  • In the heart of Albuquerque, Pastor Greg Griego often stood before the fire department and the local jail, sharing his powerful testimony of redemption. Once entangled in the world of gangs in California, he had found a new path through faith, a transformation that resonated with those who listened. He was well-known and well-liked in the community. Greg Griego. Once a soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division, Greg had led a life marred by drugs and gangs. However, during a stint in jail in California in the early 1990s, he experienced a profound transformation, finding faith and embracing Christianity. This pivotal change set him on a path of redemption, ultimately leading him to serve others. While his wife, Sarah, dedicated herself to homeschooling their ten children in their modest home in the semi-rural South Valley. Greg had five children before he met his wife, Sarah, with whom he had five more. Greg turned their backyard barn into a sanctuary for released prisoners. Most would agree that Greg and Sarah were strict parents. They prohibited their children from playing violent video games and meticulously monitored their television choices. Greg Griego was determined to cultivate a home of hope, love, and healing, but that all ended on January 19, 2013.

  • This case is shocking. Shocking in many ways and I can't believe it's not talked about.

The only place I've seen this is on Southern Gothic from our friend Brandon. When he first saw a small blurb about it in a book, he didn't even think it was true so he asked Lauretta to do some research. Sure enough, it is 100% true. As sensational as it was and is, I can't believe it's been forgotten. So after you listen, make sure you catch the Southern Gothic episode "The Curious Case of Knox Martin."

In late March of 1879, in Davidson County, Tennessee, a wagon carrying a prisoner by the name of Knox Martin was headed to the gallows. John Kirk and Sons were busy building the scaffold that would host the hanging later that afternoon.

Mothers pulled their children out of school so that they could take them to the execution. Nearly 10,000 people were making their way to the location nestled between two ridges; some had even camped out overnight to guarantee the best view. For years to come, some folks in attendance at this execution would have an unbelievable story to tell.

It appears that in the days leading up to his date with the gallows, Knox Martin was approached by two doctors from the nearby Vanderbilt University, who, having great interest in galvanism, and who, having read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, wondered if Knox Martin would allow them to use his dead body for an unusual and ethically questionable experiment. Knox Martin had agreed.

Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "The Second Death of the Bells Bend Killer: Nashville's Frankenstein."

  • It is January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin’s brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura’s mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Though Kevin wanted to continue their journey that night, little did they know, that the warmth of the cafe would soon be overshadowed by a chilling darkness, as their lives would be forever altered by the intentions of those they encountered.

  • In Logan County, West Virginia, there have been sightings of the ghost of a murdered woman that haunts 22 Mine Road. But underneath the spooky legend and sightings is a chilling story about the free-loving, warm-hearted Mamie Thurman who knew too much.

It was the height of the Depression, and America saw the lowest numbers recorded on the stock market exchange. Prohibition was in full swing, and speakeasies and gambling houses permeated the town of Logan.

On Wednesday, June 22nd, 1932, a berry picker found Mamie Thurman's body on the side of a mountain. Her throat had been slashed. While investigating, police found that Mamie had been living a double life. A life that was deemed immoral by most of the town.

Clarence Stephenson, a black "odd jobs man," would be found guilty of the murder of Mamie Thurman and sentenced to life in prison, where he claimed his innocence until the day he died.

To this day, many think Clarence Stephenson is innocent, and Mamie's murder is still unsolved.
And there are some that believe Mamie haunts 22 Mine Road because her real killer was never brought to justice.

Light a pumpkin-spiced candle for spooky season and join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Something About Mamie: The Murder of Mamie Thurman."

  • Today we are headed to Laurelwood, Oregon where we meet a young woman named Margo Compton. Margo grew up in Solano County, California. She was a bright child who made good grades and had good friends. Things started to change for Margo. Margo ended up getting married in August of 1969 to Doug Compton at just 16 years old. At first, all seemed good in their marriage. Things changed when Doug met new friends from the Nomads motorcycle club, an offshoot of the Hell’s Angeles. When Margo got pregnant, the violence began. This led to them both doing drugs and it was rumored that Doug often beat Margo. Doug started hanging out increasingly with the bikers and less at home. In July 1977, Margo testified in a California criminal case against a high-ranking member of the Hell’s Angels. This would be a fatal mistake.

  • On a frigidly cold night in 1976, in a western suburb of Chicago, sixteen-year-old Pamela Maurer was hanging out at her friend’s house in Woodridge, Illinois. Around 9:45 p.m., Pam decided she needed a pick-me-up and told her friends she was heading out to get a soda. Pam put on her plaid coat and headed out into the frozen night, her breath billowing and catching on the wind. She pulled her coat close and made her way through the snow-covered neighborhood.

When Pam did not return to her friend's house that night, none of her friends were all that worried. After all, her curfew was 10:00 p.m., and they assumed she went straight home after buying her soda. But Pam never got her soda. She never made it home, either. She would be found early the next morning when a county road commissioner came across her body lying frozen in the snow.

It would take forty years to find Pamela Maurer's killer.

However, the case doesn't end there. In fact, investigators found that it was just getting started.

Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "Under The Radar: The Murder of Pamela Maurer."

*In this episode, I, Jen, accidentally say Woodbridge Illinois. It's actually Woodridge. My apologies.

  • On the morning of January 7, 2018, at 9:25 a.m., a chilling call was made to the 911 dispatch in Belgrade, Montana. A distressed woman reported that her neighbor had just come to her home in a panic, explaining she had returned to her residence to discover her two roommates had been shot. One roommate, she believed, was gravely injured but still clinging to life. Terrified, the neighbor had fled the scene and sought refuge, desperately asking for help. Law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched, though they had no idea what they were walking into. The initial report indicated that one female was dead and another, a 30-year-old, was wounded and unconscious. Recognizing this may be a difficult scene, the first responding officer requested backup as he approached the scene. Upon arrival, the officer was met by a visibly shaken woman—the roommate who had gone to her neighbor for help, now standing before him, clearly distraught. She was the third resident of the home, the one who had just witnessed the aftermath of what appeared to be a horrifying crime within her own home. • On Saturday, February 20th, 2016, Matt called for an Uber driver around 4:00 in the afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When the Uber driver arrived at about 4:20 p.m., Matt noticed a dog in the backseat..

The Uber driver began driving recklessly, ignoring stop signs and driving into the median. He sped into an oncoming traffic lane, blew through a stop sign, and sideswiped a Ford Taurus. But outwardly, the driver acted like nothing was wrong. Matt was terrified. “Dude, you just hit that car!” he yelled at the driver. But the driver just said, “I didn’t hit anything.” In the back seat, the family dog lunged for the floorboard where she stayed. Matt begged him to stop the car, but the driver wouldn’t.

Matt continued to plead with the driver for the next few minutes to let him out.
The man said, “Don’t you need a ride to your friend’s house?” Matt yelled, “Not anymore! Let me out! Let me out!” But still, the driver ignored his pleas. Finally, the driver pulled onto Iroquois Trail and asked, “Which one is your friend’s house?” Matt took that opportunity to jump out of the car and run. A couple was sitting outside having a cigarette break and saw what happened. They immediately called 911. According to the woman, the 911 operator blew her off.

By the end of the night, that Uber driver would go on to kill six people and severely injure 2 more.

  • On Sunday, August 23, 1992, Tammy Jo Zywicki, a 21-year-old college student, had just dropped off her 19-year-old brother, Daren, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The siblings had been traveling from the East Coast, and Tammy was eager to return to college. During their journey, the car, a white 1985 Pontiac T1000, had been experiencing issues, requiring frequent stops to add oil or water. After staying the night, Daren advised Tammy to monitor the vehicle closely on her journey back to college and pull over to a rest area if it acted up, especially given the day's heat. Tammy would never make it back to college.

  • On the afternoon of September 19th, 1978, Carl Bridgewater, 13, hopped on his bike and started his paper route. In fifteen minutes, he arrived at Yew Tree Farmhouse, owned by Mary Poole, 79, and Fred Jones, 75, who were roommates at the farm. Both were elderly and answering the door often took them a long time. So, Carl was instructed to leave the paper in a basket outside. But if the door was open, he was supposed to take the paper inside and deliver it to them directly. However, Mary and Fred were away on this particular day. They’d gone out on a visit. Carl noticed the door was open, so he stepped inside the house to deliver the paper, as he was supposed to.

Around 5:30 p.m., a friend of the cousins stopped by. The door was open; he walked in and found Carl Bridgewater’s dead body on a settee in the sitting room. Was it a robbery gone wrong?

Four men were charged with the murder of Carl Bridgewater after police obtained a false confession. Three of the men would serve eighteen years in prison before having their convictions overturned. The fourth unfortunately died in 1981.

    So, who killed Carl Bridgewater?

  • It is May 24, 2000, and we are going to Tuscarawas County in Ohio to New Philadelphia. It is exactly what you think of when you say small-town America, with lots of farmland and friendly people. Elizabeth Reiser who goes by Liz is a 17-year-old high school student who is looking forward to graduating and finding out all that life has to hold for her. Her good friend 18 year old Brandi Hicks asked Liz to come over and stay the night with her. On this day Brandi who was in the school choir was going to the choir banquet and wanted Liz to go with her. Even though it was a school night, her mother relented and said yes. That evening, the two friends visited a video store in New Philadelphia after the choir banquet to rent some videos for a movie night. When they left the store and started to get into the car, a man approached them. The man claimed he had no means of getting home and asked the girls for a ride, telling them he lived nearby. The girls hesitated and told them they really needed to get home. The man then offered them $20 as an incentive. The girls did not want to give this stranger a ride, but he urged them to, and they relented. They were young, naive, and always looked for the best in people. After all, he only needed to go across town and then they could go back and watch the movie they had rented. Neither Brandi nor Liz would ever get to watch that movie.

    Content warning: Child death

2017 was a wondrously magical Christmas season. Heaps of heavy white snow had piled on top of Oak Bay on Vancouver Island, and everybody, except maybe the most die-hard winter haters, was excited at the prospect of building snowmen and sledding.

On Christmas Day, Sarah awaited the arrival of her daughters, Chloe and Aubrey. They had been with their father, Andrew, the days before the holiday and were due to be home at noon. The set drop-off time came and went, and there was no sign of Andrew, Chloe, and Aubrey. Calls and texts were unanswered. Sarah drove to Andrew's house, and when Aubrey and Chloe didn’t appear at the window, Sarah grew even more concerned.

  • It is just after 10:30 p.m. on June 3, 1999, and we go to 23-year-old Bobby Bornt's home in Perry, Oklahoma. He sleeps on the couch, and his 9-month-old baby boy sleeps in a nearby room. Suddenly, a loud noise startled him awake. Three men entered the house after kicking in the front door. The three strangers beat Bobby mercilessly, but not all were strangers; Bobby recognized 23-year-old Clayton Locket as the tattoo artist who had recently done some artwork on him. The other two men were 26-year-old Shawn Mathis and Clayton’s 17-year-old cousin Alfonzo Lockett. Clayton wielded a shotgun, which he used to strike Bobby repeatedly. After the brutal beating, the attackers bound Bobby's hands behind his back with duct tape, gagged him, and left him on the couch. They then proceeded to ransack the house in search of drugs. What started as a “teach him a lesson” would end with a vicious murder on not just this warm June night but yet another murder in 2014 in what some experts would deem the most inhumane.

After 32-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Klein didn't show up for work on March 16, 2007, her wife of seven years, Nicole Abusharif, set off looking for her. After driving around their neighborhood, she found Becky’s car, a white work van, parked on the side of the road near their home. The van was unlocked, and the keys were in the ignition. Nicole then called the police to report her wife missing.

The next day, police found Becky's body locked inside the trunk of a car in her own garage.

  • Today’s case takes us to Mason City, Iowa. It's July 25, 1993, and like most school-aged kids, summer is the reward after being stuck in a classroom for nine months. Six-year-old Amber Duncan was no different. After an afternoon of playing on a Slip 'n Slide with her best friend, Brittney, Amber headed home around 3 PM, still wet from a day of fun in the water. As the little girl waved goodbye to her best friend, no one could have known it would be the last time she'd be seen. But Amber wasn’t the only one to go missing. What followed were years of agonizing questions and desperate searches. This is one of the most disturbing cases I've ever covered, and the man at the center of it all is a real-life Walter White. • On a warm, partly cloudy night in Vidor,(ViE Dur) Texas, a newspaper boy, up early for his route, noticed that a black 1991 Mercury sedan was pitched forward in the ditch just off Interstate 10. The ditch was located between West Bolivar and the freeway access road. He immediately called the police to report the vehicle and that he was pretty sure there was a body in the front seat.

When the police arrived on the scene at West Bolivar and I-10, they immediately saw that there was a body of a woman sitting behind the steering wheel of the car. Her body was upright, back against the seat, and her head was turned toward the right, slightly nestled against the headrest. Her feet were pulled back toward the seat, and she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. When officers called out, “Ma’am?” she did not respond. They checked for a pulse and found that she was dead. The woman’s purse and ID were sitting upright on the car's floorboard, but the police already knew who she was. Kathy Page was the wife of Steve Page, whom Detective Ray Mosely had known for most of his life.

This murder inspired the Oscar-winning movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which Starred Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Peter Dinklage.

  • Today, we are headed to Riverdale, Georgia, on August 2, 2004, where the Fayetteville Sheriff’s office gets a call from a 16-year-old named Sara Polk, who informs them that there had been a murder or two, to be exact, and proceeds to give them the address of the location where the killing had occurred. Det Bruce Jordan takes the call and arrives on the scene to find two people savagely murdered. The first victim, 74-year-old Carl Collier, was located in the kitchen, which had blood spatter everywhere. Walking through to discover the next victim, investigators see a small bloody barefoot print on the floor. The print would lead them to the basement stairs. Detectives make their way down the stairs, where they see the second victim, 73-year-old Sarah Collier, at the bottom of the staircase. The scene was bloody and brutal. It was clear that the perpetrator was violent and skilled in murder.

  • Greg stared at his phone and wondered why Joanna, his girlfriend and flatmate, wasn’t answering his calls. Greg had spent the weekend with his family in Sheffield, U.K., which was about four hours north of Bristol, where he shared the apartment with Joanna. Maybe she was just busy. It was, after all, the weekend before Christmas. But still, it wasn’t like her to not reply to him at all. Could her phone be dead? If it was, it had been dead all weekend because she hadn’t responded to his calls or texts since before 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

“Joanna?” he called out as he entered. But he got no answer. Her purse was there. The keys were there, and a bottle of cider sat on the counter. It was half full. Where was she? He called her cell phone again, calling her name and looking in the closets. He stopped. Her cell phone was ringing from inside the flat. “Joanna!?” he called out again. Any hope he had that Joanna was somewhere in the apartment was dashed as he realized the phone was ringing inside her coat pocket. The temperatures had not reached above freezing the whole weekend. Now he was really worried; Joanna wouldn't have left without her coat. Now he was really worried. With a sinking feeling in his gut, he called the police.

  • Today's case takes us to Marietta, Georgia. The book centered on this case was one of the first true crime books I had read, and it has always stuck with me. The book Secrets Never Lie: The Death of Sara Tokars- A Southern Tragedy of Money, Murder, and Innocence Betrayed is by R. Robin McDonald. It is November 29, 1992, and Thanksgiving weekend has just ended. 39-year-old Sara has been visiting with her parents and her sisters in Bradenton, Florida, for the holiday weekend, but it was time for her and her two boys, 6-year-old Ricky and 4-year-old Mike load up the Toyota SUV to make the 9-hour trek back home to Marietta Georgia, an affluent suburb of Atlanta. After the three had departed, Sara’s husband Fred called the parent's home to inquire if they were on the road yet. Fred, who had been there earlier, had departed earlier as he had a meeting with a client that he couldn’t miss. Sara’s father, Dr John Ambrusko, had answered the call from Fred and told him they they had just departed. It was almost 10 pm when Sara and the boys pulled into her garage. Sara started to unload the car as one of the boys had fallen asleep in his car seat. As she was unloading, a strange man came out of the darkness. The man, who was carrying a sawed-off shotgun, forced Sara and little Ricky back into the car. What happened next is what nightmares are made of, what mothers fear most, and is proof that true evil exists.

  • It was 1996, and all anybody could talk about in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada was the Abbotsford Killer. A few months before, a sadistic, barbaric individual had beaten two girls with a baseball bat, raped one, and thrown her body in the Vedder River.

The killer taunted the police and terrorized an entire community of 108,000 people by promising that there would be more bodies. And he was still at large. People, especially women, were terrified to go anywhere.

What would make somebody do something like that? What would make him taunt the police and terrorize the victim’s family?
