  • Join us as we continue our in depth discussion and analysis of the 1995 psychological crime thriller Se7en.

Trigger Warning: besides the usual (murder, gore etc), slight discussion of violent sexual content and be aware Kevin Spacey was also in the film

    Directed by: David Fincher

Starring: Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt

After a brief much needed break we are back with a new theme for April - psychological thrillers. We’re starting with a heavy hitter, Fincher’s 1995 classic Se7en. The acting/dialogue does suffer from the overly dramatic trend of the ‘90s but over all the film still holds up. Also the cinematography is gorgeous and there's some epic makeup/prosthetics.

  • Join us as we continue our in depth discussion and analysis of the 1992 horror comedy Leprechaun.

    Directed by: Mark Jones

Starring: Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston

Editor’s Note: Full list of Leprechaun sequels in order of release date: Leprechaun 2, Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun 4: In Space, Leprechaun 5: In the Hood, Leprechaun 6: Back 2 The Hood, Leprechaun: Origins, and Leprechaun Returns. Warwick Davis stars in all except Origins and Returns. Davis portrays Professor Flitwick and Griphook the goblin in the Harry Potter franchise and several Star Wars characters including Wicket the Ewok (the one that first befriends Leia).

For our special St. Patrick’s weekend episode we watched the only logical choice: 1992’s Leprechaun. Silly, campy, and not very scary - it’s a fun watch but maybe not a rewatch.

  • Join us as we continue our in depth discussion and analysis of the 2015 Irish folk horror film The Hallow.

    Directed by: Corin Hardy

Starring: Joseph Mawle and Bojana Novakovic

Editor’s Note: Apologies for my [Ash] clunky audio this week - apparently my mic wasn’t working and I had to crank the other mics way up to make it work.

For our second Irish-Folklore-Medley theme film we watched 2015’s The Hallow. You will see the similarities between this and The Last of Us - the first game came out just 2 years before this movie. However, the film mixes this new sci-fi with old school folklore making the story unique. Despite a few instances of obvious CGI this movie is definitely worth the watch - but be wary if you have a hard time with body horror.

  • Join us as we continue our in depth discussion and analysis of the 2015 dark fantasy film: Tale of Tales.

    Directed by: Matteo Garrone

Starring: Salma Hayek & Vincent Cassel

We start out our hard to explain theme for March this week: fairy tales and folklore but also a special St. Patrick’s day episode in a couple weeks (guess which one that is, lol). Tale of Tales is the only English language film by Italian director Matteo Garrone and based on a 3 of a collection of 17th century fairy tale poems. This dark fantasy film tips into the horror genre slightly but with a low scare-o-meter rating - safe for horror newbies.

Out vampire theme has come back around - because there’s just too many good ones for only one month. We’re starting off with not your typical vampire film - Underworld. Although this is definitely an action movie, the plot revolves around feuding vampires and lycans (werewolves) so we’re counting it as horror also. It’s a nostalgic favourite of our with some fabulous practical special effects and great acting performances - shout out to Michael Sheen as Lucien.

  • Join us as we finish up our in depth discussion and analysis of the 2018 supernatural historical fiction drama The Terror.

    Directed by: Tim Mielants

Starring: Jared Harris, Adam Nagaitis, Paul Ready, and Nive Nielsen

For the month of January we have been covering the full first season of this anthology series. This week we finish up the season with episodes 9 & 10. Based on the book of the same name by Dan Simmons, The Terror follows the 1845 Franklin Expedition in their search for the Northwest Passage. Choices are made and not long into their journey both ships become trapped in the Arctic ice. Along with the many practical challenges of being stranded, the crew soon discover the polar bear pursuing them is more sinister than it seems.

    Scare-O-Meter (for episodes 9 & 10)
    Tasha - 6 out of 10
    Julia - 6 out of 10

Scare-O-Meter (for the series as a whole)
    Tasha - 5 out of 10
    Julia - 5 out of 10

    Jack-O-Lanterns
5 out of 5s across the board

Consensus: This episode runs a little longer for us than usual because SO much is packed into these last two episodes. We finally get an understanding out what tuunbaq is and find out the fates of each member of the expedition crew.
This series is a perfect match for the cold month of January. And though it is spooky, it's definitely safe for horror newbies as well.
