  • This episode brings you an exhilarating conversation with Amy Taylor Kabbaz.

Amy began her career as a dedicated ABC Journalist and Producer and was driven by her work for 15 years. She honestly believed that becoming a mother would not impact her profession...until it did.

In 2015, having brought herself to the edge of overwhelm and burnout trying to prove that she could “do it all”, she stepped away from a lifelong dream of working for the ABC to dedicate herself completely to the understanding of motherhood. Amy knew that what she had been through was something too many mothers were experiencing.

Her search path took her to the office of Doctor Aurelie Athan at Columbia University in New York and Amy finally understood the answer she'd be seeking. It came in the form of a word...this word was Matrescence.

With the help of Doctor Athan, and many other mentors, Amy has offered awareness, education and training to more than 5,000 mothers through her online programs, coaching, events and her book, Mama Rising - Discovering the New You through Motherhood.

Amy believes that when mothers understand the milestones and markers of Matrescence, they can navigate this time of their lives powerfully - without overwhelm, perfectionism and shame.

This is a thought-provoking episode for ALL mothers because just as Postpartum is Forever, so Matrescence is Forever.

    Enjoy!

I am proud to share with you that I am educated and trained through Mama Rising.

This is an exceptional course for anyone who is wanting to gain further understanding of their own Matrescence, enabling them to education and guide other mothers through Matrescence.

In 2019, she launched her world first Matrescence Coaching Training and now has over 250 coaches globally, and in 2023, established the Global Matrescence Foundation with the mission to change the way mothers are supported and valued in the world, whether in the boardroom, birthing suite or outback.

  • In this week's solo episode, I open the conversation on the Postpartum Pillars of Care for a newborn mother.

This episode is the first of a four-part series, and it discusses one pillar, being the Postpartum Diet.

It offers education and awareness on the foods that are beneficial for the mother and her baby, and the foods that are not beneficial. I share practical tips and actionable ways to plan, prepare, and ensure that you are set up and fed warm, comforting foods that feel right and also assist with your healing, recovery and breastmilk supply. This episode offers a bigger picture perspective for postpartum planning and has been designed with pregnant women in mind, or those wanting to support a mother in her postpartum and would like guidance.

I hope that you enjoy the episode.

  • Today I speak with Ysaline, mother of two, life coach and doula.

Ysaline recounts her own very different postpartum experiences, in part due to her father passing just two months after her baby was born, and one baby being born during the time of the Covid 19 pandemic, a period when there was no clear vision of the future and so much uncertainty as to when she could hug her overseas family again.

We chat about the unrealistic expectations we often place on ourselves as mothers, the beliefs we may carry around sadness, crying and sleep, and the powerful transformation we go through and why support, care and help is vital to every mother.

Ysaline shares her beautiful practice of Rebozo massage, rooted in Mexican cultural practices for releasing physical tension, working through the emotions, slowing down and deeply honouring the complexity of all of life's transitions.

Ysaline runs womens circles in Sydney and monthly Mums' Cafe Connect meetups in Redfern in both English & French languages.

  • WELCOME TO THE 'POSTPARTUM IS FOREVER' PODCAST.

Every month we will look back at a previous episode to highlight the pearls of wisdom often missed or forgotten in the long-form episodes.

The reflective essence of the episode's message will be clear and concise for those of us with little time to spare, perhaps prompting some to go back and listen to the entire episode.

This extract is from our first episode, a general introduction and what to expect, with some important reminders about Matrescence and what it means to be a modern mother.

I truly hope you enjoy these bite-sized Matrescence Moments.

  • Today I speak with the lovely Sophie Burch AKA, the Mamma Coach. Sophie is on a mission to put mental and emotional wellbeing more on the map in pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting. Sophie has been a mother for 18 years to 4 boys (including twins). She is also a perinatal therapist coach, a birth trauma and PND survivor. Her experience has shaped who she is and awakened her to a life of compassion and deep empathy for everyone from pre-conception through parenting to menopause. Her approach is simple: to allow people to feel held and heard, safe and worthy of love and self acceptance. Sophie believes that our strength comes from self compassion, kindness and knowledge, which is her ethos.

2020 saw her launch her book, Beyond Birth: A Mindful Guide for Early Parenting. This guide is available as a published book on Amazon, as an ebook and audiobook. Further, she has created parent-baby support sessions and a practitioner training course, which I have personally participated in.

Sophie is a trainer and team member at Perinatal Mental Health Training CIC with leading Perinatal expert and author Dr Jane Hanley and offers online and in-person training, 1:1 therapy and coaching. She has spoken on the mental health expert panel at The Baby Show twice, alongside leading campaigners and doctors.

I know you'll get a lot of value from this episode and please reach out to myself or Sophie if you would like to share or offer feedback and/or benefit further from Sophie's expertise & support.

I hope you enjoy the episode and please do reach out if this conversation has evoked big feelings.

  • Welcome back, everyone.

This week on the Podcast I will continue with our in-depth exploration of MATRESCENCE.

If you haven't yet absorbed the 2 previous episodes in the Matrescence series, please listen to those first as this is a continuation of those themes and will make much more sense if you have done so.

For part 3 we will discuss how the various stages and experiences within Matrescence shape and strongly influence who we are now and who we are becoming.

We really are at a crossroads where we have been given the incredible opportunity to recreate ourselves in any way we wish. This comes with so many intense and diverse challenges, but together we can all get there.

It is a beautiful and powerful stage and one which can and will uproot us from everything that came before motherhood as Matrescence will last a lifetime.

    Postpartum REALLY is Forever.

I hope you enjoy the episode.

  • ** Warning - this episode shares an experience of Stillbirth. Please use discretion when deciding if this episode is right for you. **

Today, a mother named Fatima shares her experience of birthing three children, whereby one of them, her daughter, was born still. Whilst this is understandably a sensitive and painful topic, Fatima speaks so gracefully about her beautiful, serene and intimate birth in which she met her baby girl and then bravely farewelled her.

This topic can trigger the pain of loss, particularly the loss of a child, and I ask that you listen with self-compassion and reach out for support if this has been your experience.

Fatima talks openly about the silence that happens after the baby is born, the truth that your body will still go into a physiological 'postpartum phase' after losing a baby, the need to give your body time to rest and recover and the emotional challenges that arise with this.

Fatima beautifully brings light into what could be a very heavy conversation with her softness and inner wisdom, calmness and knowing. Be kind to yourself and I hope that you enjoy this episode.

  • Today I speak with Jess, a Registered Nurse, an International Board Lactation Consultant

and a Children's & Family Health Nurse. Jess provides quality care in the

form of home visits to families in the postpartum period and beyond. Her

expertise in the public system as an Early Childhood family nurse and now as an

IBCLC means she can approach her work in a holistic personalised and

    family-centred way.

With the opening of her practice Ilumina Family Health, Jess has built strong

partnerships with local Sydney Obstetricians to fill a gap in the system of

those leaving private hospitals and perhaps not receiving the same pathway to

    follow-up care.

In addition, Jess is a mother of two and brings understanding, passion and a LOT

  • This week I have the honour of speaking with Ali.

Ali is a mother, circle facilitator, postpartum doula, motherhood studies practitioner and matrescence educator.

During this episode, Ali gracefully shares with us her experience of losing her own mother to cancer and the impact that this deeply hurtful loss had on the way she mothered without the support of her own mother. She shares that despite the grief & devastation, she felt her mother gifting her the permission to show up in life in ways that matter most to her.

Ali takes us through many of the emotions she experienced as her identity unfolded in motherhood, including learning how to take the evolution of being numb in anger, to expressing rage and then equipping herself to express anger in healthy ways and to role model this for her children.

Ali is a warm & sensitive soul. I found this conversation so heartwarming.

  • Today I chat with a mother of one named Mirjana.

Mirjana talks about the ambivalence of motherhood,

how she stepped into the role of mother despite not

previously feeling like a "maternal person".

She shares how having a straightforward pregnancy

does not always lead to a straightforward birth,

and the feelings of isolation after the honeymoon

period is over. When the hormonal shifts and sleep

deprivation really kick in and your partner has

    returned to work.

We touch on the common and normal experience

of intrusive thoughts and mostly how important

it is to have some support measures in place for

    when your baby arrives.

  • Today I chat with Britt. A mother of two young boys.

Britt shares her experiences in birth, postpartum and motherhood. And then openly about the challenges she faced when going from one child to two, and how it grieved her to watch the disruption and adjustments that this had on her relationship with her first-born son.

And how it made her feel sad to witness the felt impact this had on him during those early months. We talk about the seasons of motherhood, and how everything is a phase, and that along with loss comes even more gain.

Britt shares her story so authentically and pleasantly, that I'm sure many mothers will relate to her experiences.

  • [Note: This episode shares information on delicate topics, such as postnatal mood disorders, postnatal psychosis & suicide. Please use discretion when deciding if this conversation is right for you. ]

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, I speak with Lisiane Latouche, a Perinatal & Infant Mental Health Clinician with over 30 years experience. I have personally known Lisiane for 15 years and have had the privilege of working with her both in private practice and in other mother-baby events & workshops, our latest initiative being a Mums & Bub weekend retreat.

This is an insightful and informative conversation in which Lisiane brings both her expertise and authentic self together to explain the various challenges new families may face when transitioning to parenthood.

She details how we can determine the difference between things like the baby blues, maternal overwhelm, perinatal mood disorders, including postnatal depression and anxiety as well as educates on the delicate topic of postnatal psychosis, a rare, but serious postnatal disorder that requires a prompt and specialised approach.

You can’t help but notice Lisiane’s compassion and dedication to her work and generously shares resources and a message of reassurance to all mothers that, despite the hurdles, most mums are doing their best and that this is enough. It is comforting to note that even if there are times, as a mother, that we become emotionally or psychologically unwell, we can recover and move forward into fulfilling and healthy lives with ourselves and our families.

I hope you enjoy this episode.

  • Today, I'm having a very important conversation with a mum named Kate.

Kate shares very openly and candidly about her personal journey into motherhood, which involves the loss and grief around two miscarriages and one medical termination within the space of one year. This is not an easy topic and I ask that you use discretion when deciding if the content is right for you at present, depending on your own experiences, and the feelings it may raise.

Whilst Kate does not sugar-coat the hard parts and the toll these cruel experiences have on our body, mind & soul, she also speaks with such dignity and compassion when talking of her losses and you can't help but notice the hope in her voice.

Kate is using her painful experiences to promote the change that she would like to see in her workplace, the construction industry. She has now trained to be a doula and is using these skills and understanding to bring awareness and emotional support to her colleagues going through similar situations and facilitating positive workplace policies and changes that support women, who are mothers, with maternity leave and return to work conditions.

This is so heartening. I hope you get something positive from this episode and please do reach out for support if this conversation has been difficult or raised deep feelings for you.

  • Today I chat with Courtney who is a mother of three children under 7.

Courtney shares about her initiation into becoming a mother, her three very different postpartum experiences, one of which included her husband taking a year of paternity leave and how this benefited their relationship

She also shares her insights on what motherhood has taught her, things like slowing down and finding her playfulness again as well as the adjustments in returning to paid work and the challenges that brings to mothers who are often feeling 'guilty' when they receive that call from daycare that their child is sick and needs to be collected for the 8th time in the last 6 weeks.

This is an insightful and practical conversation that I know many mothers will both relate to and feel encouraged by as they move througn their own daily mothering experiences.

  • Today I speak with a mother named Ashleigh.

In this episode, we speak in detail about what it means to have pregnancy pre-eclampsia, and how to manage this pregnancy-induced condition.

Ashleigh also shares very openly and honestly the challenges that come after she brought her baby home, including postpartum anxiety, depression, and the intensity of triple-feeding, and why this is a time that you really need to have a village.

She reflects on how embracing the chaos, and leaning into the movement, is when she was really able to start enjoying being with her child.

confidence to set boundaries in their life?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, I speak with a mother of two girls, named Lucia.

I first met Lucia after the birth of her second daughter when I was honoured to

world that works against them, is truly inspiring, and just listening to her passion
