  • This week Kris Kristofferson passed away at 88. In addition to being one of country music's greatest songwriters, he was a movie stars, a political activist, and one of the most badass dudes to ever live. This week we revisit our 2022 episode about Kristofferson, with guest Zach Peterson.

Rest easy, Kris. Thanks for the tunes, the stories, and for John Prine.

  • We round out CONCEPTEMBER with one of the best concept albums of any genre (but especially country) of at least the last decade: A Sailor's Guide To Earth by Sturgill Simpson. The love/advice letter to his wife and firstborn son is an ambitious musical triumph that feels like country, soul, prog rock, and 70's Elvis all at the same time.

  • This week we go in a totally new direction: we discuss not a song, not an album, not even an artist, but a BOOK that was a gateway to country music. Of all things, it was the Reader's Digest Country and Western Songbook that helped this week's guest, comedian Zac Maas, discover his love of country music.

  • We're back! And for the month of September we are doing something special—a series of episodes about concept albums that we are calling CONCEPTEMBER! First we are digging one of Willie Nelson's best albums (if not his absolute best) which came out 50 years ago this year, Phases and Stages, a concept album about divorce and how both sides of the couple experience it differently.

2024 has arguably been one of the best years for new country music in quite a while. With acclaimed releases from favorites like Kacey Musgraves and Sturgill Simpson (er...I mean, Johnny Blue Skies), innovative LPs from rising stars like Willi Carlisle and Sierra Ferrell, country debuts from megastars Beyoncé and Post Malone, and killer releases from country's most prolific songwriters Zach Bryan and Charley Crockett, there's a lot for country fans to be excited about. There's also arguably too much to keep track of.

This week we dig into the best albums of 2024, so far. Let us know what you think—what's your favorite? What did we miss? What do we need to hear?

After blowing out his vocal chords and leaving much speculation about if or when he might ever return to music, Sturgill Simpson suddenly dropped a new album, Passage du Desir. This week Danny and Tyler talk about the new album, released as Sturgill's new alter ego Johnny Blue Skies, and discuss how Sturgill went on a globe-trotting quest to find himself, only to discover something totally new that's also satisfyingly familiar.

  • This week we revisit a favorite topic: insane, pandering, patriotic country songs. Originally aired on July 4th 2022, this episode features comedian Joe Mande (Hacks, The Good Place, Parks and Recreation), who joins us in going down the un-nuanced rabbit hole of unabashedly pro-America country music.

This episode has been remixed and remastered to improve sound quality and include new song clips for context.

This week we're a day late (and probably a dollar short too), and so discussing the ramblin', hard-workin', hard-timin' Charley Crockett seems to make a lot of sense. Crockett is one of the most prolific and beloved artists currently working in the folk/country/Americana/etc. world, and though narrowing down a song was hard, we landed adding his soulful, funky, swampy ditty "I'm Just a Clown" to our Ultimate Country Playlist.
