  • In today's episode I interview Dr. Bradley Nelson, author and creator of "The Emotion Code" and "The Body Code: Unlocking Your Body's Ability to Heal Itself". Over decades of work as a holistic chiropractic physician, Dr. Brad discerned that most of the physical discomfort and emotional distress his patients suffered was rooted in trapped emotions—the unseen emotional baggage we carry from hurtful life experiences.
“Each time you trap an emotion, you get stuck in the middle of whatever traumatic event you were experiencing,” he says. “So instead of moving beyond your angry moment, or a temporary bout with grief or depression, you retain this negative emotional energy within your body, potentially causing significant physical and emotional stress. Most people are amazed to find that their emotional baggage is more literal than they had imagined.”
Through his studies of ancient medical practices and modern quantum physics, Dr. Brad developed The Emotion CodeÂź, a simple yet powerfully effective method anyone can learn to release the trapped emotions that block us from wellness. Using his expertise as a computer programmer, Dr. Brad codified his techniques and created a "mind mapping" system that made his work highly reliable and repeatable.
Dr. Brad explains these techniques with step-by-step instructions for working with the body's energy healing power in his bestselling book “The Emotion Code: How to Release Your Trapped Emotions for Abundant Health, Love, and Happiness." First published in 2007, “The Emotion Code” was expanded and updated in a 2019 edition.
Dr. Brad’s new book, “The Body Code: Unlocking Your Body's Ability to Heal Itself,” is coming Feb. 21, 2023, from St. Martin’s Press. The Body Code system is based on the simple premise that the body is self-healing and knows what it needs in order to thrive.
The Body Code is designed to help people identify and release imbalances in six key areas ― Energies, Circuits and Systems, Toxicity, Nutrition and Lifestyle, Misalignments, and Pathogens ― that are the root causes of physical, mental, and emotional issues. By identifying and releasing these imbalances, readers become empowered to activate their body's innate healing power.

  • In today's episode I talk with one Valerie Root, who reached out to me after listening to the podcast and graciously agreed to share her current struggle with sugar and processed food.  Valerie is a wife, a mom of 4 boys (ages 9, 7, and 4 year old twins), and she works full time as a registered dietitian, so it goes without saying that her life is full! Food, nutrition, and health have always interested her. She was always the "small one" growing up, was even nicknamed “Little Val” by her family, however, she learned at a young age that food tasted amazing and made her feel good, and she found herself wanting more than the socially acceptable amounts.  Somewhere during her teenage years, she started overeating more frequently, sometimes around friends at sleepovers, other times when she was alone, and even though she felt physically ill when she over ate, the behavior persisted. She would take leftovers home from a restaurant because finishing the entire meal felt gluttonous, only to find herself eating the leftovers the minute she walked through the door.  She would stop at rest stops when she was driving by herself to and from college and load up on all the snacks, making sure to dispose of the wrappers before she arrived at school or at home. At the same time, she started restricting her food and over exercising to make up for the overeating in order to keep from gaining too much weight.  When she was 20, her older brother passed away unexpectedly, and that just heightened the binging, and food became even more of a comfort.  Before long, she was using food to grieve, to cure boredom, to procrastinate doing schoolwork, to reward herself after a chaotic day, and to numb any other uncomfortable feeling that came up. Somewhere along the way, Val also came to the conclusion that thinness was synonymous with successful and happy, so therein began her 20+ year journey of overeating and weight gain, and restriction and weight loss, in order to be thin, and therefore successful and happy.  Of course, she never felt any happier at her lowest weight.  Since becoming a dietitian, she's felt an immense amount of pressure to do all the right things nutritionally, but in reality, she knows the power that sugar and highly processed foods have over us, and she faces the same struggles that most of us face. Her goals today are to establish healthy eating habits in her kids, find peace with food and eating, and strive to accept herself as she is but work towards her healthiest self as she approaches 40.

  • In today's episode Danny and Catherine Mullaney are returning for a follow up interview. We will pick up the conversation from where we left off last time. (To hear their part one please go to episode #138) They live one day at a time. When they stay in the stream of life they will fall and get up, fall again and get up, etc. Falling is a part of recovery.
As explained in their first discussion their life’s motto can be summed up from the AA Big Book, “The spiritual life is not a theory. You have to live it.” Today Danny and Catherine will unpack that a little more by talking about the 12 steps which can be described as Trusting God, cleaning house, and helping others. The joy of living or the sweet life as Siobhan likes to say is found by living honestly in community which requires internal house cleaning and being of service to their fellow man whether they are in recovery or not. As Catherine said in our initial interview, “abstinence from sugar and flour is but a beginning.” So let’s go a little deeper with the Mullaneys today in living life on life’s terms.
The Mullaneys have been married for 34 years, have 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren. Catherine is a poet and a farmer in training, formerly an educator. Dan became an RN in sobriety and is nearing the celebration of 25th year of nursing.

  • In today's episode I talk with Sue Brown about her story and book, "Simply Sugar Free: Six Simple Steps to Conquer Sugar Addiction." Sue lost 52 pounds in 52 weeks when she was 52 by going Simply Sugar Free. Which is her code phrase for unraveling her lifelong sugar addiction.
Sue has always known that her weight problem was in her head, not her body. That sugar delivered great "highs" and moments of intense clarity and inspiration - and comfort.
As a child at breakfast, she heaped sugar on Frosted Flakes and washed it all down with Tang. After all, if it was good enough for astronauts it must be good enough for her. At lunch she shunned cold cuts for PB&J on Wonder bread. Dinner was usually mac & cheese or spaghetti.
That's a 100% carb day, recipe for an epic fail.
But that's what she wanted. What she craved. Her hard-working but poor single mother was doing the best she could, unwittingly caught in the trap between a sugar-craving child and a food industry that was (and still is ... ) happy to accommodate those cravings in the name of profit.
Along the way she went from comforting herself with sugar to using it like a drug, unable to stop. It helped her cope with what she would come to know and love as her highly-sensitive personality, a tendency toward introversion and a relentless creative drive.
For 15 years now she has been in remission from sugar addiction, and works tirelessly to help others improve their lives one step at a time, Sue is a Health Coach, and author of "Simply Sugar Free: Six Simple Steps to Conquer Sugar Addiction."

  • In today's episode I talk with Erika, who was a member of my group coaching program last fall, and is celebrating her 1-year sugarversary. We had such a great and open conversation about addiction! Erika was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She graduated from the University of Florida and later attended law school at Stetson University College of Law.  She currently lives in Miami where she owns and operates her law practice together with her husband. Erika identifies as a food addict.  After years of struggling with her weight and subscribing to the diet culture mentality, Erika became abstinent from sugar and flour on August 27, 2021.  She created a network of supportive family and friends and believes firmly in the principal of: “just for today”.  Erika and her husband have 2 little boys and a rescue dog named Leroy.
