  • One of the fears that people have (and I definitely had it myself) is that if they cut sugar from their diet, then there's nothing left to eat.

I mean, sugar is everywhere. Right?

    Well, not quite.

Sugar - added sugar I mean - is nowhere to be found in whole foods: in fruits and vegetables, for example.

But it is a very common additive in industrial highly processed foods, or "ultra processed foods" as they're known.

And many studies have shown that there's a link between chronic inflammation and a high consumption of prepackaged foods like pizzas, frozen dinners, sauces and condiments, and obvious sources of sugar like sodas, cookies and pastries.

So less sugar means less chronic inflammation, and a lower risk of conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, digestive issues, and fatty liver disease.

So... can you imagine how you would feel with less sugar and less inflammation?
Listen to this episode to hear about the benefits of cutting sugar!

As a child, Sarah didn't have any exposure to sugar whatsoever.

And because there was no option for sugar in her life, Sarah says that she was neutral around food.

Until her late thirties, when she decided to do a popular elimination diet. She had no weight to lose at the time, but she wanted to see what the hype was about.

So she went on a 30-day elimination diet where she cut out categories of foods, like legumes and dairy and grains and certain fruits, certain starchy vegetables... and of course, sugar. Later, she also cut alcohol.

But that 30 day elimination diet put Sarah in a calorie restricted state. And for the first time in her life, she felt totally out of control around food.

Listen to how cutting sugar and alcohol forced Sarah to learn to deal with her emotional pain and physical pain in healthier ways.

And how she developed healthier coping skills than sugar or food.

  • Acquanda grew up eating what she calls "semi-healthy foods", like flavoured yogurts.

Then when she moved close to her sister, who's a great cook and dessert maker, Acquanda started eating sweets more often... and craving them!

That's when she realized that she had a problem with sugar. She felt powerless.

Acquanda was doing research on African American women in the southern states who are breastfeeding. That's when she noticed that packaged and fast foods were everywhere. The food options at the grocery store were limited, and this affected health outcomes.

She calls this unequal access to whole foods "food apartheid".

In this episode, Acquanda tells what she did to get her personal power back over sugar... and how YOU can too!

  • Whole foods... processed foods... and ultra-processed foods (UPFs)... What's the difference?

I'm not the first to ask this question.

In fact, the NOVA system assigns foods to one of four groups, based on how much processing they have been through:

Group 1 - Unprocessed or minimally processed foods

Group 2 - Processed culinary ingredients

    Group 3 - Processed foods

Group 4 - Ultra-processed food and drink products

In this episode, you'll get examples of foods from each group.

Unsurprisingly, I also talk about one food in particular: sugar.

You'll also hear about my take on the NOVA classification system as a whole (no pun intended!).

And finally, I'll give you my definition of "food", and where you can learn more about which foods work for YOU.

  • Ellen was a food addict from the age of about 7, she says, with a history of obesity. Doctors and dietitians had put her on many diets as she was growing up, to the point of her doctor suggesting bariatric surgery.

She spent a lot of time alone in her bedroom eating ultra processed foods like crisps and chocolate, with the radio on so that nobody would know. And thinking about how to end it all because she was just so miserable.

Then when Ellen was 26, she read Dr. Atkins' book, and so started her low carb/keto journey. She I lost 11 stone (154lbs) in 2 years, and has maintained that weight loss for about 13 years.

She stopped eating anything with sugar and flour in it, and refined carbohydrates as well. Her foods included meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, and at the time fruit as well.

Ellen explains how moderation doesn't compute for her. Even now, after all these years, she still can't moderate certain foods.

Over time, Ellen realized that every time she reintroduces carbohydrates, the weight starts to creep back on. So it's easier if she just doesn't eat them. And she says she doesn't miss them. She feels quite satiated with her proteins, fats, and vegetables.

Listen to Ellen tell about how she no longer feels addicted to sugar and ultra processed food, and how she got to this wonderful sense of freedom and peace around food.

    Find Ellen here.

  • Judi came from a home with a lot of trauma.

Growing up, there was always sugar around. Her mother baked a lot, and that was Judi's go-to whenever she felt any kind of emotional need.

As she started to grow older, she felt like she didn't belong. She just didn't fit in. She felt so different - like an outcast, not connected with people and not connected with herself, but she didn't know why.

As an adult, severe depression took over to the point where Judi had thoughts like: Why am I on this Earth? Why is my life like this? What have I done to deserve all this?

But she pretended that everything was OK. She made it look good on the outside.

She was a people pleaser, a caretaker, a workaholic, she says. In her work, Judi would always rise to the top because she was an overachiever.

Judi developed several addictions, but sugar was the hardest to let go of.

Listen to how Judi went from not being able to sleep, depression, self hate, and feeling desperate... to healing her trauma, and feeling free from the hold that sugar had on her.

  • When Lisa was around 20 years old, she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

One of the main side effects was weight gain.
And that set her down a path of obsession with food and exercise because she didn't want to gain weight.

Previous to that, she had digestive issues. So to try to find a solution, Lisa did everything to the extreme. For example, massive elimination diets. She cut all starchy, carby, and sugary foods.

But it was exhausting for her, and she felt restricted... which led to cravings and bingeing.

In her quest to find a sustainable solution to help with her digestion, keep her weight stable, stabilize her blood sugar, and get rid of her cravings, Lisa discovered intermittent fasting.

Once she started fasting, Lisa realized that sugar was the one thing that made her feel like once she had it, she wanted more of it. She was able to moderate everything else... but not sugar.

Listen to how Lisa finally let go of sugar - and alcohol - and how easy and freeing her intermittent fasting lifestyle is today!

  • Dana stopped sugar - more specifically, white sugar and flour - in December of 2021.

In this episode, Dana tells how she was very addicted to sugar for 40 some years. Today, she recognizes that for her, it's better not to have any than to try to have a little.

It was when she was in the hospital in 2021 after an accident that Dana remembered that her grandmother had lost both her legs to diabetes. Dana herself had been diabetic since she was 40 and still didn't give up the sugar.

In fact, she even had a heart attack and bypass surgery when she was 50, and that still didn't help her give up sugar.

But then she thought: What if I've screwed up my life with this sugar? What if my leg doesn't heal?

In this episode, you'll hear how Dana finally became sugar free and reversed her diabetes. For Dana, being sugar free means that she tries not to eat any processed food.

She lost 85lbs when she cut sugar and flour. She also discovered intermittent fasting. Plus she walks every day.

And most of all, she feels good. In fact, Dana says that she didn't know what feeling good felt like.

She says she can live her life more honestly now because she's not hiding anything.
