Paul Verhoeven, author of Loose Units is back with a second book about his father John’s time in NSW police and it’s another fantastic, action-packed and funny read. There’s a deeper, darker side this time too, as the Verhoeven’s confront the brutal bullying Paul suffered during his childhood and the decisions his parents made around dealing with it.
This is an intriguing conversation about father son dynamics.
Thanks to Paul Verhoeven & John Verhoeven, and Professor Stephen Cordner.
If you or someone you know is being bullied, contact The Bully Project.
Listen to my other interview with Paul and John on Australian True Crime here.

This week on Welcome To Hell, we’re sharing part 2 of our chat with comedian, actress and writer Rachel Berger. We talk about the role of women as nurturers, how Rachel's parent's survival story helped her through isolation, and buddhism.
This is the last episode of Welcome To Hell. Thank you for listening and joining Nelly and Meshel every week in isolation.
Tune in again soon for season five of Meshel Laurie's Nitty Gritty Committee as we return to telling stories of the guts and glory of life.

This week on Welcome To Hell, Meshel and Nelly are joined by comedian, actress and writer Rachel Berger. This is part one of our chat, because there was just too much to fit into one episode!
We chat about what it’s like to be a female comedian, why Meshel wants to be like her father and how Rachel’s career success in the early days was a result of sacrifice.

Nelly remembered another friend of ours who’s very useful. Fahey Younger who used to be a famously weird comedian in a duo called Miss Itchy, now she’s a secretly weird real estate advocate. She has lots a words of comfort and good advice for renters and mortgage payers alike. So many kinds of Hell.

We’re back in homeschooling hell at our place, so I’m sharing my office with my two kids, which might be why Nelly Thomas brought us a real live psychiatrist!
He’s not even just a psychiatrist, he is many, many things. His name is Steve Ellen, but we can call him Professor Steve Ellen if we want to. You might’ve seen him on TV or heard him on the radio or bought his excellent book called Mental, which he wrote with comedian Catherine Deveney.

The Scummy Mummies are comedy duo Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn. They’re based in London, but Helen’s quite Australian, and she joined Nelly and I to tell us how her lockdown’s going, given that she’s been at it about a month longer than us.
She’s also got an extra degree of difficulty, in the form of a little relationship fracas that happened at the worst possible moment.
Nelly and I will be having Friday night drinks from 6pm live on youtube, again this week, on the Australian True crime podcast channel, and this week we’ll be joined by a registered psychiatrist. That was Nelly’s idea.
Is it an intervention?
Don’t know, you’ll have to join us to see.
