In this new episode, I chat with Annie about her fantastic album 'All Born Screaming' the 7th studio album from St Vincent. The record spans a wide array of influences and sounds combining industrial art rock, pop, rave, dub etc with a haunting lyrical quality all delivered beautifully. 'All Born Screaming' unsurprisingly is one of my favourite albums of this year.
In the course of the conversation we spoke about the albums creation and how it was born from studio experiments with modular synths and electronica. We briefly touch on grief, about the almost prophetic nature of the creative process, and talk a little about Lee Scratch Perry and excellence of Kate Bush. Also I didn't mention it, but I saw the show recently at The Royal Albert Hall in London and it was incredible, if St Vincent is playing near you at any point in the future, its well worth seeing as theres an abandon to the live show that rules...
The album 'All Born Screaming' is out now and you should go listen to it on whichever platform you prefer or better yet buy a copy here.
Annie can be found online easily, but as a heads up her instagram is here and her website is here
On that front, my instagram is @danielpcarter and the podcast is @swimpodcast
I know this is the first episode of 2024 and follows on over a year later from the last one with Thomas from Meshuggah, but thats fine, I don't feel the need to bang these out on the regs and theres a ton of other rad pods you can check out like The Downbeat or Tetragrammaton
For those curious about the cover image I painted, the portrait of Annie is Oil, Acrylic and Ink on paper and for the record and this cover is a crop of it (the full image is on my instagram).
Thanks for listening.
Peace.

Episode 45 is with Tomas Haake of the Swedish band Meshuggah. This episode was recorded on the eve of the release of the bands latest album 'Immutable'. A fantastically beautiful, layered and crushing work of modern metal, that yet again proves them to be one of the most vital bands in the genre. Over the course of this conversation we discuss the writing and recording of the album during the pandemic, some of the dystopian themes covered in the lyrics, the idea that all great art has an ethereal nature that is hard to pinpoint, yet is easy to recognise when it resonates for some of us and also the hypnotic trancelike quality that I find the bands music to have. We also talk a little about the health issue Tomas has faced with a recurring hand injury as they were preparing to tour the album at the time of recording...
If you want to find out more about the band, the internet is right there.
They can be found online @meshuggah in most places, their instagram for example is here.
Daniel's social pages are @danielpcarter here on instagram and here on Twitter and the podcast is @SWIMPodcast here on Instagram and here on Twitter

As we are on the threshold of a new year and former HIM frontman Ville Valo is less than two weeks away from releasing his debut album under the moniker 'VV' called 'Neon Noir' (due Jan 13th Via Spinefarm / Universal) it seemed appropriate to release this show on new years eve 2022. Its been five years to the day since the Finnish singers former band HIM drew their last breath at their final show at Helsinkis Tavastia venue in 2017.
I recently met up with Ville whilst he was here in London and in the office of the label we discussed the recording of the album during lockdowns, where the singer / multi-instrumentalist played and sang everything on 'Neon Noir'.
We talk a little about his former band HIM and the creative process both then and now, especially under such solitary conditions that were imposed during the pandemic. We talk about the archetypal powers of love and death, Eros and Thanatos and their magickal conjunction as Thanateros and how they have been the basis and muse for the genre Love Metal, that Ville started with HIM and that the new 'VV' record is another layer and continuation of. We discuss the Heartagram, a sigil that 19 year Ville scribbled into popular culture and where it now resides somewhat beyond its original intention and meaning.
I hope you enjoy the conversation and the forthcoming VV record and as we move into 2023, try to do it with love and compassion and with a protective glow about you that repels all the bad shit of the last few years. Onwards!

In this episode with Erik Danielsson, frontman of Swedish black metal band Watain, we discuss the bands new album 'The Agony & Ecstasy Of Watain' which is due out April 29th on Nuclear Blast Records and can be pre ordered from various sites such as here. Along the way we talk about the albums recording, the nature and importance of transgressive art and those that walk the path outside of societies norms, the spiritual aspect of the band that is a foundational part of their work and the nature of the magickal entities known as Egregores.
Though Erik was recording the audio at his end via mic, due to a technical glitch, the last 5 minutes or so are from the recording of the call from my end as his recording cut out.
You can find the band online here or via their instagram account here
Daniel is here and the podcast is here
Please leave a nice 5 star review where you can for the podcast and subscribe on your preferred platform.
The painting of Erik that is the cover of this episode is Oil, Acrylic, Pencil and Prima Materia on paper. Approx 12" x 12"

On this episode, number 42, myself and Aaron Weaver discuss his band Wolves In The Throne Room's latest album 'Primordial Arcana' along with the spiritual mindset he, his brother Nathan and guitarist Kody Keyworth apply to making their art. Since the bands first release in 2006 (Diadem Of 12 Stars) WITTR have made incredibly atmospheric and magickal black metal in the Cascadian scene of Americas north west...
Very quickly we get into talking about the process of channelling art and music that rises as a current from the landscape they live within. We talk about rising through the Olympia Washington punk rock scene of the 90's, through to the recording of this newest record.
Its a great episode and Aaron is a very cool and erudite musician and it was a pleasure to finally get to talk with an artist who's work I have loved and supported on my radio show for many years.
The album is available now via Relapse Records / Century Media / Artemisia Records. Please go and listen now if you haven't already, it's really brilliant... Spotify link here
The band is here on Instagram.
All their tour dates and merch links can be found here on their official site.

On this episode, which take two of a conversation with singer, songwriter, musician Chelsea Wolfe, we discuss her music and the creative process and how that changes due to environment etc. We talk about the collaboration with Converge on the Blood Moon project, her band with Jess Gowrie called Mrs Piss and about her albums as Chelsea Wolfe. Its a rad episode and Chelsea is one of my favourite singers for the fact that her work is imbued with a very magickal current.
The first couple of tracks of Blood Moon have recently been released with the album due shortly and if you aren't familiar with all her solo work or through her many collaborations, please do yourself a favour and check it out ASAP. The last few that came out on Sargent House in particular, are records I can't recommend enough. So very good.

The podcast can be found here
And Daniel is here on IG.
The painting of Chelsea came out pretty rad and like all of the portraits for each episode, it is Oil, Acrylic and Ink on paper. If you want a print of it, punish me on my instagram and I'll consider adding it to my print collection on the Deathwish webstore here

My guest on this episode is Wade MacNeil wonderful human and musician known for his work not only in the bands Alexisonfire, Gallows, Black Lungs and his new endeavour Dooms Children, but also for his score work for various films and video games. We caught up recently to discuss the formation, dissolution and subsequent re-convening of Alexisonfire, a band that rose from Canada's sweaty bar room punk scene into full fledged Juno winning arena filling rock greatness. We talk about him becoming the singer for British punks Gallows, after the departure of frontman Frank Carter and we discuss the recent turbulent period in Wade's personal life that he overcame and led to the formation and recording of Dooms Children, a heavy psych folk project that see's him moving away (somewhat) from his punk rock roots. We also talk about the creative process and magick but that was always gonna happen wasn't it? Come on, you should know the score by now. If you don't then look back from some of the previous episodes are they're pretty rad, by and large.
The first track from the self titled debut album 'Flower Moon' can be seen here and heres the link for the bands profile page on Dine Alone Records
Wade can be found here on instagram and it will be the best place to keep up to date with all his many works.
Daniel can be found here and the podcasts instagram is here Follow either of those and I'll be overjoyed. Truly.
The portrait of wade is acrylic, oil and ink on paper and originally had a weird crying worm spirit rising from a crop of psychedelic mushrooms but I painted over it as it looked weird (as previously stated.)
If you listen on apple podcasts, please leave a nice review and comment as it'll take very little effort and will count as an act of kindness that'll go some way towards balancing out your karmic debt. Thanks.

My guest on this one is Craig Reynolds, drummer with the politically incendiary metal band Stray From The Path and host of the fantastic podcast The Downbeat.
This episode looked like it was going to be a slight departure from the usual heaviness of SWIM as Craig is a good mate and usually when we catch up we end up talking nonsense for a minute, however amongst a lot of laughing and weird tangents, we got into discussing some heavy topics that have affected Craig in recent years such as anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.
The portrait of Craig that I painted is oil, acrylic, coloured pencil and ink on paper. There may well be prints coming of this one. Keep an eye on both our socials:

On this episode I speak with Tom Delonge, frontman of Angels & Airwaves, founder of To The Stars Academy Of Arts & Science and former guitarist and singer of Blink 182. We discuss the new AVA single 'All Thats Left Is Love' and the making of the bands forthcoming album during the pandemic. We also discuss the work TTSA is doing with regard tobringing forward information and ideas that tie in with the phenomenon and its relationship to UAP's or as they are more commonly referred to as UFO's.
There is an edit two thirds of the way through that would have been too obvious to not draw attention to, so I put in a censor beep which is mad clickbait-y but thats cos I am a dick. There wasnt any huge secret going on that I covered up, its just we started down a route of conversation that we didn't have time to get into as he was due to take a call as soon as we finished. So, chill. He didn't tell me the secrets of the universe.

To mark the auspicious number 33, its very fitting that the guest on this episode is Grant Morrison MBE.
A true visionary and legend in the field of comics, Grant has created work for DC, Marvel, Image and more. He's written groundbreaking arcs on such legendary comics as Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, X-Men, Doom Patrol, Fantastic Four, Swamp Thing and Justice League. He is also the creator of 90's masterpiece 'The Invisibles', a book who's influence reaches far into popular culture and occulture. In this episode I talk to him about magick, life, comics, creativity and recent work in TV. Its a mind melter.

In this episode of Someone Who Isn't Me, I speak with Tobias Forge, creative mastermind, songwriter and frontman from the band Ghost.
We discuss the rise of the band to arena headliners, the bands journey, songwriting and creativity. Tobias tells how he struggles with the idea of people conflating him with the characters of Papa Emeritus and Cardinal Copia, the lead characters that have fronted the band through its career. He hints at creative endeavours elsewhere and how two events in his childhood have had a profound affect on the development and his creative vision, of what Ghost is.
At the point where we were about to discuss fatherhood as a touring musician, my recording equipment died as I was using my new Aston Stealth mics and was unsure of how much the phantom power would drain the recorders battery. So please forgive the abrupt finish!
The latest Ghost album 'Prequelle' has recently had the new 'Exalted' box set reissue and their UK tour recently finished.

This episode is a conversation with the singer and artist known as Poppy and her collaborator Titanic Sinclair. Having met the pair of them a few times now and having spent some time with them 'off duty' as it were, I feel its fair to say that this is one of the first interviews Poppy has done where she steps away from the persona that is this whole project and had an open discussion about some deeper stuff. We discuss life, the music industry, art, creativity and more. We also get into some of the wild conspiracy theories swirling around the fringes of the internet regarding them both. It was definitely something I wanted to talk about as I find that they have read the current climate of a new 'satanic panic' like that which swept the entertainment industry in the 80's, which has now been 'upgraded' to a weird modern 'Luciferian Illuminati Reptilian Panic' and as artists they are reacting to that and are playing their hand well, in a very artful, creative and knowing way.
Her forthcoming album 'I Disagree' is due for release on Sumerian Records in January 2020 and preorders are live now.
The title track and its accompanying video are online now.

I recently spoke with Perry when he was here in London for a couple of shows to launch his new album 'Kind Heaven'
We sat in his hotel the afternoon of the first of two shows the Kind Heaven Orchestra, featuring Perrys wife and co-vocalist Etty, played at The Box in Soho. It was unlike any gig I've been to, very intimate, interactive and inclusive. It was pretty wonderful to see.
During our conversation we discussed the new project, the interactive and immersive experience in Las Vegas, Janes Addiction, Travel, Music, Creativity, Politics and an event that happened in Perry's life that had a profound effect on him...
The album Kind Heaven is available to buy and is now on all streaming platforms.

In this episode I talk with NOFX frontman / songwriter Fat Mike about his incredible recent album as Cokie The Clown called You're Welcome (Fat Wreck Chords)
We started off by discussing the upcoming show that NOFX is playing in Portland (they've announced it now so I didn't need to bleep it out) with an orchestra 'The Decline' in full and then moved onto the Cokie record and little about his musical Home Street Home. We also talk a bit about Mike's love of BDSM and his line of womens clothing for men. All in all it was a very open and frank conversation.

In this episode I speak with Adam 'Nergal' Darski, front man and songwriter for Polish metal band Behemoth and alt country duo Me And That Man.
We recorded this on the eve of the release of the latest Behemoth album 'I Loved You At Your Darkest' and we discussed the writing, shaping and recording of the album. Aside from the song writing I also got into a discussion about the incredible artwork by acclaimed Italian painter Nicola Samori that was used for the albums cover and subsequent singles and how the intended art by the fantastic Russian occult artist Dennis Forkas Kostromitin, who previously worked with the band on several releases, including albums The Satanist, Messe Noire and the Xiadz EP, ended up being shelved for later usage.
