Athletes are one of the most at-risk populations for developing a gambling addiction due to a combination of psychological, cultural, and situational factors. The competitive mindset that drives athletic performance can easily transfer into gambling behaviors—chasing losses, believing in “winning streaks,” and viewing risk-taking as part of the game. Many athletes also face high levels of stress, irregular schedules, and periods of boredom or isolation, especially during injury or off-season, making gambling an appealing escape or thrill. In some locker rooms, gambling is normalized as a bonding activity, blurring the lines between fun and addiction. And with increased exposure to betting sponsorships and the ease of mobile gambling, the risk is higher than ever.

There is a well-documented correlation between ADHD and gambling addiction, with individuals diagnosed with ADHD being significantly more likely to develop problem gambling behaviors. The impulsivity, difficulty with delayed gratification, and need for stimulation that characterize ADHD can make the fast-paced, high-reward nature of gambling especially appealing. Studies have shown that people with ADHD may be more prone to chasing losses, taking bigger risks, and struggling to stop even when gambling becomes harmful. Additionally, many with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD turn to gambling as a form of escape or self-medication—seeking relief from boredom, restlessness, or emotional distress. This makes early intervention and proper ADHD treatment a critical piece in preventing or addressing gambling addiction.

About Megan: Megan Poliquin, LPCC-S, LICDC-GAMB, is the Manager of Gambling Treatment and Prevention Programs at the Zepf Center in Toledo, Ohio. For the past 7 years, she has been dedicated to providing therapy to individuals with gambling disorders, many of whom are also navigating recovery from other substance use or mental health challenges. In addition to providing therapy, she actively participates in outreach and prevention efforts to raise awareness about problem gambling in her community. Recently, she has been busy connecting with college students through problem gambling outreach and brief screenings, engaging with them both on campus and at sporting events.

  • In this video, I spoke with Bradley G about his struggles to leave gambling in the past. It is not easy to come forward and confront a gambling addiction, but he did just that in this video and is without a doubt on a great path to leaving gambling in the past. I have been in the gambling game for as long as I can remember. It all started with an innocent fantasy football club at my middle school, and amplified from there. Now we can't watch a game without the constant online sportsbook and casino ads promoting the next big way to win money. I got sucked into all of it, and soon enough it was all that I could think about. Every loss creates a sense of failure that has to be rectified with an offsetting win as soon as possible, and every win creates a sense of joy that I can't wait to repeat, and it is all accessible right at our fingertips on our phones. A constant battle of emotions causing everything else in life to be put to back burner, all while losing valuable time and money. 🙏🏻 Recovery Resources: https://odaatgamblingawareness.com/resources 🤝 How I Quit Gambling: https://youtu.be/TsBlTp2wb7I?si=Lknmz1X21amZgE_R ✅ Sign Up For Our Newsletter For A Free Guide On The 4 Steps To Quit Gambling: https://shorturl.at/ogFVu 😅 Subscribe To Avoid Making The Same Mistakes I Did: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH8s1lNHQbXzltQg_aXMAQA?sub_confirmation=1
