  • Robert Egger's latest film, Nosferatu, is loaded with dread. That feeling of dread is largely delivered by the amazing sound design created by Damian Volpe (Sound Designer, Re-recording Mixer & Supervising Sound Editor), Steve Little (Supervising Sound Editor, Dialog Editor & Supervising ADR Editor) and the rest of the sound team. Egger's instructions were to base everything on organic sounds, so eerie ambiences were built out of the actors breathing and machines were built to create haunting winds. They also discuss the voice processing that was done to create the iconic voice of Count Orlock and lots more. • Director Steve McQueen's new film, Blitz, is full of stunning visuals. The audio team was tasked with coming up with sounds that could match, and often exceed, the beauty of the images they are accompanying. The war surrounding our main characters is often happening off screen, as the bombs are raining down as a catalyst for the human drama happening in underground shelters and tube stations. The team had to dream up the sound design of steam trains, massive fires and explosions galore.  All of this while creating a realistic sound scape for 1940s London. James Harrison and Paul Cotterell both served as Blitz's re-recording mixers and supervising sound editors and they are joined in this talk by production sound mixer John Casali.

  • Gladiator II is the massive sequel to director Ridley Scott's award winning original film, released in 2000. This time everything is raised up a few notches though. The sound team of Paul Massey (Dialog/Music Re-Recording Mixer) Danny Sheehan (Supervising Sound Editor), Matt Collinge (Supervising Sound Editor & SFX/Foley Re-Recording Mixer) and Stéphane Bucher (Production Sound Mixer) had to equal, and even exceed, that levelling up with their sound work. So much detail and effort went into making the crowd reactions in the Roman Coliseum, almost narrate the emotions of the battles. The production sound team and the audio post team had to work hand in hand to create this impressive feast for the ears.

  • Wicked has music that swings from massive orchestral pieces, to delicate underscore. There is sound design adding comedy, tension and fear. On top of all that, there is the singing, recorded live on set, that really brings out the emotions of the story. Production sound mixer Simon Hayes tells us how they captured the vocals on a busy set and supervising sound editors Nancy Nugent Title & John Marquis discuss building up the sounds to create the sonic world of Oz. Supervising music editor Jack Dolman, discusses how the music all came together from pre-records to the final edit. All that work, so re-recording mixers Andy Nelson and John Marquis could sculpt the mix to make this crowd pleasing epic operate at its peak.

  • Wind is hard to do sound design for.... really hard.  What can sound like a huge powerful gust, when you are out in the world with a microphone, is often a major let down when you get back to the studio to listen. So I jumped at the chance to talk with the Twisters sound team to learn how they tackled the winds in this tornado focused film. Supervising sound editors Bjorn Schroeder & Al Nelson are joined by re-recording mixers Chris Boyes & Pete Horner, as well as assistant supervising sound editor Sarah Shaw, to break down how they designed the swirling wind (and lots more!) in this blockbuster adventure film. • The new film A Complete Unknown follows the early life of Bob Dylan as he first arrives in New York City and meets the people that would define his musical journey. Director James Mangold's movie features live performances in small rooms, bars, as well as massive festivals and the sound team had to make each song feel real and unique. Supervising Sound Editor Don Sylvester, Re-recording Mixer Paul Massey, Supervising Music Editor Ted Caplan and Production Sound Mixer Tod Maitland tell us how they built the live scenes of musical history with the use of real vintage microphones, cleaver editing and many passes on the mix stage.

  • Four members of the sound team from director Jacques Audiard's new film, Emilia Pérez, joined me for a talk about how they tried to use the sound design to make a new kind of musical. Cyril Holtz (Sound Supervisor & Re-Recording Mixer), Aymeric Devoldère (Supervising Sound Editor), Hortense Bailly (Supervising Voice Editor) and Carolina Santana (ADR Supervisor) share their workflows on this complicated film. Including dealing with songs featuring pre-recorded vocals, live singing from on set and ADR recorded months later and making it all flow seamlessly. • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the kind of film that feels like anything can happen at any time. The wild sound design plays a large role is setting up that feeling of comedic unease. Supervising Sound Editor Jimmy Boyle, Re-Recording Mixers Chris Burdon & Gilbert Lake, Supervising Dialogue Editor Buster Flaws and Music Consultant & Arranger Mike Higham, join the podcast to talk about their bizarre adventures to create the sounds of Beetlejuice BeetleJuice. From re-creating classic rock tracks from scratch to using their own voices to create the sounds of the underworld, lots of creative thinking was needed. This episode was recorded at Formosa Trident studios, in London.

  • When Alex Garland's latest film, Civil War, was released earlier this year, there was a lot of talk about the sound design of the film and its ultra-realistic take on the sound of battle. I was invited by the sound team to come to Pinewood Studios, near London, to hear the film in the room it was mixed in. We talk about the decision process they went through to land on the innovative mix of the film. Glenn Freemantle, (Supervising Sound Editor/Sound Designer), Gillian Dodders (Supervising Dialogue/ADR Editor) and Ben Barker, (co-supervising sound editor) discuss how the sound design evolved on the mix stage, building up chaos with loop group, and their creative use of silence.

  • This past September, Tonebenders' host Tim Muirhead got to cover The Toronto International Film Festival. In this episode he interviews the sound teams behind some of the films he saw at TIFF '24. The main interview is with Eugenio Battaglia and Michael Babcock who did the sound work behind the psychological horror, Heretic. Next, Katie Halliday drops by to talk about her work as supervising sound editor on the boxing film The Fire Inside. Next up Zach Goheen and Juan Campos discuss the sound design of The Last Showgirl. Finally director Olivier Sarbil sits down for a one on one about his sound focused documentary, Viktor.

  • Gemma Nicholson made the leap from being a busy sound editor to a successful post production supervisor. It is not a typical career path, but it gives her insight into the sound work done on any given project. This differentiates her from many other post supervisors, that might not have this built-in knowledge. In this interview she gives us her advice on how to get the most out of a working relationship with your post production supervisor. We discuss how to ask for more budget, how to set expectations, all the other departments that they deal with and lots more.

  • The Palme D’or winner from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Anora is the latest film from director Sean Baker. Anora is also one of my favourite movies of the year so far. Co-supervising sound editors (and also the re-recording mixers) Andy Hay and John Warrin discuss how they molded the sound of this film. The film was largely shot docu-style with lots of overlapping dialogue and real life sound obtrusions, and a significant amount takes place in dance clubs with loud music blaring. These combined to make sound edit and mix particularly challenging.

  • "Best Score" Oscar winner and Grammy "Album of the Year" winner, Jon Batiste joins Tonebenders to talk about his score for the Jason Reitman film, Saturday Night. He discusses the unusual way the music was recoded. It was captured on the set of the film during the evenings, after shooting was wrapped up each day. He also explains the way this idea came together and the people he collaborated with in order to pull it off. • At the premier of Saturday Night at The Toronto International Film Festival, Director Jason Reitman made a special point of telling the audience that the sound team "put in a lot of work into making it feel like they didn't do any work at all". This is not the kind of film that you would think would have tricky sound obstacles, but that was not the case at all. Supervising Sound Editors Will Files, Lee Gilmore and David Butler, join production sound mixer Steven Morrow and music editor Chris Newlin to talk about the challenges they faced on this film. Don't miss part 2 of our coverage coming out next, featuring Jon Batiste about how the score was recorded on set during production?!

  • The Sounding Board 4.0 has just been announced by The Cinema Audio Society and The Motion Picture Sound Editors! So that makes it a great time to push out this talk from last year's Sounding Board, that was moderated by Tonebenders' host Tim Muirhead. We have all heard many interviews with Re-Recording Mixers, so as a contrast, this panel focuses on the rest of the important mixers involved in the audio post process. Foley Mixer Gary DeLeone (and his Foley Artist, Michell Kohen), ADR/Loop Group Mixer Jesse Dodd and Scoring Mixer David Boucher all get a spotlight to shine on their craft. This episode was recorded live in front of The Sounding Board's audience in October 2023.

  • Inside Out 2 takes the foundation of the original film and pushes those ideas even further, especially with sound design. Coya Elliot and Ren Klyce join the show to discuss how the glass memory balls became a much more important sound in this sequel and how they recorded and designed sounds for all the hockey sequences. They also talk about the lessons they learned from the first film as their dialog treatments went from mix theatre to real world cinemas, and the adjustments to their approach in part two.

  • Kneecap is a film chock full of manic energy, about an Irish hip-hop group swept up into a political grassroots movement almost against their will. This perfect mix of the music, multiple languages and madcap sound design fuels the chaos around our main characters. The Audio Post team of Louise Burton (Dialog Supervisor), Richard Armstrong (Music Editor), Aza Hand (Re-Recording Mixer) and Brendan Rehill (Supervising Sound Editor) tell us about recording ADR for live music performances, creating and mixing crowds going bonkers and the tricky art of making stereo songs intended for home listening fill up a large cinema.

  • Today we are going to be talking about field recording for the National Parks Service with recordist Chris Trevino. He tells us about his recent recording gig at Isle Royale Nation Park in Michigan, where he had his mics rolling in the park for 2 summer weeks. His goal was to capture the natural sounds of the pristine environment and the animals that call it home.  Chris discusses how he got the contract with the Parks Service, how he prepared for 2 weeks with no power and what it took to pull it off once he was out in the wilderness.
