In this episode, we continue on our four pillars of marksmanship series and focus in on follow through. Follow through is not an action, but an intentional inaction. Want to take your shooting to the next level? Follow through is usually the last missing key. We also discuss BDC turrets and why we don't use or even recommend them along with some updates on the 22 Creedmoor.

In this episode we continue on our 4 part series for laying the foundation to the fundamentals of marksmanship! Part 2: Preparing to take the shot! We are now on target and getting ready to shoot. How we prepare is more important than the act of pulling the trigger. Your results can be predicted, whether they are good or bad, by your attention and preparation. There are many reasons why people undertake or pursue learning how to build and maintain their very own rifles. And it's not always just about the money or cost savings. The two other reasons are expediency and quality. And until now you you could only have two of the the three choice.
Cheap, Fast GoodIf you want it fast and good, it's not going to be cheap.
If you want cheap and fast, it's usually not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's probably not going to be fast.
The future is about to change and our hopes is very shortly being able to provide out shooters and customers with all three. Get ready, the ACE is about to change everything.

The ACE in action, but not mentioned. This podcast is a mix of business, industry, the ACE and changes. We are proud of Derick and the work he has done. Derick was the first to ever hit the Cold Bore Shot Challenge and won the day at the Black Jack Challenge. Great job on both! Sadly, the ACE and Wolf Precision were edited from mention. That said, great job and both are great channels to watch.
In this podcast we are also excited to have our new online store open and our 2025 shooting school dates open for registration. Also, be on the look out for 5 new rifle starter kits being posted Friday. We think you will be both surprised and impressed.

This is as much a business podcast as it is a shooting podcast. Our industry has so many secrets and back door dealings hidden from the public that at first glance seem, to most, harmless. But make no mistake, it is a back door that will eventually close many businesses in the firearms industry. I really recommend doing research when dealing with or looking for products from these industries and reward those who support our industry with your business. And, be sure to tell them the reason you choose them! Thank you for supporting our shooting and manufacturing industry.
Look for our 2025 Long Range Shooting School dates being posted and open for registration August 30, 2024.

When talking about the magnums and 30 caliber hunting rifles, most accept the recoil delivered out of the box. Some think I am "anti-magnum" for this reason. I am not and really want to spread the word that if you are recoil sensitive or a younger shooter, you do not have to be anti-magnum either. There are many tricks to dropping the recoil and the big 30 calibers have huge range you can play with when it comes to manipulating these factors. The 300 PRC can be brought into line with the recoil of a .308 Win or maybe even less in some cases . It just takes some thinking and some tinkering. You do not have to be stuck with the punishment your rifle delivered out of the box. In this episode, I want to share with you some ways you can really tame it down and get into a comfortable range that almost anyone can shoot.

We are diving into the 7mm calibers. Any chance you can get them to recoil in the enjoyable range of 0-10 Foot pounds of energy on the shooter? You bet, and we will explain how along with some other reasons why this so is important besides just recoil reduction. A really important and ofter overlooked tool is setting up your rifle to be able to self spot.
We also answer a listeners question on properly adjusting your length of pull on your rifle. There are some challenges in getting this right and important things most people overlook, especially new shooters. We share our approach while here at the in person shooting schools.

Moving on to the 6.5 calibers in Magnums. This is where I think the divide starts with newer shooters starting to have either negative reactions to the shot or at least reducing the fun. That said, there are ways to make the bigger 6.5's more than capable of killing altmost any big game animal in the world without killing the sender in the process. We want to share some our experiences with you.
Having shot a .264WM for years and have taken Elk with it. I can share with you all my positive experiences with these calibers and tell you with confidence that I enjoyed every minute with that rifle. Including taking it long range varmint hunting and even placing 3rd in the North East Regional Varmint Hunters Association’s Championship Shoot. Not bad for magnum rifle that weighed just 12 pounds.

The 6.5 short action calibers...this is where most of the separation starts when it comes to the line in the sand for big game. In the US, it is considered unethical by some. In Europe, it is the number one moose caliber used. What is the difference? We will let you be the judge as we make the case as to why this is such a great caliber for new, young, or recoil sensitive shooters.
It's about shot placement and the shooter's ability to reliably and repeatably put the bullet on the mark every time. That is through minimal recoil and maximum training. Then, it's about speed and bullet design and construction.

In this episode we dive into the 6mm calibers. Often thought of the next big step when growing a young or new shooter. This caliber is very capable for medium to big game given the right distance and bullet combo. Again, our focus is improving the accuracy of the shooter and the enjoyment of their experience with the rifle.
Big news, we want to give something nice away for all those attending our Online Long Range Shooting School. I thought this was a great interview with Derick. It was not planned and not recorded to be one, but in the end Derick ask if he could post it. Of course, I said yes. Derick attended our shooting school in March of 2024 and purchased a custom rifle featuring the ACE from us last year. He is not only a great guy, but a Veteran and former Drill Sergeant. Both of which I have a lot of respect for.
Derick was leaving on an invite to the Black Jack Challenge held by YouTuber Erik Cortina. He wanted to ask some last minute questions before leaving not just some advice but more in depth questions on our patented and accurizing ACE System. I reposted his interview here because you get to hear the story of the ACE. I also want to support Derick and his efforts to grow as a shooter and his channel.
Lastly, he got the cold bore shot and won Eric Cortina's Black Jack Challenge with skill and of course a rifle featuring the ACE System. Thanks goes out to Derick and congrats on some great shooting!

So let's talk numbers. Although I am going to share with you my opinions on all the different calibers going forward, the numbers never lie. In this episode I want to share with you a recoil calculator that I find to be an invaluable tool while trying to build a rifle, select your caliber or even when selecting a bullet. This tool gives you a chance to change just a couple little things and see the results you will get in both recoil energy and recoil velocity. And recoil velocity is never spoken off and can make one of the biggest differences in taking your rifles "felt" recoil down a notch or two so you can enjoy shooting it more. Next episode is going to be on the big .224 calibers, but for now let's give you some tools to run the numbers on your own.

Setting the rules of the road. So, we are going to advocate going with the smallest caliber you think you can get by with. But how do you compare them? What are the parameters or measurements you would use to quantify or qualify the results to get an accurate comparison? This is how I am going to approach this and come up with a score. This is all with a baseline of comparison shooting a small .224 caliber like the .223 Rem, 222 Rem or 22 Hornet.
Recoil Tolerance Score of 0-100: How many people out of 100 can shoot 100 rounds through said rifle and enjoy each shot and would come back and come back to do another 100 rounds immediately afterwards like they could with a small .224 caliber?
Group Size Deterioration Score 0-100: How many people out of 100 could shoot said caliber without increasing their average group size by more than 50% when compared to what they could shoot with a .224 caliber?
Fundamental Deterioration Threshold 0-100: How many consecutive shots do I think the average person could shoot before fundamentals start to deteriorate? I feel 99% of the shooting population could shoot up to 100 rounds with a small .224 caliber.
Accuracy Deterioration Score 0-100: How many people out of 100 could maintain the same level of accuracy with this bigger caliber that they could achieve with a small .224 caliber?

Let's start small. At least as small as you can legally shoot for hunting in most states. We are going to kick this series off with the small .224 calibers you can choose from. The 22 Hornet, 222 Rem and the .223 Rem. This is not a list of ideas. This is a list of killing-capable calibers for deer- sized game and below. I know this from experience as my Grandfather and my family has hunted with the first two calibers for decades. Taking more deer than you could fit in a dump truck and as best I can recall, I never remember him ever asking for help finding one that got away. That in itself should speak volumes on the value of these unspoken and often forgotten calibers that have been around for nearly 95 years. Take a listen with an open mind. It might change your shooting and open your world to the idea of going with the smallest caliber you can get by with.
