What would your life look like if you could take control of your happiness and choose joy daily? My guest today, Dannie De Novo, has explored this question and shares her journey in her book, *Get in a Good Mood & Stay There.* After battling a deep spiritual depression and facing numerous setbacks, Dannie refused to let life happen to her. Instead, she developed a systematic approach to reclaim her mindset, overcome adversity, and design the fulfilling life she had always envisioned. This book is more than a guide; itβs a personal tour through the exercises and insights that transformed her attitude and opened the door to lasting happiness. If happiness feels like a moving target, perhaps itβs time to step into these shoesβare you ready? Join me as I walk in Dannie's shoes.

Have you ever allowed yourself to dream? Picture this: a genie appears, offering you three wishes. But there are conditionsβno asking for love, no bringing back the dead, and no wishing for more wishes. It makes you wonder. What three things would you choose if you had three chances to get something special into your life? Now and then, life gives us moments that feel like a wish fulfilledβan experience so surreal, itβs like magic. For me, that moment came on November 11, 2023, at the North Carolina vs. Duke football game. The night was alive with 50,500 fans packed into Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. The stands were a sea of Carolina blue, buzzing with excitement as the Tar Heels and Blue Devils went head-to-head in one of the fiercest rivalries in college sports. The game had all the intensity of a dream: heart-stopping plays, tense moments, and nail-biting suspense. And just when it seemed like the Tar Heels' hopes might fade, Noah Burnette, todayβs guest, stepped up as time expired, lining up for a 42-yard field goal. The ball sailed just inside the right upright, tying the game at 36 and sending it into overtime. The stadium exploded. As the clock ticked down and North Carolina clinched the win, 47-45, it felt like I was living a storybook endingβone Iβll never forget. The whole weekend was more than a game; it was a trip of a lifetime, an experience that will always be one of my "three wishes come true." Today, I get to relive it all through Noahβs eyes. So join me as I walk in Noah's shoes, sharing this unforgettable moment that left an indelible mark on my heart.

When was the last time you remodeled a room? My guest today is Dr. Merry C. Linn PhD. Imagine you're remodeling a room in your houseβa space where old paint, cluttered shelves, and outdated furniture no longer feel like "you." The process begins by stripping away layers, revealing what lies beneath them. Similarly, in life, finding our true selves isn't just about adding layers; it's about "unbecoming" what we believed we had to be to feel accepted and loved, and "rebecoming" who we truly are, as Dr. Merry C. Lin explores in her transformative book. Just as a room remodel requires intentional effort to create a space that reflects our true taste and purpose, rebecoming our essential, God-given selves requires peeling back the fear-driven habits and self-protection mechanisms that keep us from authentic joy and resilience. Understanding our motivations, identifying patterns rooted in fear, and building resilience parallels the careful choice of new paint, furniture, and dΓ©cor that fit the life we want to live. Itβs a journey to re-create our inner spaces, find the courage to pursue dreams with integrity, and ultimately fulfill Godβs purpose for our lives. Join me as I try on Dr. Merry's shoes.

What does this election season mean to you? On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, Americans across the nation will head to the polls amidst a backdrop that feels as fractured as ever. Tensions run high as pressing issues reveal deep divisions, shaping an election season that underscores a United States that feels, in many ways, like a house divided. Questions about our collective values, the nation's future, and the fundamental direction we're heading are high, and every vote is vital. My guest, Josh Lewis, joins me in unpacking the importance of voting this season and why making your voice heard matters more than ever. But perhaps the question on everyoneβs mind is, who is Josh voting for? Join me as I walk in Josh's shoes.

When was the last time you were humbled? This week on the podcast, Iβm thrilled to welcome Rick Romano, whose heart for serving others has taken him and his family to the Dominican Republic, where they are building sustainable communities in the northern region of El Cibao. Rickβs mission, rooted in the teachings of Christ and inspired by Matthew 25:35-36, calls on us to love those in need. Heβs dedicated himself to this by providing struggling communities with clean water, food, healthcare, and job training. But his work goes beyond just meeting immediate needsβplanting churches and empowering individuals through these practical solutions. Rick believes that building a home for someone less fortunate isnβt an impossible task; itβs an act of love that can transform lives, embodying the call to live beyond ourselves. Join me as I try on Rick's shoes.

When was the last time you opened a box? What was inside? Marriage is like unpacking boxes in lifeβeach box represents a different aspect of the journey, filled with experiences, challenges, and opportunities for growth. My guest today is Tammy Cox. Tammy is here to share with us why marriage can be difficult. However, it doesn't have to be. Just as we carefully unpack a box, revealing its contents piece by piece, in a healthy marriage, we uncover layers of ourselves, our emotions, and our needs. Some boxes hold joyous memories or shared accomplishments, while others contain challenges that must be handled with care. A strong marriage involves the willingness to open these boxes together, communicate openly about their contents, and support each other in sorting through them, whether they are filled with joy or hardship. Just like unpacking, it requires patience, teamwork, and commitment to keep things organized and moving forward. In doing so, couples build a deeper understanding and bond, creating a home where love and trust grow stronger with each box they unpack. Join me as I try on Tammy's shoes.

When was the last time you had to check the "other" box during a survey? Social Identity Theory, developed by Henri Tajfel in the 1970s, explains how people define themselves through group memberships like nationality or religion. This often leads to favoritism toward oneβs in-group and distancing from out-groups, fostering stereotypes and discrimination. When we "Other" peopleβseeing them as outsidersβwe lose compassion and focus on differences instead of shared humanity, reinforcing division. This issue is both psychological and spiritual. God's people are called to bless and care for the marginalized, yet misuse of power often causes harm. My guest today is Jenai Auman. Jenai, work offers hope to those who feel "Othered" by the church, reminding them that God sees and loves the outcast, even when the church fails to. Join me as I walk in Jenai's shoes.

Did you ever do this? I remember when my daughter, Adia, was younger, my wife and I would stand her up against a wall at GGmaβs houseβmy wifeβs grandmotherβand measure her height. As we sold the house, I wondered what the new owners would think of those marks. My guest today is Mark Collins, and he reflects on how those marks, much like childhood height measurements, serve as symbols of growth. For many men, masculinity can feel like an elusive mark, always shifting just beyond reach, as though no matter how hard we try to stand tall, weβre told we donβt measure up. Society often defines what it means to be a man, but like the faded lines on the wall, our value isnβt found in those measurements. Real growth happens in the unseen spaces, where true strength isnβt about height, but depth of character.

EPISODE 300...The journey of a singer-songwriter is often filled with challenges that go beyond the glamorous image portrayed by reality TV shows like *The Voice*, *American Idol*, and *America's Got Talent*. While these platforms promise fame and fortune, the reality is that they often don't deliver lasting success. True artistry and recognition take years of dedication, perseverance, and frequently, the road less traveled. My guest today, Wilkes, has navigated this complex world, finding his voice through mainstream avenues Wilkes was when in the Christian band "Disciple." PLEASE TAKE DISCRETION IN LISTENING TODAY, IF RAPE AND MURDER ARE IN YOUR BACKGROUND. What would happen if you were wrongly accused of something? Has that ever happened? My guest today is Jeff Deskovic was wrongfully imprisoned for 16 years, from the age of 17 to 32, for a rape and murder he did not commit. The injustice of losing his youth to a crime he never committed had a profound impact on his life. His wrongful conviction not only stripped him of his freedom during the critical years of his young adulthood but also left deep emotional scars. The time he spent behind bars shaped his worldview, altering the course of his life in ways that can never be fully repaired. Upon his release, Jeff faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding a life that had been unjustly stolen from him, grappling with the lingering effects of trauma, lost opportunities, and the struggle to find his place in a world that had moved on without him. SEASON FINALE OF DEAR...
When was the last time you attended a funeral or a celebration of life service? Over the years, I've found myself in those seats many times. I wish I could say it gets easier each time, but unfortunately, it doesnβt. During these moments, I often reflect on what I could have or should have said. I know Iβm not alone in feeling this way.
At one of these services, the pastor shared words of encouragement that stayed with me, and I hope they resonate with you too: love the ones you're with, hug the ones you can, miss the ones you should, but sometimes, we ultimately have to let them goβnot from our hearts, but from our grasp.
As we wrap up this season of Other People's Shoes, we look forward to sharing more stories with you in the fall.
π
Miss Me, But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a littleβbut not for long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
For this journey that we all must take
And each must go alone;
Itβs all a part of the Masterβs plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me, but let me go.

Looking forward to next week as we start season 18 called "Homecoming"

Think about marriage for a moment. Who is a could that you know that has been married the longest. Three days ago my wife Elizabeth and I just celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary. My guest today is Kyle Jetsel. Kyle shares losing his wife of 30 years felt like the world stopped spinning for Kyleβa void that seemed impossible to fill. The silence in the house was deafening, the weight of her absence almost unbearable. Yet, in the depths of that pain, Kyle knew he had to find a way forwardβnot just for himself, but for their children and the legacy they had built together. He chose to find strength in the love they shared, letting that love fuel his days instead of his grief. Kyle began to focus on living a life that honored her memory, finding reasons to smile again, to breathe deeply, and to inspire others to cherish every moment with their loved ones. Through this journey, he realized that the best way to honor her was to live fully, love well, and leave a legacy that their children could carry forwardβa legacy of resilience, kindness, and an unshakable belief in the power of love. Join me as I walk in Kyle's pearl white Lebron James signature shoes.

What is something that you absolutely, can't stand? I tried once making a list. If you were to make a list where would grief fall in the rankings? My guest today is Chelsea Ohlemiller. She wrote this brand new book called "Now That She's Gone". Chelsea is here to share her story about grief. Grief is profoundly challenging to cope with because it encompasses a wide range of intense emotions, from deep sorrow and anger to confusion and guilt. This emotional turbulence often arises from the loss of a loved one, a significant life change, or an unfulfilled dream, leading to a sense of emptiness and helplessness. The process of grieving disrupts our daily lives, impacting our mental and physical health. To navigate through grief, it is essential to allow oneself to feel and express these emotions rather than suppressing them. Seeking support from friends, family, or professional counselors can provide comfort and understanding. Additionally, engaging in self-care practices, such as maintaining a routine, exercising, and finding creative outlets, can help in gradually rebuilding one's life and finding a new sense of normalcy. Recognizing that grief is a personal journey and giving oneself the grace and time to heal is crucial. Join me as we walk in Chelsea's shoes.

Where were you on July 20, 1984? That was the day The movie "The NeverEnding Story" was released in the United States. My guest today is Nancy Bruscher. Nancy believes wholeheartedly in the fact that there is power in your story. The power of remembering and sharing your story lies in the profound connection it fosters between individuals and generations. Each person's life is a tapestry woven with experiences, lessons, and values that are uniquely theirs. These stories are not only a testament to their journey but also a beacon of wisdom and resilience for others. When we share our stories, we affirm our value and humanity, offering insights that can inspire, guide, and comfort us. Future generations, in particular, need to remember our family stories, for they are the custodians of our legacy. By preserving these narratives, they gain a deeper understanding of their roots, a sense of belonging, and the strength to navigate their own paths. In this way, our stories transcend time, becoming a vital thread in the fabric of our collective human experience. Join me as we walk in Nancy's sandals.

Do you love the story of Winnie the Pooh? My favorite part is the image of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin walking with an umbrella is a powerful depiction of companionship and support. My guest today is Noah Asher. Noah talks about how as they stroll together, the umbrella shields them from the unpredictable elements, symbolizing the protective presence of friendship. Just as the umbrella guards them against the rain, having someone by our side can help us navigate the chaos of life. With its inherent ups and downs, this shared journey becomes more manageable when we have a trusted companion to lean on. The umbrella, much like a steadfast friend, provides comfort and reassurance, reminding us that we are never truly alone in facing life's storms. Join me as we walk in Noah's shoes.

When was the last time you heard the phrase "I know how you feel" My guest today is Cate Purvis. Cate is here to share how she found the strength to get through her miscarriages. Miscarriage is a profoundly difficult experience for women to navigate alone due to the intense emotional, physical, and psychological toll it takes. The grief and sense of loss can be overwhelming, compounded by feelings of guilt, shame, or inadequacy, even though these feelings are unfounded. Physically, the body undergoes significant changes, and the recovery process can be painful and exhausting. The emotional turmoil can lead to depression, anxiety, and isolation, especially if societal stigmas or lack of understanding prevent open conversations about the loss. The support of loved ones, friends, and professionals is crucial in providing the emotional comfort, validation, and care needed to help women heal and process their grief. Take a moment and think about your worst day. Perhaps it was the day you dumped coffee all over yourself right before you walked into work? Maybe it was the day your baby pooped all over your brand-new pants? Or maybe it was a very sad day when a loved one died? All these examples seem dire and even awful. Did your worst day involve your job? I believe one of the hardest jobs is law enforcement. My guest today is Jared Altic. Jared has dedicated his life's work to helping law enforcement. Being in law enforcement is fraught with dangers, making it one of the most dangerous professions. Officers regularly face life-threatening situations, from confronting armed suspects to navigating high-speed pursuits. The risk of physical harm is ever-present, whether during routine traffic stops, domestic disputes, or responding to active crime scenes. Additionally, law enforcement personnel are often targets of violence and may suffer from psychological stress due to the high-stakes nature of their work. The constant exposure to danger and traumatic events can lead to long-term mental health issues, such as PTSD. Despite rigorous training and protective measures, the unpredictable nature of their duties means that law enforcement officers must always remain vigilant, underscoring the significant risks they endure to ensure public safety. Join me as I walk in Jared's shoes.

When is it okay to be angry at God? Is there ever a time you have found yourself in that spot? My guest today is Julie Sunne. You would like by Julie's name that never rains or Julie has never had a bad day. We all know that is completely preposterous. Recovering from five miscarriages and four live births involves a multifaceted approach addressing both emotional and physical well-being. Emotionally, it is essential to seek support from loved ones, therapists, or support groups to navigate the grief and complex emotions associated with loss. Engaging in activities that promote mental health, such as journaling, meditation, or creative pursuits, can also be beneficial. Physically, it is important to work with healthcare providers to ensure proper recovery and address any underlying medical conditions that may contribute to pregnancy loss. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, exercise, and possibly fertility treatments or interventions might be part of the physical recovery process. Emphasizing self-care, setting realistic expectations, and allowing time for healing are crucial for regaining balance and moving forward. Join me as we delicately walk in Julie's shoes.
