We often think of rest as optional—a luxury we’ll get to after we’ve finished everything. But what if rest isn’t the reward after performance… but the foundation of it?
In this solo episode, Kate Kayaian explores what elite performers across industries know: rest is a high-performance strategy. From micro-tears in your muscles to memory consolidation in your brain, rest is where the real growth happens. Featuring neuroscience research, data-backed insights, and examples from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Simone Biles, and Whitney Wolfe Herd, this episode invites you to rethink your relationship with rest—and to make it part of your pursuit of excellence, not the thing that gets in its way.
You’ll learn:
Why rest is essential for top-tier performance (not just nice to have)
What neuroscience tells us about rest and learning
How CEOs, athletes, and artists protect recovery time

Hello, friend, and welcome back to another episode of Tales from The Lane. I’m your host, Kate Kayaian—a former cellist, now writer, speaker, and coach for high performers who want their lives to feel as good on the inside as they look from the outside.
In this episode, we’re talking about something that rarely gets acknowledged in the world of high achievement: the hidden costs of excellence.
Not because we’re lowering the bar. Not because we’re changing the goal.
But because when you’re committed to being the best, you deserve to make those trade-offs with clarity and intention—not by default. We’ll explore real-life examples of world-class professionals (like Arianna Huffington) who hit a wall, and how they learned to succeed without self-sacrifice becoming the default setting. We’ll also talk about how to navigate your own trade-offs more deliberately—and how to protect the things that matter most while staying on track toward the top of your game.
If excellence is non-negotiable for you, but you want to pursue it without burning down the rest of your life, this episode is for you.
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is this really worth it?”—this episode is for you.
Key Takeaways:What we lose in the pursuit of excellence—and why it’s so rarely talked about
Real-life stories of high performers who chose health and wholeness over external achievement
How to recognize burnout, disconnection, and over-identification with your work
Tools to help you recalibrate your career for long-term, sustainable success

As the year comes to a close, I’m taking some time to reflect on a year full of growth, change, and meaningful experiences. In this penultimate episode of Season 1, I walk you through the ten life lessons I’ve learned in 2024. Some were joyful discoveries, while others came from hard-fought battles, but all of them shaped me and helped me move forward with clarity and purpose.
🎯 Key Takeaways from the Episode:
Figure out what’s holding you back and find a solution. (Hint: sometimes, it’s okay to outsource!) Trust your gut. If something feels off, honor that feeling. Community is everything. Lean into it, even when you’re a "lone wolf." Friendships require effort, but the rewards are huge. Make time for your people. The second time is easier. Use experience to lighten your load. Find the balance between planning and spontaneity. It’s okay to mix structure and exploration. Interesting experiences trump comfort. You’ll remember the adventure, not the missed nap. Harsh criticism can be a gift. Listen, learn, and grow. It’s okay to pivot. Don’t let sunk costs trap you. Challenge old stories. You’re capable of more than you think.I hope these lessons resonate with you and inspire you as you head into a new year. What lessons have you learned this year? Share them with me—I’d love to hear from you!
