  • On this weekā€™s episode of The BibRave Podcast we welcome the absolutely incomparable Courtney Dauwalter to the show! Courtney is most famous for winning races OUTRIGHT (in one case beating the fastest male in a 240-mile race by 10 hours šŸ‘€), setting course records, and winning some of the highest-profile trail races in the world (Western States, UTMB).

Before we jump into Tim and Jessā€™s convo with Courtney, did you know that The BibRave 100 nomination period has officially opened? šŸŽ‰ Nominate your favorite races from the last decade - only the best of the best will make the list!

Tim, Jess, and Courtney talk about what keeps Courtney going farther, always pushing to see what her body can do, and rarely worrying about winning or competition for competitionā€™s sake. They talk about identifying good pain versus bad pain (as part of a story of when she lost her sight mid-race!), what she wishes for the trail running industry and sport, and obviously some fun food and personal stories.

  • We bring you a conversation with Tim, Jess, and Andy. To launch Pride Month, the trio takes time to reflect internally as a team on recent events and issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

To kick things off, Tim, Jess, and Andy talk about the recent protests, and how issues for racial minorities intersect with issues in the LGBTQ+ community. Through an exploration of the history of Pride, they discuss how American legislation has built-in systemic racism and prejudice into our country with some specific examples. Andy and Jessica then share some personal stories of how implicit bias and microaggressions result. The episode is an opportunity to listen, learn, and is a call-to-action for continued education on the history of these issues.

  • We bring you a conversation with Tim, Jess, and Andy about unexpected life lessons. Running has taught them a lot about life, but so have a couple of other fun life events. We all can learn from many different sources and apply those lessons to running as well.

The trio goes around and shares some unexpected life lessons theyā€™ve pulled from new and interesting places. Tim kicks it off by discussing what Call of Duty has taught him about playing the game heā€™s in, teamwork, and strategy. Andy shares how his life and career in theatre has taught him how to trust the process and to flex many different muscles in his role. And Jess discusses how getting a tattoo taught her to remove preconceived expectations and labels, stop waiting for the perfect moment, and surround herself with a great support system.

  • We bring you a special conversation about race, diversity, equity, and inclusion between Tim, Jess, and Ted Metellus from New York Road Runners. You may remember Ted from Episode 74 when he shared background and insight on the quick and amazing work that was done to re-work the course of Rock ā€˜nā€™ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in 2017 so the race could take place just a few weeks after the Las Vegas shootings. His knowledge and experience in the industry is unparalleled, and we enjoy diving deeper with him in this conversation.

The conversation starts with a chat about Tedā€™s experience growing up in the Bronx and then going to college where he became the OBG - Only Black Guy - in the room. We fast forward to how that has translated to his 20 or so years of experience in the running industry often being the OBG and traveling all over the country to host events in different markets. They talk about ā€œsignalingā€ and ā€œtokenism,ā€ and specifically discuss steps the white community can take to affect change.

  • On this weekā€™s episode of The BibRave Podcast, Tim & Jess talk to Tony Yamanaka, Vice President of Operations for Event Southwest, a boutique event production company. They then chat about the running industry and why runners run. Basically, prepare to nerd out.

Tony graduated from the University of Edinburgh where he wrote a dissertation about ā€œLong-Distance Running Races: The Use of Experiences as Self-Concept Constructs.ā€ The trio dissects what that actually means - specifically why runners run - and his approach to his research. A lot of the discussion centers around this idea of experience, and since we are all in lockdown our concept of experience is changing all the time. They also share some insider tips on how to get into the industry and tales of some international travels.
