  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Rosie, who brings a relevant and powerful inquiry for our consideration:  How can I quickly regulate my emotions and ground myself, so I don't get lost in the story my mind creates?

This is a deeply relevant inquiry—who hasn’t found themselves trapped by the narratives they carry in their mind? It’s all too common to become our own biggest triggers, getting swept away by our thoughts and emotions.

Recovery, however, is more than abstinence. It’s about moving beyond the limiting stories that keep us stuck and discovering new ways of thinking that empower us. It’s the process of letting go of old, unhelpful stories and embracing ones that enhance our connection to truth, power, love, and life itself.

By rewriting our stories, we can open the door to deeper healing and a more authentic, fulfilling existence.

    Tommy Discusses:

How to disrupt negative emotionsHow to reframe the narratives that keep you stuckYour thoughts hold no power over youHow the mind and breath are connectedYou are not your thoughts and emotions

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re joined by Elaine, who draws our attention to one of the most challenging scenarios in all of addiction: What steps can parents take to support their grown child in addiction recovery?

How do I remain silent when my child continues to make bad choices?  I don't want to enable them. I don't know how to support them. What can I do? This inquiry will bring up important questions about how to position oneself to be of maximum use to a person who is struggling with active addiction.

This is one of those inquiries that will resound across the recovery community globally. I don't know of a family that hasn't been touched by addiction. This is an extremely relevant and important inquiry as we seek to be better, more skillful, and loving when supporting other people who might be struggling with active addiction.

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we have Kathy bringing a very unique yet relevant inquiry that requires a bit of unpacking. Kathy inquires: what is the difference between being an introvert and isolating?

Kathy wrote to us and said, “I usually hear that human beings are hardwired for connection and that we are social creatures. I do not believe it to be true for every human being - it isn’t true for me.”

As we go down the path of this inquiry, we'll learn that Kathy has been introverted most of her life and that her family was not necessarily comfortable with that.

We explore what it means to find solitude, the importance of cultivating a relationship with oneself, and how that relationship compares in importance and in necessity with the relationships with those around us.

This inquiry brings up a lot of questions about the difference between being an introvert and self-isolation.

    Tommy Discusses:

Bruce is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. He was on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin's School of Medicine, and later performed groundbreaking stem cell research at Stanford University. You may have read about that in his best-selling book, The Biology of Belief.

In 2009, Bruce received the prestigious Goy East Award in Japan in honor of his scientific contribution to world harmony.

This is a life-changing interview on how we can let go of addiction and upgrade our subconscious programming.

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Donna, who asks such a brave, honest, and raw question: Is It Possible To Fully Heal From Sexual Trauma?

Can the trauma of childhood sexual abuse be overcome? The unfortunate reality is that sexual and physical abuse are very present in our world. Donna’s inquiry gives us an opportunity to explore healing from these deep, formative wounds.

I believe that healing is always possible. It requires a combination of ingredients, a certain alchemy, and a willingness to sow the seeds of forgiveness and compassion for oneself and others.  Frankly, it is incredibly difficult, but absolutely attainable, especially for someone who asks a question such as this.

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Elizabeth, who brings an incredibly powerful inquiry: How Can I Remain Spiritual During Troubling Times?

So many people I speak with are feeling lost, sad, depressed, or despairing in the face of the world's difficulties. Of course, it doesn’t help that we are attached to devices that inform us endlessly of other people's challenges.

This inquiry gives us a moment to explore the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Through this, we can develop a strategy for managing the myriad of challenges that the people of the world are facing.

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Galen brings to light the addictive nature of procrastination.

When we actively avoid things we need to do - and even things we may want to do - it erodes our confidence. We may even take other actions that cause us harm.

I look at procrastination as one of the four aggravations: Negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment. These are all patterns of belief and behavior that get in the way of a person's happiness. So, while nobody ‘craves’ these four aggravations, they do fit my definition of addiction: Any behavior someone continues to do despite it bringing negative consequences into their life.

This brings the concept of addiction to everyone's doorstep. Most of us have experienced any or all of these four aggravations at some point… so why do we continue to do these things when they are getting in the way of our progress and desires?

Any pattern of behavior that stops us from living the life we want to live should be addressed. So let’s dive into the roots of procrastination and discuss ways to break free of this habit for good.

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Tracy, who inquires: Will my recovery journey positively impact my children? This is such a powerful inquiry that I know will have relevance for us all.

Part of this exploration will lead us to understand that there is no such thing as a perfect parent. There is no such thing as parenting without doing some harm. We all have negative ingrained behaviors we see in ourselves that inevitably get passed to our children.

Many of us struggle with the idea that we've done something unconsciously or consciously, which will affect the outcome of our children's life in some negative way.

This is an inquiry about our healing journey as individuals and how we can relieve ourselves of guilt, process through shame, and come out to a much better place. This is relevant for everyone whether you have children or not

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Nicole is here with us bringing an inquiry about what I call the real gateway drug. Of course, I'm speaking about sugar. Nicole asks: Am I addicted to sugar? Should I abstain completely or is there a place of moderation?

Now, I believe that addressing one's relationship with food and sugar in particular is a central part of recovery for everyone. In Nicole's case, she let go of alcohol several years ago and wants to take her recovery journey to the next level by addressing her relationship with food.

I've seen countless people stuck in the frequency of addiction because they stay in old addictive patterns when it comes to food. This is one of the most important inquiries when it comes to true recovery as we need to be present in our minds and bodies to address the underlying reasons for our food cravings.

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we have Bob here with us at 20 years sober. Bob is asking a profound question related to the 12 step path: How would you describe the process of becoming entirely ready?

Now, for those who are not familiar with step six, it reads: we were entirely ready to have God remove these defects of character.  This brings up a lot of questions and some confusion about what God is doing and how God does it exactly. We need to explore this and ask ourselves: what do we need to do to truly advance ourselves along a spiritual path?

How can we awaken out of addiction and experience true freedom? What is the path? What does God have to do with it? What do we have to do with it?

  • On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Brian asks an incredibly profound question: Can a person change their personality? He goes on to explain that the origin of his inquiry is due to his use of sarcasm and how he does not want to speak in that same tone with that same sharpness, especially to those he loves.

As someone who grew up in New York City, I'm well-trained in sarcasm, and this inquiry hit home for me.

This naturally leads us to a powerful discussion about the nature of personality and whether we can change our deeply ingrained patterns, or if we are set in our ways forever.

  • In this episode of In the Circle, we dive into a compelling discussion with Patrick, a dedicated individual in long-term recovery, who inquires: Should Purpose Guide Your Path When Helping Others?

Patrick is at a crossroads in his service journey as he questions whether to pursue a conventional counseling career or continue his grassroots efforts of directly assisting people on the streets of San Francisco. Our discussion opens up a broader exploration of what it means to follow one's "Dharma," or true purpose, in the realm of service and recovery.

This is a powerful reminder that true service comes from the heart, driven by a genuine desire to help others and make a difference.

  • In this episode of In the Circle, Today, we'll hear an inquiry from Carla, who asks an important question regarding friendship and letting go: How do I release the ties of a long-term friendship that has become codependent? How can I let go of relationships that no longer serve me?

This inquiry takes us into this realm of relationships, reminding us that friendships, connections, business partnerships, and romantic relationships all have the potential to become codependent if we try to control or place someone else's needs inappropriately before our own.

As we delve into this topic, we're looking at shifting from blame and complaint to a place of self-reflection and growth. It's important to remember, you always have a choice, letting go of a friendship that no longer serves our well-being can be an act of self-care and liberation for all involved parties.

  • In this episode of In the Circle, we are joined by Jamie who inquires: How can I finally be free from the frequency of addiction?  Jamie expresses that he has just celebrated five years of recovery, yet he feels that recovery should be easier by now.

What will finally set us free? How can we truly surrender and let go of the frequency of addiction? There isn't just one path to freedom; it varies for everyone. The steps and yoga are practices to help us live more skillfully and truthfully.

Letting go is not about effort but about realizing the irrelevance of what no longer serves us. This journey is about reorienting yourself towards truth and surrendering to what is real, allowing you to let go and move forward.

This episode is for anyone feeling stuck in their recovery journey and looking for ways to break free and reach a higher level of liberation.

  • In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Sam, who brings our attention to an addiction that we don't often consider, the addiction to the struggle itself. Sam inquires: How Can I Break Away From Victimhood?

Most of us can look back and, if we’re self-conscious human beings, notice some patterns repeating themselves, holding us back. The most common being self-sabotage.

This brings up a powerful psychological and spiritual discussion about how we can move out of victimhood. How can we overcome our resistance to the next level? What do we need to do to move into empowerment and personal mastery?

Well, it just so happens that the ancient yogis had an answer to this. The sages had an answer to this, the seers, the seekers had an answer to this, and they wrote it down in some powerful scriptures, and we're going to learn from those lessons today about how to move from victimhood to mastery.

  • In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Dorcus, who brings us an incredibly vital inquiry: How Can I Navigate Relapse Without Fear Or Shame? This normal and stigmatized phenomenon is part of most individuals' recovery journeys.

We explore the traditional 12-step method that requires starting over on day one post-relapse. While this method emphasizes the importance of recognizing milestones in recovery, it can also lead to feelings of shame and guilt, which may prevent people from re-engaging with the support they need.

This conversation is crucial for anyone looking to navigate the ups and downs of recovery and to reach a higher consciousness or awakening through their journey.

  • In this episode of In the Circle, we're honored to have Mark join us from Northern England, bringing a profound topic that touches the core of many recovery journeys: self-forgiveness and building genuine self-confidence. Mark inquires: How can I learn to forgive myself and be confident in my self-worth?

For those of us in recovery, particularly during the early stages, the act of forgiving ourselves can seem monumental. This inability to forgive often leaves us trapped in a cycle of persistent low self-esteem. Understanding and resolving these feelings is a crucial step on the path to recovery.

It's an essential conversation for anyone struggling with guilt or shame and for those seeking insight into their journey towards healing.
