Fear of rejection and fear of abandonment are certainly similar, but they hold some important differences. In fact, what you do to heal your fear of rejection, is not necessarily what you do to heal your fear of abandonment. Although theyâre closely related, theyâre still distinct emotional experiences and they show up differently in your relationships, your self-perception, and in your coping mechanisms. When narcissistic, controlling people feel backed into a corner, meaning theyâre exposed, challenged, or losing control, they tend to react with a range of defensive, aggressive, or manipulative behaviors. Their reactions stem from a fragile ego, a deep-seated fear of losing power, and an inability to process shame or vulnerability in a healthy way. Some of the most high-profile examples of this play out with celebrities who have controlling or narcissistic tendencies and canât handle being held accountable.
Weâre going to do something completely different today. Iâm going to dive into three current and past celebrity cases: Ryan Reynoldsâ role in the legal battle involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, Bill Cosbyâs downfall, and Kevin Spaceyâs courtroom drama, to examine exactly what people with narcissistic tendencies do when theyâre backed into a corner. More importantly, weâll discuss what you can learn from these situations when dealing with narcissistic, manipulative people in your own life.

If you want to heal emotionally, you have to focus on what youâre doing now, not what happened in the past. Itâs, of course, important to speak about your past and get clear on some of your why, but the big mistake I find clients making is that they just want to keep talking about their childhood or a bad breakup and not focus on what they can do now. Talking about your past wonât heal you. Taking action will. But you need to take the right action. You heal yourself emotionally by getting good at three components: 1) Learning self-regulation, 2) Making mindfulness a habit, and 3) Practicing self-acceptance/self-compassion. The trick is that you need to do these in that order. Too many people are trying to practice self-acceptance, but they havenât had any experience in self-regulation or mindfulness. Itâs then incredibly hard to work on your self-compassion or acceptance, so you give up! Last week, in episode 316, we went all in on self-regulation. This week, youâll learn to master mindfulness and self-acceptance/self-compassion. Letâs dive in.

Youâve talked about your past and likely know a lot of the reasons why youâve got issues (I say with love). The problem is that even though you might know the why (or think you do), you donât feel better. You continue to repeat unhealthy relationship cycles and youâre still not maintaining your boundaries with others. Or maybe youâre overeating or smoking too much pot. You know why youâve got some dysfunctional habits, but that hasnât resulted in you healing emotionally. Talking about your childhood or a bad relationship, initially is great, but spending all your time on the why and not on the how is keeping you stuck. Healing yourself emotionally is comprised of three main areas: 1) learning self-regulation, 2) mindfulness, and 3) self-acceptance/self-compassion. Today weâll be focusing on that first step, self-regulation. Next week, weâll tackle mindfulness and self-acceptance/compassion.

Entitlement. Itâs a word we toss around casually, usually about other people. (âDid you see how she cut the line? The entitlement!â) But hereâs the thing: entitlement is sneakier than we think. It can show up in the most unexpected places, like our relationships, our workplaces, and even how we navigate society at large. Today youâll get a clear picture of what entitlement is, why it happens, and (brace yourself) how it might be showing up in your own behavior. Radical acceptance is about fully acknowledging and accepting reality as it is, especially when itâs something we donât like or want to change. This approach, popularized by Dr. Marsha Linehan as part of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), encourages us to embrace what we canât control instead of resisting it. But radical acceptance isnât easy. The idea challenges our instincts, often triggering discomfort and frustration, especially if weâre used to holding tightly to that illusion of being in control. Or, if you canât get past that something isnât right or fair.
