We have moved our focus from England to the English colonies but we are still looking at Particular Baptist beginnings in the 1600s. Now it would be easy to assume that the religious environment was the same in both Old England and the New World, but that would be a mistake. Since each colonial settlement was established on separate terms and with a different mix of leaders and settlers, their religious situations varied. That meant that Particular Baptists faced differing challenges and opportunities depending on where they settled.

*Editors note: In the first four episodes, our streaming software caused Pastor Joe Wilson's voice to have an undesirable clipping sound attached to it. Since our streaming software recorded it this way, it is uneditable. Thankfully, the problem seems to be resolved, starting in episode 5.

You may recall that a church in London sent John Myles and Thomas Proud back to Wales to preach, baptize, and plant churches. This Particular Baptist church was known as the Glasshouse Church. Their pastors at the time were William Consett and Edward Drapes. They were an early congregation of Particular Baptists in London and four of their pastors signed the 1651/52/53 editions of the First London Baptist Confession of faith. There are reasons to believe that this body had multiple Welsh connections, including leading members and even a pastor. So it may explain why they were not only instrumental in sending Myles and Proud back to Wales, but also wrote the Welsh churches frequently. There are eight letters recorded from them. Each is signed with a number of male names including pastors and others, perhaps deacons, other leading men, or those with a Welsh family connection.

We have spent our last few episodes studying the Welsh Baptist beginnings, leaders, writings, and move to the colonies. One of the most precious of their treasures, still possessed by us today, is the Ilston Records, also known as the Ilston Book. This is a record from the first church planted by John Myles at Ilston in Wales and consists in three parts: a list of members, notes about church events he considered important, and finally, transcripts of letters between churches. Myles brought the book with him to Plymouth Colony and it continued to be used as the new Baptist church book at Swanzey until 1844. So there is a “Welsh” part and an “American” part to the present Records.
