#306 - Wherever there's a race, there are those few who try to get around the rules, try to earn things without working for them and show everyone how they are seemingly "the best". But are they? This week, it's all about race cheaters. What types of cheaters are there? I give examples of one-time cheaters, as well as serial cheaters. And the bigger question: Why do cheaters cheat? What type of runner is most likely to cheat?
Please note this is Part 1 of 2 parts. The second part will be exclusively on Doping, which is a whole other type of cheating and deserves an entire episode.
And a correction: In my talking about the 2018 SF Hot Chocolate Race, I described the corals as being separated by miles per hour when I should have said separated by mile per minutes. My apologies.

#305 - In 2021, the ultramarathon community experienced its worst disaster in history. In the Chinese province of Gansu a terrible and preventable nightmare occurred. I will go over all the details; what led up to it, why it happened and how it could have been prevented. I will also help you from becoming a victim of a similar disaster.
Also, I review the running book - The Frontrunner, written by last week's guest Brad Fawley.Support the show

#304 - The Frontrunner is that rare book: a novel about running. It's more than that though. It's a story of understanding who one truly is through running. And it's really good. Author Brad Fawley joins me this week to talk about his book, his own runner (like his book, he's really good!), and all the other things he does or has done. If you're looking for motivation or even for a great next book to read, you've come to the right place! All the links are on the show website!

#303 - During my Ruth Anderson 50k race a few weeks ago, I realized that some food choice changes needed to be made. I've done a lot of thinking about how my food habits effect my running and races. They go hand in hand. This week, I talk about how my nutritional healthy choices will make a positive effect on my running and hopefully put an end to my past GI problems. Figuring out and perfecting our nutrition is difficult, I really hope this helps end my past problems and I hope that sharing them with you will help you on your own running journey!

#302 - It's the time of year for Haunting Running Trails! It's that time of year to listen to some spooky stories about ghosts, apparitions and unearthly creatures somewhere in the world. This year, I'm focusing on my home city, San Francisco! There's a lot to cover! I hope you enjoy hearing some of the history of my historic yet wild hometown! So, go for a run, or sit back in a comfy chair and hear some haunting stories!
A correction: I called the San Francisco National Cemetery by the wrong name the first time I mentioned it. My apologies.Support the show

#301 - Since 1976, the Marine Corps Marathon or MCM has been pounding the streets of Washington DC and Arlington, Virginia in late October to celebrate not only the US Marine Corps, but enjoying our terrific sport in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. This week, I talk about the race's history, some race facts and some things you may want to be prepared for if you decide to run it yourself.
Also, I go into my training from the past week a little bit. I will talk a bit about my training each week as I get back into running a little more each week.Support the show

#300 - Wow!!! What a terrific weekend! I finished my first 50k in over four years this past weekend and I'm still on Cloud Nine! What a fantastic race run by amazing people! I could not have ask for a better race as my returning ultra race. This week, I talk all about the race and what it meant to be. I also talk about why you should run it!
It feels good to get back into ultra races and to look forward to many more!Support the show

#299 - When I think of really long ultra races, a few runners' names come to mind. When I think of those long races and the runners who film them, there are only a handful who have the prowess to handle running a complicated single track and filming at the same time! Wes Plate is one of those runners. It's taken him a while to make those videos we look forward to and I for one am so happy he does! Today, he talks about his journey, his process and more about his love of the very long run!

#298 - If you ran in high school or college and didn't run on a track, you probably ran cross country. But what happened when you left school? Did you continue running cross country? In the US, probably not. If you grew up in Africa, chances are the answer would be yes. Cross country is a huge sport in other countries, but why isn't it a bigger sport here? It's exciting, has all the ups and downs of trail running, yet is still short enough for spectators. Today, I talk about its beginnings and why it should be brought back to the Olympics, this time, to the Winter Olympics!
But wait, there's MORE! Do not miss my thoughts on the Camille Herron controversy. You may or may not agree with me, but I share some thoughts that needed to be said. You can always let me know what you think!

#297 - Through our running careers (even us amateurs), we can go through many phases and changes. Life alterations, accidents, illnesses, career decisions, all sorts of choices we make can affect our running. It can affect what we want in running as well. The desires we dreamed of when we were young may not be the same as we age, as I've found out.
This is one of a few topics I talk about this week. Another is a couple gripes I have about certain running books. I'm wondering if you think the same.
And, on a lighter note, I mention some of my favorite songs I like when I run. To share your favorite running song, email me at: [email protected]

#296 - A couple years ago I released an episode on this topic, but I thought it was time to share some more on the same topic. Picture yourself out with a few of your non-running friends; all of these running "issues" are things you probably wouldn't want to bring up with them. Save them for your running pals! So, let's have fun and think about stuff you really don't want to talk about!

#295 - Technology is bounding towards the future faster than we know. The satellite service known as Starlink may be an incredible resource for ultraraces who have the capabilities to use it. Perhaps some already do. This week, I talk about what Starlink is, how it got started and how it can help create live race coverage for ultraraces that they never had before! I'll also talk about one race that was way ahead of the curve!

#294 - If you search back in running history Robert Earl Johnson and Wilma Rudolph will be two of the first names that you will see. Both are pioneers in running history, having achieved firsts in races and track meets, including the Olympics, that had not been seen before. Johnson was the first Black American to compete in Olympic distance running and Rudolph was the first American woman to win three Gold Medals in one Olympic games. But they were both so much more. And that is what this week's episode is about. So, join me as I honor this two magnificent runners and heroes!

#293 - This week, I talk about my short but wonderful trip to Lake Tahoe and Echo Lake and how important it is to get away to the place where that recharges your batteries. The Sierra Nevada Mountains does that for me like no place else. I know there's a place that you like to go to when you feel the need to re-energize. No matter how brief, it is better to go for a short stay than no stay. I also talk about my terrific training run and I finally figured out why I fell on that fateful day last December. It was a big week of discoveries for me and I'm so grateful to be able to share it with you!

#292 - A lot of components go into successful running. One of the most important is proper breathing. It may seem such a simple thing; we breathe air in and out. But is it just that easy? As is usually the case, there are a few more important keys to understand to help you on your journey to being a better runner. I'm right there with you! As I talk about each subject, I'm learning with you. Efficient breathing is something that can always be practiced. Even the most experienced runners can still work on their breathing skills. I hope this episode helps you on your running adventures!

This week's episode is all about the running races of the Paris Olympics. I talk about my favorites and maybe a let down or two. What were your favorites?

#290 - You might have heard of fastpacking before. It's the lighter, speedier little brother of backpacking. It's a thrilling way to see much more of the back country than a day trail run! This week, I explain what it is in detail and why it might be of interest to you. It's an excited way to get your trail running and camping all in one! Join me as we take a deep dive into another way to see the Great Outdoors!

#289 - Experienced CDT thru hikers tell those who wish to hike this longest of the Triple Crown American trails to "embrace the brutality". It's the longest and the hardest of the three. This week, I talk about the trail, including the history, what makes it so tough, the few FKTs and why it is of interest to runners! We are so blessed to have these incredible trails and even if it's just for an afternoon hike, make a section of the CDT be on your bucket list!
Also, don't miss my adventure at Mt Tamalpais this past weekend! It was quite an experience. And this time, it didn't involve the ER, thankfully!Support the show

#288 - Jenna Burris is a licensed professional counselor and trail runner. She's found a way to combine her love of nature with her love of helping people and invented the term Trail Therapist. Though she didn't start Eco Therapy, she is a part of this new field in therapy and it's refreshing to hear about a new way to help patients. She shares this and more in this week's episode. Therapy is very much needed in our world and it's nice to know that someone is offering an alternative to a stuffy office!

#287 - With the creation of the Internationalist running shoe in 1980, Nike created a road running shoe that helped spark the tsunami of running that even today hasn't stopped. But by the mid-1980s, Nike realized that there was a lot more money to be made outside of running; lots and lots more money. They abandoned running for the greener pastures of trendy fashion. That was the corporation's first step away from running for Nike.
Throughout the years, Nike has had several missteps, some perhaps not deliberate, but many, could have been handled in better, more appropriate ways. In this week's episode, I talk about Nike's downfall as it relates only to running. Of course, they have had other problems not-running related. I'll leave that for other shows.
Much of the information I talk about comes from Kara Goucher's book "The Longest Race". There is a link on the show website if you would like to purchase a copy.
