  • Online influencers praise and sell their health hacks to vulnerable individuals. They prey on people’s fears and create problems in order to sell them the solution. Although biohacks seem sexy, their impact on long term health are eclipsed by the actual impact of proper lifestyle choices.

Nutrition, exercise, sleep, social connections and stress management may not be as sexy as cold plunges, but they’re exponentially more important.

  • People often use the slogan « Everything in Moderation » to either justify unhealthy habits, or to fear monger others. One of my patients was scared of the radiation from a mammogram, while walking around with an LDL-C of 5.2.

She refused breast cancer screening when 1/8 women will get diagnosed and also minimized her very high blood cholesterol levels, unknowingly living with a very high risk of cardiovascular disease, our world’s top killer.

While the scientific literature is quite clear, people online are confused.

  • Have you ever heard of turmeric, the golden yellow spice that supposedly has many health claims, like accelerated healing, treating inflammation and reversing auto-immune conditions? Is this hype or evidence based? Since it costs pennies per day, it probably isn’t a marketing scam, because there’s no profit margin in selling spices.

Spices are perfectly suited to get studied in double blind, randomized and placebo controlled trials. They fit neatly into capsules and can be tested against inactive placebos easily. Turmeric (and its potent pigment curcumin) is one of the most studied spices ever.

What does the science say about it?

  • The vast majority of us aren't born plant-based. Something triggered an AHA moment for some, while for others, it was a long and reflected journey.

Even after transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, we still end up making up less than a few percent of the population. Estimates suggest that 7-8% of Canadians are vegetarian and a much lower percentage of them are vegan. Having been a meat eater for most of my life, I can still relate to the thought processes and cognitive dissonance that would create resistance for anyone thinking of making a transition towards plant-predominance. I've been a plant-based advocate for almost a decade, and my transition towards a plant-exclusive diet was, in my opinion, quick, having transitioned fully in about 18 months. « Plant-based » is an umbrella term, including all forms of vegetarianism, veganism and flexitarianism (a term used to describe people who eat a plant-predominant diet, but do include small amounts of animal products). When people tell me: « I could never stop eating meat », I reply: « You don’t have to ». Never let being perfect get in the way of being better.

    My Personal Journey

Lifestyle change can be motivated by intrinsic factors, or extrinsic ones. Acquiring new habits must align with one's beliefs and core values. It has to be who you want to be. I wanted to be healthy, and after having went through a few medical scares, I recognized that my nutrition had to change. This intrinsic motivation was enough for me. I saw my daughters suffer from the same health issues that had plagued me and the pain I felt while witnessing this far surpassed the friction that a lifestyle overhaul would cause. This highly motivated me to change with a sense of urgency. Within 18 months, I had transitioned fully and the rest of my family soon followed. Would I have changed if my health challenges hadn't arose? Would I have spontaneously stumbled across the scientific data backing the whole food plant-based diet if I hadn't been searching for it? And if so, would I've been as receptive to hearing what the science had to say?

  • Over the last decade, there's been a steady rise in the availability and popularity of plant-based meats. But are they really healthier than what they're trying to replace? Are they better for the environment? Are they worth considering or adding to your plate? Do I feed them to my kids? In this article, I'll break down what they are, how they're made and what nutrients they contain, including the good and the bad. We'll also see how they measure up to their meat counterparts.
    THE RISE OF PLANT-BASED MEATS

Due to increases in demand, plant-based meat substitutes have gained quite the following. Social media has helped spread a message of environmental suffering and has also shone a light on the steady rise in chronic diseases linked to excessive meat consumption. Lots of people are trying to cut back on red and processed meats, which is a good plan since they've officially been classified as carcinogens. Although they've been around for a while, fake-meat products have gained lots of popularity thanks to this increased awareness about the not so sexy side of meat, as well as some great marketing tactics, including celebrity endorsements. But what about the scientific data surrounding these trendy meat replacements? Considered to be processed foods, are they as bad as other ultra refined, yet highly palatable foods?

  • This one says to eat according to your blood type, while that one recommends eating like cavemen. In 2013, the Paleo diet was the most googled diet out there. Did anyone tell the Paleos that cavemen barely lived to thirty? What about the keto diet? That one regained popularity in 2016. Why would we want to avoid fruits, grains and beans when they’re among the foods most associated with health and longevity? You probably know someone who had great results with keto, but is it just me, or is it slightly suspicious telling people to avoid well studied health foods while doubling down on bacon and red meat, which are confirmed class 1 carcinogens?

Never has a weight loss diet created so much controversy and division. The ketogenic diet has been referred to as the best diet for health and weight loss, and has been also called a dietary disaster waiting to happen. Who should we believe?

  • Have you ever experienced bloating, abdominal cramping, pain or distention? Do you consider yourself sensitive or intolerant to certain foods? Do you avoid eating foods that you know are healthy, simply because they cause abdominal symptoms that aren't worth the discomfort?

You could be suffering from IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, and some of the foods you're avoiding may be the solution, not the problem.

Although IBS doesn't affect life expectancy, surveys have shown that people affected by the condition would give up 25% of their remaining lives in exchange for a permanent cure. This is proof that this condition is relentless and reeks havoc on people's quality of life.

IBS is a disorder of the GI tract characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. In North America, approximately 10-15% of people fit the criteria for the diagnosis, although we know that up to half of the people with compatible gastrointestinal symptoms will remained undiagnosed. People affected by this disorder will often self-treat, meaning that they'll purposely avoid certain triggers or describe themselves as being intolerant or allergic to certain foods, not realizing that the avoidance of some of these foods might actually be contributing to their symptoms or making them worst.

Durant cet episode, je discuterai de comment la nutrition et vos habitudes de vie peuvent impacter de façon significative les chances d’être aux prises avec l’un de ces grands tueurs.

  • No single food has been as glorified or as vilified as coconuts and all its variations.

What to make of whole coconuts, coconut water, coconut milk or coconut oil? Some swear by their mystical healing powers, while others avoid it like the plague. Who to believe? Are coconuts healthy? Let’s examine coconuts through scientific lenses and analyze the nutrients in whole coconuts, coconut milk and coconut oil and I'll try to get to the bottom of this superfood mystery. As a personal disclaimer, I like coconuts. Although I don’t consume them often, I do enjoy them occasionally as a whole food, and I enjoy the occasional coconut milk chickpea curry and have been known to eat coconut based ice cream here and there, although very rarely, but not because I’m scared of them. I have simply found healthier alternatives that make coconuts unnecessary in my routine.

  • For generations, we've known that plant-based dietary patterns were more ethical. Then we started to notice how our food system was harming the environment and using finite resources irresponsibly. Now, thanks to over 20 000 studies getting published on plant-based nutrition in 2021 alone, we have a much clearer understanding of how adopting a plant-predominant dietary pattern can impact health, both positively and even negatively, if not well planned.

Plant-based diets have gained popularity for the many positive impacts they have on various health outcomes. They're shown to be associated with lower all-cause mortality and to have protective properties when looking at some of our top killers, like heart disease and cancer. The term "plant-based" has quickly become associated with perceptions of health. Soon enough, plant-based labels started to decorate highly processed and unhealthy foods, a clever marketing attempt for those trying to take advantage of the plant-based health halo, further confusing the uneducated consumer.

By itself, the term "plant-based" isn't always synonymous with health. Rather, it should be seen for what it is, an umbrella term used to describe a "plant-forward" type of dietary pattern that can include anything from flexitarianism to veganism. Considering the wide variety of healthy dietary patterns, plant-based diets could appear on either side of the spectrum. Ultra-processed foods with added sugar, fat and sodium can be called plant-based too and aren't always health promoting. So from now on, when I use the term "plant-based diet" and associating it with health, I'll be referring to a whole food plant-based diet that minimizes animal products and ultra-processed foods.

  • I assume you've heard the age old saying that red wine is great for your heart. Some would even go as far as saying that some types of alcohol are useful for many other health conditions. Have we been down-playing the risks of consuming alcohol? Have you ever used it to relax and unwind, or to treat insomnia, anxiety or social phobia? Do you drink because you think it’s good for your heart or because it’s healthy?

I don't want to sound like a party pooper, since I too like a good scotch here and there, but that doesn't mean we should avoid talking about the health implications. I get it, alcohol is an intricate part of our culture, and Acadian Canadians like me have been known to do their fair share of binge drinking.

In many parts of the world, doctors are still recommending alcohol for sleep, anxiety, pain management and even during pregnancy. I'm not one to rain on anyone's parade, but people love hearing good news about their bad habits. So I'm not surprised that people would jump for joy after hearing that alcohol is healthy. If you drink red wine because you love it, then you're an adult and you can decide for yourself, but if you do it for cardiovascular protection or any other medical reason, then you might be surprised to hear what I have to say. In this article, I'll review the pros and cons of alcohol consumption and I'll summarize the latest research on this highly popular beverage.

  • We've always been told that milk helps you grow up to become strong and healthy, yet when we study the longest living and healthiest populations on the planet, we quickly notice that most don't consume the milk of other species.

Does milk really "do a body good"? What about all the celebrities showing off their milk mustaches? Is the dairy industry simply a marketing genius? What are the odds of us having been duped by huge dairy corporations? Could it be a coincidence that the government of Canada officially removed the dairy food group from the Canadian food guide in 2019?

Does milk really help build strong bones? That's the message we've been told since our childhood. We associate milk with calcium, with strong bones and teeth and with health in general. Is this true? Would we all be frail and weak without cow's milk? Why is it normal to drink cow's milk, but not dog or cat's milk, or even moose milk, considering it actually contains way more calcium? That's a question I've asked myself for a long time, and in my simple human brain, there was always something very weird about drinking the milk of another lactating species. In this article, I'll review the nutrient content of milk, how it's made along with the process and necessary steps from the farm to your fridge.

  • After 15 years of medical practice and thousands of questions regarding nutrition, this is my favorite one: "is soy healthy?". Why did soy get such a bad reputation? Why do some actual real life medical doctors discourage their patients from consuming soy?

In this episode, I'll summarize findings from a massive undertaking where international scientists and researchers came together and reviewed hundreds of trials and finally came to a scientific consensus about soy. I'll also answer all of your burning questions about soy, including:

is soy linked to cancer?is soy adequate for children?does soy consumption in men lead to "man-boobs"?does soy affect thyroid function?

  • High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a major risk factor for our first killer worldwide, cardiovascular disease. Although no one is pretending that eating a stalk of celery will impact blood pressure the same way that pharmacologic doses of medication would, it’s important to recognize that small impacts add up.

For those who have only minimal increases in BP, certain specific nutrients have been shown to have significant impact on BP. For others who may have higher elevations, certain dietary patterns could also significantly improve BP control.

If you’re thinking of making changes to your diet or lifestyle, please talk to your doctor to make sure your BP doesn’t get too low.

  • The paleo diet gets a lot of things right. It tells you to ditch candy bars, doughnuts and processed junk. That's where we can agree. But here's where we don't. "Eat like a caveman" is the premise of this dietary pattern. I'm sure our paleo ancestors were the picture of health, considering the average life expectancy was less than 30 years. Cavemen didn't even survive long enough to suffer from chronic disease. So why are we promoting this diet and telling people it prevents them?

  • I personally enjoy drinking kombucha! It contains beneficial bacteria, yeast, organic acids, vitamins and polyphenols.

Although this drink is a type of carbonated tea that has been consumed around the world for thousands of years, it seems to have made quite a comeback lately and people are promoting it as the next big miracle cure for everything from gut health to mental health. Is there any proof to the hype? Is kombucha a magic probiotic potion that will be your fountain of youth? What about reports of liver toxicity and of this tea turning your blood to acid? There have been case reports of deaths linked to kombucha consumption. Let’s review what kombucha is, what it contains, and how it affects your body.

  • If I've asked myself this question, I might assume someone else has too. Do fruits and veggies lose nutrients when frozen? Is the fresh version healthier? Often, I fail to eat all the produce I've bought. I honestly despise throwing away food but when I see that weird fuzzy fungi stuff growing on my strawberries, I know I have no choice. Sounds familiar?
