We have heard "you are what you eat!" since our grade school years. As we learn more about the health risks associated with ultra processed foods, excessive sugar, and bad fats, it got us wondering- could a toxic diet contribute to toxic personalities?
It appears that there is a correlation between bad diet and bad behaviors. According to Science Daily, a "balanced diet is associated with better mental health, superior cognitive functions, and higher amounts of gray matter in the brain." Health Partners reports that nutrients in food we consume "literally become part of what makes up our brains."
That may give you pause as you chomp on those chips, huh? Everything in moderation. :)
If good diet produces healthy brains and mental health, what does a shit diet create? Poor cognitive function. Mental health risks. Verbal deficits. Skipping those meals? Jumping on that extended fast? Welcome to higher risks for psychopathic personality traits.
Maintaining brain health with proper diet enables better sleep, improved decision making skills, keener discernment and emotional balance (as the centers for emotive responses are in your brain, not your heart, folks!).
Your hosts share some of these disturbing findings in this episode, along with suggestions for healthy eating regardless of your location or income level. Grab a handful of dark berries and learn how to eat to mental health!

Grab a seat and pour a hot cup of tea- we are tackling a "taboo" subject-religion- but from a specific point of view. We will explore just a few ways in which deeply held personal religious beliefs from one or more individuals can serve to alienate, exclude, or even harm others in surprising ways.
Be it a religious display in schools and government buildings to which company holidays are provided, the conversation around religion's place in our lives has moved from personal to public policy. It is time to acknowledge what occurs on a regular, daily basis from this unique point of view.
Religion is personal. Faith is a choice. However, certain beliefs may prevent women from promotion, access to information, and even exclusion from advancement. Religions should not serve in an obscene game of rock-paper-scissors to determine which one wins in policy over people.
Should we hold a follow-up episode with guests to speak on this topic at a deeper level? Let us know!

We have spoken extensively about the overt abuser- the screamer, the bully, even the psychopath (remember- it has been estimated that 25% of CEOs are psychopathic- makes so much more sense!). What about the covert abuser?
The aggressor that plays victim.
The low-key schemer.
The saboteur.
According to Psychology Today, the abuse from these muted narcissistic bandits is no less harmful than the full-on assault of their puffed-up psychopathic counterparts. We felt it worthy to place a spotlight on the subject and send these passive-aggressive parasites scrambling for the darkness in which they reside.
Ok, dramatic, but you so is the impact from these individuals. They defend and disarm, cheer and then scathe, sympathize and then stab. They sap the strength of Samson himself- but there is a way to protect yourself- even thrive.

Education. Whether public or private, our education system (and the support system around it) serves as the foundation for generational growth- or the development of toxic behaviors that last well into adulthood.
Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour.
Technology has changed education. Laptops issued in grade school, apps to request a bathroom pass, and virtual classrooms necessitated by the pandemic have changed how our students- and the next generation of workers- interact. Are we creating a more fragile- or more resilient- workforce as a result?
And what of our own education experience? Instructors that encouraged our creativity and empowered our independent thought helped to shape creative contributors, while teachers that alienated or belittled students carved divots of disdain into the tender brains of their students. How are we functioning today as a result?
Stella and Roberta tackle the topic in this...educational....episode.

Up to 99% of domestic violence victims add financial abuse to the sickening list of verbal, physical, and emotional abuse inflicted upon them by their partner. Control of family finances, refusal to share information on the status of those finances, and even hiding/downplaying money, retirement savings, pensions, and life insurance are all too common.
Financial abuse is not restricted to these relationships, however.
The parent that obtains credit in a child's name.
The child berates and manipulates their parents for money.
The caretaker steals credit cards, personal checks, and even cash from your loved one in their care.
The romance scammer that steals life savings.
The employer that uses your dependency on paychecks to drive fear and toxicity.
Financial abuse is more commonplace than you may be comfortable with- and far more deadly. Manipulation, distrust, and outright robbery can cause deep emotional trauma- without a safety net, victims of financial abuse are at a high risk for mental and physical crises.

Projections- gaslighting in 3D- are both aggressive and defensive mechanisms that we find equally fascinating and frustrating. In the office, these projections can create a narrative that alters how others perceive you. In your personal life, these projections create dysfunctional- even abusive- relationships.

After a year (!) of providing content on toxic work environments, your hosts had an epiphany.
Toxic behaviors are the cause of toxic work environments; toxic people exhibit toxic behaviors. Toxic people don't leave work and become different people- so what happens to the families, friends, and communities infected with toxicity? It was worth adding chairs to the table to spill even more tea.
Don't worry- we are not abandoning the workplace; rather, we are expanding beyond it to include topics such as financial abuse, toxic traits, and even toxicity in religion (pearl clutch warning!). We want to provide a holistic view of the behaviors that bleed into our lives so that you are better equipped to handle these people when they cross your path- including at work.
This episode expands upon gossip and slander- a topic covered in season 2- from a unique perspective. Your hosts share personal stories of slander and the impact of those experiences, how they overcame those issues, and how to move peace forward.

Forget chocolates and roses—Stella and Roberta are serving up a brew of workplace reality in the Toxic Tea Room podcast. This episode, they're dissecting the love-hate dynamics of Valentine's Day and how it mirrors our relationships with toxic work practices. From the passive-aggressive notes to the stifling effect of micromanagement, they're spilling the tea on what makes workplaces tick... or explode. Get ready for a dose of tough love and hard truths that will make you rethink your office dynamics.
Your hosts will cover off-putting toxicity like office romances (and the subsequent favoritism), micro-management ("Don't stand/Don't stand so/Don't stand so close to me"), poor communication (why speak when you can scream?) and many more. Grab your coffee or champagne glass- we don't judge here- and commiserate with the Queens of Anti-Mean. Wait- is that even a thing? Who is writing the show notes this week? Seek help, for heaven's sake!
And for a new twist on relaxing after a hard day dealing with bossholes, consider the array of products from Canna River. Canna River provides legal hemp and CBD products right to your home! "Greed is good," said Gordon Gekko of "Wall Street" fame, with hair slicked back and hardened- as if his pomade was hand-wrung from the ink of his petroleum stocks. Talking on impossibly large cell phones (by today's standards), drinking, drugs, and the ever-present insider trading, "Wall Street" encapsulated the extremes of 1980s capitalistic worship- and all of its downfalls.
Today's Gordon Gekkos look relaxed in front of CNBC cameras, a sportcoat at most, waxing poetic verse about the grand changes their companies' tech would produce, eagerly identifying themselves as the first/the innovator/the unicorns, gleefully accepting the coffers of capital and credit presented by investors at their feet. These Gekkos are not stock brokers. These Gekkos relish in singularity but swam in circles like schools of fish around sharks. These Gekkos bathed in the California sun versus the steel and glass reflection of the New York skyline, but the greed was ever-present.
And no, it was not good.
Welcome to Silicon Valley, 2022-2023. Fueled by equal parts genius, arrogance, callousness, and of course, the pandemic, Silicon Valley reemerged as the birthplace of billionaires with dazzling solutions and valuations. However, for many startups, the solutions touted to investors were as much designed to attract investors as they were to solve a problem- perhaps a solution in search of a problem. A change in consumer habits post-COVID and these companies fell hard and fast- like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce fell in love. It seemed appropriate to have Tay and Trav show up in the show notes, because they are everywhere. Unlike Trav and Tay Tay, however, there is nothing to love about these greedy companies.
Your hosts will discuss the spectacular start-up failures in Silicon Valley, the billions upon billions of dollars wasted, the dizzying rise of these companies, and the devastation left behind when those companies crashed. The common thread of these stories- greed- and the volume of waste these companies left behind will have you feeling some kind of way, as it were.

Ah, the performance review. One of the most anticipated- and dreaded- events of the year, as these reviews often come with annual raises- which takes you down a whole other rabbit hole of how these reviews come together, and the reindeer games that ensue. Reindeer games? It is no longer the holiday season. Let it go, gang.
A survey of 837 companies performed by WTW revealed that only 26% of those surveyed felt their performance appraisal process was effective. A Gallup study (2022) found that 95% of managers are dissatisfied with their organization's review system; that same study found that only 20% of employees are inspired by their review.
When you consider that nearly half of all companies provide performance appraisals once a year, it is critical to get this right. Failure to address these issues contributes to a toxic workplace culture.
Learn about the most common issues with performance appraisals, including central tendency error, halo effects, and more. Hear harrowing tails of the dreaded "360 review". Glean sage advice from Melissa Tipton for both manager and teammate to get the most out of the review process- and how leadership needs to set the stage for standards and properly allocate the raises.
Our hosts are joined by return guest Melissa Tipton, Director of Client Strategy for Compass Business Solutions. Melissa is a visionary in rethinking the employee experience. Having worked across multiple industries, Melissa partners with clients to capture their culture, mission, and values to drive organizational performance. Melissa holds a BS in Education from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Park University.

Today's Israel is equal parts holy land and hell; your worldview determines which side you view as which, though the reality is far more fluid than fixed. The conflict is both foreign and familiar, distant and next door all at once. The issues are simple, yet complex; death is the singularity that underscores the shouts from protestors and screams of suddenly orphaned children.
The headlines are terrifying; the images crush your soul. As of this recording, there is still no end in sight, and as people elevate their voices in solidarity behind one flag or another, blood continues to stain the ground where the prophets once preached. The confinement and the dehumanization are echoes of a past so horrible that we thought it would never be repeated. All of the horrors are displayed before us on every news channel, and every social media outlet, and every day the growls of Anti-Semitic and Islamaphobia grow from whispers to screams.
In fact, Anti-Semitic and Islamaphobic incidents are on a sharp rise around the world, including the USA.
The same toxic behavior covered extensively on this podcast- from mobbing to microaggressions- is explosive when passions around this issue, marinated in one's own implicit or explicit bias, are brought to the surface in the workplace. Employees in marginalized and under-represented populations are particularly vulnerable right now; employers must take care to ensure not only the inclusivity of these groups but also their safety.
On this special podcast, your hosts are joined by employment attorney powerhouse Mahir Nisar and returning guest and co-author of the Workplace Psychological Safety Act, Deb Falzoi, for an honest discussion of how to navigate through this perilous time with safety, inclusivity, and most of all, dignity.

Clouds gather in a once clear sky. The light gray wisps change to deepening shades of threat. Breezes that dance with your hair morph into slaps across your face. You race for shelter as the first violent drops fall from the sky; no pace is sufficient to avoid the emotions in the drops that drench you to your bones.
Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour.
You reach the door, relieved. The decision turns the knob and you step inside, where relief turns to despair- the swirling chaos of the storm replaces the shelter you anticipated. There are no walls to protect you. No roof shields you from the hail that rains down around you. Your eyes are drawn to the litter within the vortex before you- shreds of gleaming promises, contorted faces frozen in their last expression of anger, painful, blackened threads of whispers and gossip- and you realize that you have not escaped the storm, but are instead fused with it.
The allegory of a violent storm compared to a day in a toxic work environment may seem dramatic. However, for those dealing with toxic leaders, bullies, bossholes and the like, the storm is very real. Employment should not feel like deployment- and leaders need to provide the calm within the storm to create an inclusive, productive, and positive environment.
Alain Hyppolite joins our hosts to discuss this important approach. Alain is a Canadian-born Haitian father and husband who moonlights as a content creator and writer. With more than 10 years of leadership experience, Alain spends his time challenging the emotionless corporate grind and sharing how true leadership stems from the heart, not just the head. See more of Alain's content on LinkedIn, Medium, and his site.
