Those who have a keen interest in beauty may want to explore a career in beauty brand marketing. Gabbie tells us how she brought in K-Beauty brands, sharing both the glam and un-glam sides of beauty marketing. The only way to outlive your competitors is don't give up! As much as we love K-Beauty now, it wasn't an easy sell the first time they brought brands here.

Copycats, low willingness to pay, limitations in production, color stories from the 80s. What is to blame for the dismal state of local beauty? This is an emergency SOBA (State of the Beauty Address) with one of our favorite local beauty branding minds, Sam Gonzales; Brand Manager of Fresh Formula.

How do you make a queen? While a lot of technical thought goes into correcting droopy eyes, or chiseling baby faces, Jim Ryan Ros credits good listening to his queen-making capabilities. Any woman can be glammed up based on what the books say, but you must be willing to edit that to the personality of the woman sitting in your chair. Once you give them a look that is uniquely theirs, they will be able to walk out and conquer that stage.

A very detailed conversation on how Asians are not all yellow and should not all be stuck to warm tone makeup.
Bernice also goes into detail about how placement matters, since the tips we Asians get online are often for completely different bone structures. I love it when she said "stop pandering to Caucasian beauty norms." It is the very essence of Mindful Makeup!

Episode 9 brings us JL Crespo (@xjlcrespo) a young fashion stylist who has done tons of ads, fashion shows, and celebrity events. We sit down and ask him for tips on designing your own style, but JL has a more interesting take: your "flaws" are not flaws and often, the features we are most self-conscious of look great being shown off! Believing that fashion is personal, JL encourages people to try all the styles, even those you are afraid of. Only then will you figure out what looks best on you,
In this episode, we talk about the details you need to consider to find your most flattering outfits, amazing thrifting locations, your number one tip for the best fit, and some ideas for those working from home.
JL also does beauty and skincare, follow him at @guy.skin.

Beautiful makeup is not satisfying if you don't capture it successfully. Ryan Ong (@rynong) is an events and sports photographer, who is also a Sony Philippines Brand Ambassador.
Event photography is so interesting for me, because you rarely have the chance to set up lighting, background, props, or even posing models the way you want them to. Today, Ryan teaches us some valuable tips in chasing the light (chase good light, not harsh light;) composing the subject, foreground, and background; anticipating the moment to be able to shoot in the moment; and finding your angles. Since he only works with ambient and available light, he has some AMAZING tips about making unflattering lighting work. We even talked about making ring lights work, which, in my experience as a beauty content creator, has been giving me that overly harsh look!

Today, Tellie talks to a makeup artist (MUA) that has taken dozens upon dozens of webinars both paid and free. With her vast repertoire of artistic, sanitation, and business-oriented seminars, we go through a quick pros and cons list of several webinars currently available online. We also ask about her top three recommendations: World Health Organization (WHO), Sanitation Conversation, and Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA PH)- and why each working MUA should take these courses.
As we gain time due to quarantine protocols, Mila encourages makeup artists to keep educated and updated, so as to be better prepared when work finally does resume. Beyond artistry, MUAs have a responsibility to be sanitary.

Episode 4 with Dr Mike (@dmdskinsciences) was a bit lacking: we only talked broadly about Pinay-friendly actives but left Azelaic Acid on a cliff-hanger. Today, we go more in-depth about Azelaic: how new is it really? What are the pros and cons? Does it really deserve the title 'wonder drug'? An amazing active that suits many skin conditions: from dry, to oily, to sensitive. Dr Mike also explains its unique sebum regulating, and melanin-attacking functions.
Retinoids are a class of vitamin A-based drugs that are considered the gold standard in dermatology. Every derma seems to use it. Dr Mike explains why you're better of with it than without it, whether you are often exposed to the sun or suffering minor sensitivities to it.
*This discussion is based on general information. Please consult your dermatologist before using actives.*

Is Physics that far of a reach when it comes to beauty? In this episode, we talk to Nico Moreno (@nixxiaolong410), a Physicist with experience in Material Science. He actually doesn't know too much about makeup, but everyday Physics can be applied in makeup packaging, to better understand how to preserve the quality of our makeup, and keep it from breaking.
From him we learn:
Pros and cons of sealed vs opened, cardboard vs plastic palettes Contaminants that can degrade the quality and integrity of your makeup, and how dry boxes are a great storage option to protect from such. Round vs rectangular vs square pans: does it matter? Mascara brushes are actually engineered to maximize the user experience! We go through several shapes: S-shaped wand, curved wand, peanut wand, and straight wand. The material also matters. As Nico emphasizes: freshness and protection from contaminants (air and oil) are of utmost importance! Time your purchases and decant only what you need. Strategize your kit and be Mindful about what you have. Like all consumables, makeup is best enjoyed while consumed fresh. Finally, Nico leaves great advice: question everything! You might not notice it, but it's these little details that can help you have a more joyful makeup journey! Thanks to everyone who watched live and pitched in their comments and experiences!

This week, Tellie Talks to Stacie Chan (@stacienoellechan), a certified K-addict with dibs on Hangeul; Korean makeup and skincare; K-Pop and idols; K-dramas, and even Korean food. With her background as a Physical Therapist PLUS her complete immersion in Korean culture, Stacie is one of the quickest #MindfulMakeup online workshop graduates because of her ready framework in understanding the unique features of her skull and the established K-Beauty techniques that tend to flatter it.
In the same vein, we talk about K-drama stereotypes (the good girl lead and the rich b*tch contra vida):
Good character design is universal. The sympathetic good girl lead status is emphasized from hair to clothes, to bags, to shoes. Ignoring baseline facial features, you can make adjustments to evoke certain personas through eyebrow shape, eyeliner style, foundation finish, lipstick style and colors, and more. HD tip: "natural" contouringCheck out more of her in her Youtube channel, Stacie Chan.

This week, Tellie talks to Sam Gonzales (@famamfa), a super talented brand strategist with experience as a graphic designer, photographer, and brand manager. I love breaking down elements of style with her because she has the language to objectively communicate what is intuitively beautiful and why.
With Sam, we talk about:
The difference between hobbies and professions, and how it's not necessarily fair to critique work that is done for fun. When it's done professionally, as in for a fee or for your lifetime 'profession' though.... What design principles apply in makeup, and how you can use them. Emphasis doesn't merely apply to typeface. Where to get artistic inspiration from (tip: painters shouldn't focus on paintings, and makeup artists shouldn't focus on makeup looks.)You should visit her website at famamfa.com

For our first episode of Mindful Makeup, Tellie talks to Den Bengzon (@kobecow), a former beauty editor who took up social sciences, but fell into doing what she loves anyway. Beauty writing, obviously. In this episode, we talk about:
Falling out of love when love becomes work - As we see in The Devil Wears Prada, the beauty editor life is not that glamorous. It's fun to imagine being an editor for a day, but the rigid demands of work for something you want to enjoy freely can be quite toxic. PR etiquette - How should you treat gifts from brands? Setting disclosure policies is a good start, so that a writer can properly convey biases (and surprisingly, objectivity) when speaking to their audience. Your value as a content creator - It's easy to feel small when making a space for yourself among brands and beauty communities. Appreciate your own time and effort, and learn to assert your worth.--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beautybytellie/message -
