âWe talk about âthrowing something awayâ, but there is no âawayâ. There is only here.â
- Michael Kennard.
In this episode we speak with inspiring grassroots ChangeMaker Michael Kennard, founder of community composting business Compost Club, based in the Brighton and Lewes area of East Sussex, UK.
Compost Club is a social enterprise with a focus on soil regeneration, food waste emissions reduction and education. Their mission is to introduce as many people as possible to the world of composting and the many benefits it brings to our soil, air quality and water systems.
Michael comes from humble beginnings and has always been interested in the environment - his mum called him her âlittle eco-warriorâ. Michael has been very open about his struggles with anxiety, and after years of feeling like he was sleepwalking through life, he went through what he describes as a âspiritual awakeningâ that revealed to him how everything is interconnected. This helped him reconnect to the natural world, rediscovering his passion for soil health and stewarding natural processes to bring about change.
As well as talking about Compost Club, we discuss themes of microbiology, spirituality, and education, weaving the connective tissue of life below, upon, and above our earth through the essentialness of good, healthy soil.

âTHIS GOOD EARTH is a film that offers answers to how change can happen, and points the finger at those standing in the way. It is vital for young people in particular to look into their future.â
-Robert Golden
The Human Hive Podcast is a podcast for Changemakers. We define a Changemaker as a person or organisation actively striving to be the difference WITH, not FOR others - which means they work inclusively and collaboratively to solve collective problems that regenerate People, Place, and Planet.
In this episode we interview changemaker Robert Golden, director and producer of brilliant farming and climate change documentary THIS GOOD EARTH.
THIS GOOD EARTH is a beautiful, emotional film providing a view of the destruction wrought by the globalised farming system of landscapes, animal and plant species. It talks of the trap farmers are caught in and the life threatening use of man-made fertilizers, toxins and huge soil crushing machinery. It explains the relationship between the long food chain of corporate power, political failures with the resulting rise of obesity, non-communicative diseases, poverty, early deaths, and the denial of basic human rights. And ultimately resulting in the global climate crisis. Itâs a hard-hitting film, but also offers hope and possible solutions from a wide range of minds, including bakers, farmers, doctors, scientists, health officials and leading experts on food security, human rights and justice.
About Robert Golden
Robert Golden is an internationally known photographer and documentary film-maker.
In the 80âs and 90âs he was one of the most recognised and successful food and still-life photographers in the world and worked as director and director of photography on 900 television food commercials and two award winning feature films.
From 1999 to 2005, he created two successful television series: Savouring the World and Savouring Europe. These films are good-time stories looking at the food and culture of 26 different regions around the world.
He has since made 50 documentaries. His research into food production, his personal love of food and his care for those who work so hard to produce it, led him to make a second film focused on his home region of West Dorset - THIS GOOD EARTH.

âThereâs a real element of humility in creating partnerships. There has to be a willingness to hand over controlâ -Tina Ellen Lee
The Human Hive podcast focuses on change making. And one great way we believe we can make lasting change for people and the planet is through the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
However, achieving these vital goals by 2030 will be very difficult alone. That's why partnerships, no matter how big or small, are so important for making lasting positive change for People, Places, and Planet.
This episode focuses on the theme of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals; the aim of which is to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
During this episode we will hear from special guest Tina Ellen Lee FRSA, Artistic Director of UK based Opera Circus and producer of performing arts projects, youth and community programmes and documentary films.
We also find out how Matilda, a student at The Hive in the Dominican Republic, used partnerships to upcycle second-hand clothing and keep clothes out of landfill.

âArts & Culture should never be diminished because of the way it can bring people together, the way it can empower other people, and the way it can spark that dialogue.â Shaniqua Benjamin
The Human Hive podcast focuses on change making. And one great way we believe we can make lasting change for people and planet is through the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
However, we believe there is one SDG missing⊠Arts and Culture.
Arts and Culture is an incredibly important way for us to facilitate change, both in our own lives and the world around us.
Art brings different people together, enriches our lives, allows means of personal expression, and gives people purpose. And culture weaves itself through every aspect of our lives, helping us to appreciate each other and our diversity.
Join us for our very first takeover episode, hosted by Shaniqua Benjamin, poet, writer, creative workshop facilitator, and Croydonâs first Poet Laureate. She will talk about how Arts & Culture impact society and how they can enhance and complement the SDGs.

Welcome to the second episode of the Human Hive podcast, where we're exploring the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Quality Education.
Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been established by the United Nations, and are humanityâs collective call-to-action to solve the most pressing problems facing people and the planet today.
In this episode we're joined by Dr Ian Cunningham (a pioneer in the field of self-managed learning), young people from our flagship Hive School in the Dominican Republic, and members of our Human Hive global community, to explore what quality education truly means and how we can make a difference for achieving this vital SDG.
Dr Ian Cunningham is the founder of the Self Managed Learning College in Brighton, a unique organisation that supports young people aged 9-16 in managing their own learning. The College provides a learning community that enables young people to learn to lead a good life. There are no classrooms, no formal lessons, no imposed timetables and freedom for young people to learn whatever they want and in any way that they want.

What can you look forward to hearing in this episode?
"A good education is one where it doesn't necessarily have to be the same for everyone." - Tepenga (Hive School student, age 11)
" At the moment, the mainstream education system require students to cram for stressful high stakes examinations, which many of them fail. And even those who pass quickly forget the vast majority of the curriculum. Once you leave school there isn't usually a teacher there to tell you what to do, when, how and so on... So to me, quality education is one which teaches people how to teach themselves - how to be confident, effective, self-directed learners." - Dr James Mannion (Director of Rethinking Education)
