In the meantime, this episode is released on "Araw ng Kagitingan" or Day of Valor, and the premiere of GOMBURZA on Netflix. Despite this national holiday, there seems to a a kind of fatigue and cynicism surrounding nationalism these days. Here, I relate Randy David's discussion on political despair with the need to continue the civic excitement ignited by GOMBURZA.

  • The 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) was one of the highest grossing festivals our country has had in years. The top-grossing and most-watched movie from this line-up is Rewind(2023) starring Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. In this Bonus episode, I invited my Dad to discuss what Rewind says about Marriage, Gender roles, Family Values, Jesus Christ and Story-telling in Filipino films.

  • This episode was prompted after I discovered the exciting, incisive, and polemical book, Post-Dilawan Cinema and the Pandemic(2023) at the BLTX Small Press expo. We discuss Philippine Cinema through the lens of class struggle with the book's Author, Epoy Deyto. The conversation spans the issues of movie-going, how ph cinema alienates the poor, the ideological content of films, the intersections of politics and business in Philippine Cinema, and Metro Manila Film Festival.

  • Apologies if the sound for this episode is off. My microphone had technical difficulties so I had to re-dub my parts for audio clarity.

For this holiday season, this episode will talk about mental health We always hear a lot about mental health. This may contain sensitive themes. We heara lot of buzzwords like anxiety, depression, toxicity, stress, trigger warnings etc . While many dismiss it as a lack of faith or resilience or a fad among the youth, there is a real phenomenon ofan increasing number of diagnoses, which need medication and therapy, and at extreme cases may lead to self-harm and suicide. Many people have integrated mental health into popular discourse but there are still other parts of society that do not understand or tolerate it. There is a lot we do not fully understand about this reality. This week, we have two guests RS Mojica and Bill Fuentes from Mental Health PH, to hopefully help us understand and demystify mental health and how ordinary citizens can address this issue.

  • Hello Mga Ka-P*I*, this is your host, Matt Ordonez. As you know, this is, admittedly a belated release for the third anniversary of the P*I* podcast and for that I thank all of you for listening and following the podcast until now. Today, September 21, is also the anniversary of the declaration of Martial law. For this reason, I decided to do something different and show a new piece of Philippine history. I recently came across a letter addressed to former president, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The letter was written by the late Atty. Eufemio Domingo, who at the time was an accomplished Mabini Lawyer and would later be appointed as a Chairman of the Commission on Audit during the administration of President Corazon Aquino. He was known by some as "one of the last honest men in government." The letter was dated on August 28, 1973, almost a full year after the declaration of martial law. It conveys a very mixed message. While he does sympathize with President Marcos with the need for government control, instilling discipline on society, the curbing of a corrupt elite, and the alleviation of widespread poverty in the country, he also expressed doubts with the implementation of Martial law. He also did not necessarily believe in the immediate restoration of democracy either but proposed a more "enlightened liberal dictatorship," perhaps a compromise and appeal to Marcos' better nature in order to improve the country's dire situation. In the end, Atty. Domingo pleads for President Marcos to grant the Filipino nation a new social contract and national purpose, challenging him to be a true father of the nation. Honestly, I am not entirely sure what to feel with this document. It certainly does not neatly fit in my own views nor the views of today's political camps. What I can say is, even an intelligent man with integrity like Atty. Eufemio Domingo did not see the situation as "black or white" even during the Martial law years itself. This is only the perspective of one man but perhaps it is worth considering given the difficulty of our current situation. I share this document not to re-assert or admonish his perspective but to stir some conversation regarding our history and the meaning of Martial law.

Although Atty. Domingo tried sending the letter to the president, it is unknown whether President Marcos Sr. received or read the letter

The following is an audio recording of myself reading the letter as faithfully as I can for everyone to judge for themselves. I look forward to any comments or responses any listener may have. Thank you and I hope you appreciate the recording.

  • This episode is all about books. They aren't only things we read but things we buy, write, produce, market, and sell. We discuss the country's reading culture and the status of publishing sectors with guest, Kevin Ansel Dy from the National Book Development Board. We also discuss some tips for publishers and authors on how to improve the situation and some interesting books about books in the recommendations.

This episode is produced in partnership with the Manila International Book Fair 2023. The MIBF is back with over 100 publishers, from indie to international. We sit down with Adele Webb and discuss her latest book, Chasing Freedom: The Philippines' long journey towards Democratic Ambivalence

We discuss what democratic ambivalence means for Philippine politics, where it came from, and how we can move forward from knowing about this ambivalence. We also discuss the middle class, and re-evaluate the concept and re-assess their role in democratization.
