. These podcasts are just the audio from my Youtube videos. If you'd like to see visuals too, visit my channel, Let's Find Out: This is an exploration of the greatest discoveries in cosmology, the great scientists and astronomers behind them, and the still unresolved mysteries of the Universe at the most extreme scales of time, gravity, and distance across the deepest space. This is part of a larger script I wrote for the James Webb Space Telescope: The Big Bang, Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Cosmic Web Filaments, the End of Greatness, Inflation, Dark Energy, and there's still so many questions about the nature of our Universe. Tonight we learn what the current lambda cold dark matter big bang model of the universe says happened from the first few seconds to the first few million years after the universe was thought have come into existence. We learn what older cosmological theories evolved into and how our conception of light, matter and energy has changed over that last few centuries as our understanding of them has deepened. We learn what the biggest mysteries of physics and cosmology still are and about the huge gaps in our understanding of the cosmic dark ages, the dark matter halos around nearly all galaxies, and how the still-mysterious phenomena of the big bang, inflation, and dark energy is propelling galaxies apart. The book "Happy Clouds, Happy Trees: The Bob Ross Phenomenon" opened my eyes to just how many things are connected in culture, society, history, psychology, art, and life. Let's find out where Bob fits into all this. Bob Ross Deep Dive series: Part 1: His Legacy Part 2: His Biography Part 3A: The Philosophy of Bob Ross: Ancient History and Modern Leisure (this video) Part 3B: The Philosophy of Bob Ross: Industrial to Digital Revolution Please consider buying this book if you enjoyed this video. I relied on many parts of it to illuminate Bob's impact on and continued connection to the world. Thanks so much for watching, commenting, and continually showing support for these little passion projects of mine, everyone. It means a lot and encourages me to try harder to discover more and explain more about life and what I wish I had known at a younger age.
