  • On this episode of What Makes You Click, Kelvin welcomes Andrew Eccles, an award-winning photographer that has been shooting celebrities, models, athletes, politicians, musicians, and dancers for over three decades. Listen in as Andrew sheds light on some of the most powerful, career-defining projects of his life, along with his candid thoughts on the profound connection between the photographer and their subject and the loss of the “very magical process” of being a photographer.

Having somehow landed the position as Annie Leibovitz’s assistant in the 80s, Andrew takes us back in time to his odd international upbringing and his journey in discovering the intricacy of photography. Andrew and Kelvin reflect on what it means for photography to be “clean”, how to overcome complacency and burn out in your career, and the impactful differences between film and digital.

Plus, Andrew shares what he would do differently and what he would do the same if he started his artistic career over again!

    About the Guest:

Andrew Eccles was born in England and grew up in Toronto, Canada. His family moved to Hawaii when he was twelve where he attended high school for two years before returning to Vancouver and graduating there. He spent three years at The Ontario College of Art followed by two years in Texas before eventually settling in New York City. It was there that he began to pursue photography seriously.

Within four months Andrew landed an apprenticeship with Annie Leibovitz lasting three years. That was followed by brief stints working alongside Robert Mapplethorpe and Steven Meisel.

In 1987, Andrew became a professional photographer himself and has been shooting celebrities, models, athletes, politicians, musicians, and dancers ever since.

Over the past 33 years his work has appeared on the covers of countless magazines worldwide. He has also created an abundance of Advertising images for the Film, Television, Broadway, and Music Industries for use domestically and abroad.

    Kareem Black:

  • On this episode of What Makes You Click, Kelvin welcomes award-winning American photographer and author, best known for the book series My Last Supper, Melanie Dunea.

Melanie sheds light on the beginning of her interest in photography and writing, as well as the evolution of her career, having grown up with a mother who owned a bookstore and a grandfather who was a newspaper editor.

She tells the story of deciding to shoot her shot at being a fabulous photojournalist in Paris before “failing” and going to college back in the states. She shares her candid thoughts on majoring in photography versus being self-taught, as well as what it felt like to realize she wasn’t going to be successful in Paris.

“How I learned was knowing what I wanted and figuring out how to get there. You don’t need a fancy camera
you need to know what you want.” - Melanie Dunea

Melanie then highlights the power of listening to people’s feedback and following your gut, while speaking on how she used the Don’t Play With Your Food series to prove her skills to herself. She reflects on some of her favorite projects and opportunities, her opinions on seeking agency representation, and how the pandemic has shifted everyone’s perspective and presence in life.

“There are moments when you do need to stop and look at what is happening and see if there is room for you to grow and push
there are moments to also not push, those are hard.” - Melanie Dunea

Tune in to learn the inspiration and creative process behind My Last Supper, the power in giving back, and the key to building and leveraging your network to reach your potential.

  • On this episode of What Makes You Click, Kelvin welcomes Maren Levinson, Founder and Artist Representative at Redeye Representatives. Redeye is a creative agency representing contemporary photographers, illustrators and set designers to ad agencies, design firms, magazines and businesses of any size. Maren talks about the nitty gritty of what it’s like to find representation as a photographer and to be represented by a creative agency.

“A lot of photographers think that they need to impress an agent, but the best place to be to get an agent is to have agents trying to impress you. You should make yourself into the kind of artist that agents are clamoring to represent.” - Maren Levinson

Maren also shares the story of her photography journey, from finding inspiration in words, pictures, and architecture as a child to exploring editorial photography and founding Redeye Representatives. She speaks on how her vision of having a gallery morphed into the creation of Redeye and what it’s like to work in and build a creative agency’s team.

Then, Maren talks about what she looks for in artists, the importance of being clear on your distinct style and voice, and what it costs financially to be represented, noting the commission agencies receive from their artists’ revenues. She speaks on the effects of systemic racism on the photography industry and why Redeye strives to be of service to humanity by, for example, offering free BIPOC portfolio review.

Tune in to hear powerful advice on pursuing your creative dreams and to learn which photography trends have been appearing prior to and during the pandemic.

  • On this episode of What Makes You Click, Kelvin welcomes Carmen Chan, an editorial and commercial photographer who has taken a unique and unconventional route to the photography industry.

Carmen and Kelvin discuss why she pivoted from the taxing industry of film production, after learning how to use a point and shoot camera, to a more liberating career in photography. She sheds light on the highs and lows of pursuing a creative career, the uncertainty of the photography industry, and what keeps her motivated and dedicated to her art.

Carmen talks about her immigrant parents’ thoughts on her career path, how she transitioned from assisting in LA to working full-time in China, and what it’s like to land jobs and build a professional network in a country you just moved to. Kelvin and Carmen also share their thoughts on how race and gender have impacted their growth and their journeys in the photography industry.

Curious what it’s like to be represented by an agency?

Carmen shares what it’s really like to work with an agency as a photographer, when the right time to be represented by an agency is, and why she chose to work with Redeye Reps.

“I think the expectation is like, “When I get an agent, I’m gonna get all these jobs,” but it’s actually the opposite. You need to be getting enough jobs, you need to be getting your own jobs, building up your portfolio, working on bigger and bigger jobs, and then bring that to an agent to prove to them what you’re able to do on your own and what you’re capable of.” - Carmen Chan

Tune in to learn Carmen’s experience with imposter syndrome as a growing photographer and what she does to help relieve the feelings of imposter syndrome.
