Stress between romantic partners can be one of the most difficult to process, especially when you’re living together. Relationship stress is hard to get away from, whether it’s the little, everyday annoyances, occasional arguments, or totally irreconcilable differences. Today’s guest, love and relationship expert Arielle Ford, says relationships don’t have to be stressful!
Arielle is the author of 11 best-selling books about love and relationships and has helped a multitude of women find the love they deserve. Not only that, she helps you learn how to manifest more love in your life and how to BE more love. Arielle is charismatic, welcoming, and an absolutely joyful personal friend of mine.
She agrees that we’re more likely to take out our daily stress on our partners - whether we mean to or not, they’re someone we feel comfortable with… and they’re always there. But there’s a healthy and an unhealthy way of unloading your stress, and Arielle explains how we can share better. Dealing with life’s stress is one thing, what happens when we’re feeling the stress from within our relationship?
The key is to recognize that no one in this world is perfect, and that includes your partner. Once you’ve come to this acceptance and reframed your responses, you’ll find you can more easily accept their small annoyances.
Arielle stresses that it’s completely normal to have up to 9 irreconcilable differences with your partner! These can be anything from how you organize your finances to what the best way to keep a clean house is. When you learn to accept these differences and look past them to the love you have for each other, you’ll start to see the stress melting away.
Arielle also shares some advice on how to improve the love between you and your partner. She shares some very personal stories that are sure to make you smile. She also encourages all women to become pleasure puppies and explore one thing every day that makes us feel special.
Do you take out your everyday stress on your partner? How do you approach differences in your relationship? What do you do to prioritize your pleasure every single day? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.
In This Episode:
How do we deal with the stress of relationships How you can be more loving with the people you love the most Why we take out our stress on the people we love Why you need to recognize that no one is perfect and what happens when you do How you can reframe your perception of your partner’s annoying behavior to one of love Why it’s perfectly normal to have at least 9 irreconcilable differences with your partner, and how to deal with them How to address money disparities in your relationship How to create space in your own life to allow your partner to be your hero Why you should never put yourself down in front of your partner How you can become a pleasure puppy and encourage daily pleasure How you can recognize and shift your reactions to negative situationsQuotes:
“Sometimes knowing the why is completely not useful. The one thing people don’t understand and know is what’s normal in a relationship.” (10:40)
“It just doesn’t do any good to be annoyed by it. I just take care of it.” (16:20)
“We get stressed out because we’re low on oxytocin. Our oxytocin tanks tend to bottom out. And when we have no oxytocin, we can’t manage stress. So I like to encourage women to become pleasure puppies.” (19:51)

Even the people who seem to have it all together can go through periods of life-impacting stress. In fact, these episodes can be so severe, that they don’t have any sense of what’s actually going on in their body. JJ Virgin is talking with me today about how she turned her life from stressful and messy to structured and serene.
JJ is my dear friend and mentor, someone who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for many years. She is a world-renowned, triple-board-certified health expert who helps people across the globe lose weight after 40.
We start this episode by talking about stress. JJ explains her early relationship with stress and how she used to mistake symptoms of anxiety with exercise-induced asthma.
Feeling like you have no control over your body is an extremely unnerving experience, especially when it’s ongoing. But JJ learned to manage her stress and offers a few practical tips and suggestions that helped her get things under control. A structured day was a huge help to JJ, as this let her schedule some time for herself - whether for exercise, personal errands, or just to stop and breathe.
JJ also shares with us her personal practice for helping shift stress in any given moment - something that is so valuable to learn. Perhaps most importantly, she tells us how mental health should be a priority in our everyday lives and that we should absolutely not feel guilty for taking some time for ourselves.
How do you calm down when you’re experiencing a stressful time in your life? Do you allow yourself some downtime every single day? What do you do to lead a less stressful existence?
In This Episode:
How you can mistake anxiety for other medical conditions, such as exercise-induced asthma What effect a complete lack of any sense of where you’re going has on your body How a controlled schedule and structured day can help you control stress Why you should consider investing in a coach and lifestyle community Why you need to schedule in some breathing space every single day How to not feel guilty for taking the time off that you need What the most important health practices are Why it’s so important to be authentically yourself for your mental healthQuotes:
“I do so much and accomplished so much because of the challenges that I’ve been through that have made me really develop my stress resilience muscle and my mindset around it.” (2:28)
“We all have these big dreams... but you have to take that big dream and go - alright, what’s the first step that I need to take?” (7:47)
“We’re never better than when we’re really fully expressing [ourselves] and we’re willing to share and be vulnerable. Because people will relate and say, oh my gosh, she’s just like me.” (18:49)

Are you feeling stuck in a stress mess, overwhelmed, and overstimulated by the demands of your life? Spread too thin and not prioritizing self-care because you feel like it’s selfish when so many other people need your help? Well, let’s stop for a moment.
How much can we really help others when we’re just scraping by, ourselves? At the end of the day, we’re only really worth as much as we can give, based on the energy we have in the time that we have.
I’m your host, Dr. Heidi Hanna, and in this stress mastery podcast, we’re talking to the experts to find out what they do to use stress as fuel for success and what they do to shift stress in a positive way when they notice it getting out of control.
Because we’re all human, we all get stuck sometimes and we can learn so much from each other when we take an honest look at the patterns that are hurting us and create new patterns that will help us.
So, let’s get ready to master stress together in today’s conversation!
Key Takeaways:
[1:08] Dr. Hanna welcomes listeners and introduces this week’s guest as well as some of her work – and their connection through a mutual friend: Dr. Debi Silber, holistic psychologist and health, mindset and personal development expert. She recently earned a Ph.D. with a study on how women experience betrayal, in addition to being on FOX, CBS, The Dr. Oz Show, TEDx and more, she’s an award-winning speaker, coach, and author.
[5:36] Life journeys often differ from expectation to reality, and to find oneself on a path you didn’t choose can get lonely.
[6:58] Dr. Hanna and Dr. Silber discuss the nature and impact of betrayal.
[9:04] Safety at all costs! How does the lack thereof manifest and how do we navigate out of it?
[11:20] Dr. Silber discusses Post Betrayal Syndrome and the ways our body tells us there is a need for it to heal and a need for us to learn!
[14:20] Debi talks us through the five proven and predictable stages from the initial shock to the Post Betrayal Transformation.
[18:20] Which steps are the hardest to transition from? Why?
[19:47] Dr. Hanna asks what Dr. Silber’s strategies are, when she experiences stress or betrayal, in order to get back to normal.
[21:40] Dr. Hanna asks Debi what her mantra is and they discuss Dr. Silber’s Post Betrayal Transformation betrayal program before wrapping up the show until next week.

Until next time, please remember that stressing is a blessing, once you know how to use it for good. It gives us the energy and information to fuel positive change if we’re brave enough to look into it, stay open and curious to what it has to teach us and then adjust our patterns in a way that will give us even more capacity to cope. And when we do that together, we increase the energy we have to bring to the time that we have and we’re better together. So please, be good to yourself, and I’ll see you next week.

Key Takeaways:

[2:27] Heidi explains how she met her dear friend Srini many years ago and mentions a few of her favorite books by him.
[4:52] Dr. Srini talked about the nature and benefits of mixed feelings — a combination of opposite or contradictory feelings.
[5:40] The conversation moves organically in an unplanned direction!
[6:20] Dr. Srini touches on the importance of authenticity versus “what we’re supposed to be” and what to do when there is a dissonance between our authentic self and what we think we should be or do.
[7:40] We discover that a few of our preconceived notions of perseverance and practice on success levels are actually not stand-alone indicators! And these erroneous notions cause people a lot of stress.
[11:20] Dr. Hanna asks what we can do to better our practices, if in fact perseverance and practice may not always help!
[15:55] Unless we actually put our hearts into them, a lot of stress can be generated by our deliberate practices because we may just be rewiring negative habits.
[16:50] Dr. Pillay tells the story of when he entered his residency at Harvard.
[18:00] What is alignment in terms of focused and unfocused periods?
[19:04] Dr. Hanna asks what are Dr. Pillay’s go-to strategy or strategies when he finds himself out of balance in some way.

[7:50] Intention, attention, no tension: the equation Yakov learned to use to manage stress, and the power of meditation to find some breathing space between your thoughts.
[11:05] Heidi asks if the challenges and high levels of stress Yakov faced in his life – namely growing up in the Soviet Union – were a catalyst in terms of developing a unique perspective and comedic outlook of life.
[12:07] Yakov describes how he drew inspiration from his parents to guide him to look for laughter, healthy laughter, in every relationship and recognize it for what it is, a barometer for love.
[15:02] Heidi and Yakov discuss LOL: The Law of Laughter – the doctoral dissertation that he is currently researching to obtain his Ph.D in Psychology – as well as some of the other research that has been led on laughter, and laughter yoga!
[21:37] Friendships and relationships are Yakov’s go-to stress busters: choosing the people that you will surround yourself with in moments of stress equals choosing laughter and joy.
[22:59] Make America Laugh Again, Yakov’s new show is all about laughing together not laughing at what’s wrong, not laughing at: we need to feel safe and playful and face our challenges more effectively.
[26:25] Yakov recounts anecdotes on his work with U.S. President Ronald Reagan during negotiations with Soviet Union’s General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, and the importance of humor in all aspects of human relationships.
[30:37] Dr. Hanna thanks her friend and guest and wraps up the show with a last question: what is your mantra?
