  • It’s the 20th anniversary of the release of modern classic House of Flying Daggers, so Another Bite of the Cherry and The Mockingbird Cinema felt it would be appropriate to put on a screening of said film. To celebrate this, we thought we’d talk about martial arts films this week!

Our resident martial arts expert Nadine, a fearsome fighter with a red AND white belt in karate, will be taking us on a journey through the history of the genre, from obscure art house flicks to Kung Fu Panda.

We’ll also be reviewing some new releases including Clint Eastwood’s latest film Juror #2, wherein Nicholas Hoult fights his conscience and the American judicial system. Which discipline of martial arts will he be deploying in the courtroom? Tune in to find out!

We’ll be discussing our favourite true crime inspired films, society’s obsession with grisly murders, and Hollywood’s history of turning tragedy into entertainment.

Alongside a disproportionate number of references to Mark Ruffalo, we’ll also be reviewing Netflix’s latest true crime inspired thriller Woman of the Hour, so this is set to be an episode to die for!

  • It’s the 25th episode of The Brum Picture Show! We thought we’d celebrate this momentous occasion by not mentioning the recently released Joker: Folie à Deux, not even in passing.

We will however be discussing our favourite Anti-heroes in films, the morally dubious protagonists of the big screen who we love to hate, or hate to love.

We’ll be discussing the psychology of why we’re enamoured by ethically questionable characters, and whether or not Despicable Me constitutes high art.

We’ll also be debuting our new pioneering rating system, the “Brums Up”, to mark this milestone episode. We’ll be implementing said system during our reviews of Strange Darling, The Substance, and Megalopolis, so this episode is set to be Megalols!

  • The spooky season is on its way, so on this week’s show we thought we’d talk about everyone’s favourite frizzy-haired Disney animator turned goth poster-boy, Tim Burton.

We’ll be discussing films from his illustrious career, from the nightmarish in a good way to the nightmarish in a bad way (we’re looking at you Alice in Wonderland).

Alongside our usual movie news and reviews, we’ll also be performing a bit of dark magic in order to summon the elusive Brum Picture Show presenter Rory, so this is sure to be a hair-raising episode indeed!

  • Screen B14 and The Mockingbird Cinema are teaming up again to screen Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, so we thought we’d discuss its director this week. That’s right, it’s Hollywood’s favourite controversial Uncle, Paul Schrader!

Whilst perhaps most famous for bringing the world Taxi Driver and American Gigolo, he has had a prolific career which we’ll be shining a spotlight on this week, ranging from sublime films to ridiculous ones.

We’ll also be discussing his no-nonsense forays into online film criticism, so if you’ve ever wondered what Uncle Paul thinks of 2012’s Rock of Ages, be sure to tune in!

  • In space, no one can hear Nadine and Paul discuss the Alien franchise in excruciating detail. But on Brum radio, everyone can! In this very special bumper episode, we’ll be taking a deep-dive into one of the most beloved yet divisive franchises of all time.

We’ll be discussing problematic pre-productions, difficult directors, and confusing chronologies in an episode with a galaxy of fascinating factoids and controversial opinions to delight or enrage you depending on your point of view.

This isn’t just one for the nerds though, as we’ll also be talking about more terrestrial matters such as Jake Gyllenhaal’s shorts. So even if you don’t know your xenomorphs from your facehuggers, this episode will have something for you!

  • With the release of The Watched, directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night, we thought we’d take a look at nepotism in the movie world this week.

We’ll be getting all serious for once and discussing why the prevalence of Nepo babies in Hollywood is such a problem for those from a less privileged background trying to break into the industry.

But don’t worry, we’ll also have our usual frivolity, as we rank our favourite Nepo babies, and even expose secret ones! We also have an oddly animal based news section, including a heart-warming tale about a movie donkey. Is there such a thing as a Nepo donkey? Tune in to find out.

  • To celebrate the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this week we’ll be having a battle of the Sci-Fi franchises on the Brum Picture Show!

We’ll be discussing our favourite futuristic sagas, what a franchise actually is, and if the very existence of franchises represents the death of originality in popular culture.

We’ll also be attempting to break the world record for the number of times the word “ape” is uttered in a podcast, so don’t monkey around, be sure to tune in!

  • To celebrate the release of Alex Garland’s new film Civil War, we thought it would be appropriate to discuss civil war films on this week’s show. This unfortunately turned into a civil war amongst the Brum Picture Show team as we debated whether civil war films are a genre, and what a civil war actually is.

Alongside deep dives into Apocalypse Now, Michael Collins, and A Field in England, we'll also be pitting the spookily similar nun-based horror films Immaculate and The First Omen against each other in an entirely different kind of conflict, a battle of the nuns.

To celebrate Screen B14 and Blow Water’s screening of the 1997 romantic comedy Peggy Su, we’ll be talking to executive producer Roger Shannon, a veteran of British independent cinema.

Roger was kind enough to take the time to talk to us about a range of topics including the production of Peggy Su, the representation of cities on film, and even Isaac Hayes’s boxer shorts. How on earth did the conversation lead to that last subject? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Recorded live on location at Blow Water Cafe in King’s Heath, complete with authentic background noise.
