  • Episode 078 - In May of 2013 police in New Jersey found respected, 73-year-old Lawyer, Joseph Galfy Jr. dead in the bedroom his home wearing only socks and underwear. Investigators were quickly onto a suspect who turned out to be a well known drifter.

Three months before, the suspect, 24-year-old, Canadian born Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, had become a internet celebrity, known as Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker. He was interviewed by Jessob Reisbeck for Fox News in Fresno California. In the interview Caleb, using another name, described coming to the aid of people who were being attacked by a large man who he'd been riding with only moments before. Using a hatchet from his backpack, Caleb had cleaved the man's skull allowing bystanders and later police to subdue him. McGillvary was apprehended days later, but only tried for the murder in May of 2019, 6 years later. Although convicted, he maintains his innocence claiming he killed Galfy in self-defence.Photo Credit: Jessob Reisbeck/YouTube/GlobalNews.ca screen grabSources: Wikipedia - Kai the Hatchet Wielding HitchhikerCourt Documents - People v McbrideFull Interview - Kai, Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker, Amazing Interview w/ Jessob ReisbeckKai's Legal Support Fundrazr PageKai's Legal Support Facebook PageKai's Jimmy Kimmel AppearanceSongify This! - Smash, Smash SMASH

  • From humble beginnings in suburban Melbourne to reincarnation as Jesus Christ, a cohort of devoted, well-heeled followers and an enviable real estate portfolio, Anne Hamilton Byrne who died in a nursing home last week really was the quintessential 20th Century cult leader. The only thing more shocking than the abuse she inflicted on dozens of children in her care throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, is how various Governmental authorities approved of her guardianship over them in the first place. This interview with journalist Chris Johnston, who created the book and documentary THE FAMILY with Rosie Jones.

The companion interview with former detective Lex De Man, whom you'll hear a lot about in this interview, was recorded the day after Anne's death.

  • It has been thirty years since Ted Bundy, arguably this country’s most notorious serial killer, was put to death in the electric chair by the state of Florida in 1989, but there continues to exist in our society a morbid interest in him and the ghastly way he murdered and disposed of the women he abducted in the 1970s.Many people want to know how a person could do the things that Ted Bundy did. It’s truly frightening to think that there are fellow human beings who possess such dark desires and act out their murderous tendencies on the innocent and unsuspecting. We tend to think of these individuals as inhuman or “evil,” which is the only thing that makes sense to us because what drives Ted Bundy, and others like him, are not feelings that any of us can remotely relate. In exploring what might have been working inside the mind of Ted Bundy, the Angel of Decay, triggering him to brutally snuff out the lives of so many young women, the purpose is not to increase his ignominious celebrity or sensationalize his heinous acts, but to shatter any such appeal. The only way to do that is to remember the women and young girls that he killed not merely as victims, but remembering who they were, how they lived, and the impact they had on their families as well as all those around them. They had a lot more in common than being casualties of Ted Bundy’s violent psycho-sexual desires. TED BUNDY: The Angel of Decay-Paul Lonardo

  • In 1971, there began in Rochester, N.Y., a series of hideous murders, cases that offered the starkest of contrast between good and evil: perfectly innocent victims, perfectly evil predators. The three victims were little girls, each named with the same first and last initial. Each, the legend said, had been dumped in a town that also began with that letter. The victims had all been last seen in an urban setting and their lifeless bodies were found raped and carelessly dumped along a rural roadside, strangled by ligature. Local girls with alliterative names were on high alert and told to be vigilant. The little ones didn’t quite get it, but they sensed it, something in their mother’s tighter grip on their little hand, or the way mom never relaxed when they were out of doors. The older ones looked at maps and guessed where their own lifeless bodies would be discovered in a ditch. No one wondered why the initials were important, what it all meant. They understood one thing: it was terrifying. NIGHTMARE IN ROCHESTER: The Double-Initial Murders-Michael Benson

  • In February of 1874, a group of six men set off through the high mountains of Colorado. Weeks later, only a man named Alfred Packer came out. • Truman Capote’s bestselling book “In Cold Blood” has captivated worldwide audiences for over fifty years. It is a gripping story about the consequences of a trivial robbery gone terribly wrong in a remote village of western Kansas.

But what if robbery was not the motive at all, but something more sinister? And why would the Kansas Bureau of Investigation press the Attorney General to launch a ruthless four-year legal battle to prevent fresh details of the State’s most famous crime from being made public, so many years after the case had been solved?

Based on stunning new details discovered in the personal journals and archives of former KBI Director Harold Nye—and corroborated by letters written by Richard Hickock, one of the killers on Death Row—“And Every Word Is True” meticulously lays out a vivid and startling new view of the investigation, one that will keep readers on the edge of their seats as they pick up where Capote left off. Even readers new to the story will find themselves drawn into a spellbinding forensic investigation that reads like a thriller, adding new perspectives to the classic tale of an iconic American crime.

Sixty years after news of the 1959 Clutter murders took the world stage, “And Every Word Is True” pulls back the curtain for a suspenseful encore to the true story of “In Cold Blood.” AND EVERY WORD IS TRUE: New found evidence reveals Trumna Capote's In Cold Blood is not the end of the story-Gary McAvoy

  • J. Reuben Appelman cracks open one of America’s most notorious murder sprees while simultaneously banging the gavel on his own history with violence. A deftly-crafted true crime story with grit, set amid the decaying sprawl of Detroit and its outliers.

With a foreword by Catherine Broad, sister of victim Timothy King.

Four children were abducted and murdered outside of Detroit during the winters of 1976 and 1977, their bodies eventually dumped in snow banks around the city. J. Reuben Appelman was six years old at the time the murders began and had evaded an abduction attempt during that same period, fueling a lifelong obsession with what became known as the Oakland County Child Killings.

Autopsies showed the victims to have been fed while in captivity, reportedly held with care. And yet, with equal care, their bodies had allegedly been groomed post-mortem, scrubbed-free of evidence that might link to a killer. There were few credible leads, and equally few credible suspects. That’s what the cops had passed down to the press, and that’s what the city of Detroit, and J. Reuben Appelman, had come to believe.

When the abductions mysteriously stopped, a task force operating on one of the largest manhunt budgets in history shut down without an arrest. Although no more murders occurred, Detroit and its environs remained haunted. The killer had, presumably, not been caught.

Eerily overlaid upon the author’s own decades-old history with violence, The Kill Jar tells the gripping story of J. Reuben Appelman’s ten-year investigation into buried leads, apparent police cover-ups of evidence, con-men, child ography rings, and high-level corruption saturating Detroit’s most notorious serial killer case. THE KILL JAR: Obsession, Descent, and a Hunt for Detroit's Most Notorious Serial Killer-J. Reuben Appelman

  • The FBI’s pioneer of criminal profiling, former special agent John Douglas, has studied and interviewed many of America’s most notorious killers—including Charles Manson, ”Son of Sam Killer” David Berkowitz and ”BTK Strangler” Dennis Rader—trained FBI agents and investigators around the world, and helped educate the country about these deadly predators and how they operate, and has become a legend in popular culture, fictionalized in The Silence of the Lambs and the hit television shows Criminal Minds and Mindhunter.

Twenty years after his famous memoir, the man who literally wrote the book on FBI criminal profiling opens his case files once again. In this riveting work of true crime, he spotlights four of the most diabolical criminals he’s confronted, interviewed and learned from. Going deep into each man’s life and crimes, he outlines the factors that led them to murder and how he used his interrogation skills to expose their means, motives, and true evil. Like the hit Netflix show, The Killer Across the Table is centered around Douglas’ unique interrogation and profiling process. With his longtime collaborator Mark Olshaker, Douglas recounts the chilling encounters with these four killers as he experienced them—revealing for the first time his profile methods in detail.

A glimpse into the mind of a man who has pierced the heart of human darkness, The Killer Across the Table unlocks the ultimate mystery of depravity and the techniques and approaches that have countered evil in the name of justice. THE KILLER ACROSS THE TABLE: Unlocking the Secrets of Serial Killers and Predators with The FBI's Original MINDHUNTER-Co-author Mark Olshaker

  • Today you’d call Ballantyne suburban, but back then, at the start of the summer of 1966, it was country — just a cluster of houses, some of them shacks, on or near Ballantyne Road, in the Town of Chili, NY. And while June 25 started like any other day it would end in a nightmare. In The Devil at Genesee Junction, veteran crime writer, Michael Benson, returns to his formerly rural hometown to take on the double homicide of his friends Kathy Bernhard and George-Ann Formiciola that took place that night.

The two girls were missing for a month and then found in the bushes horribly mutilated. The double homicide changed the author’s childhood suddenly, and drastically. He went from living in a rural playland, to being encased in fear, wondering who among them was the werewolf who cut up Kathy and George-Ann.

This heinous crime was never resolved, and didn’t go away. In recent years, the author has teamed up with a victim’s mom, and a local private investigator to delve deep into the 6/66 murders, developing along the way some strong new leads and shocking details. Together they have heated up this icy cold case, and their investigation has led them in a startling new direction. THE DEVIL AT GENESEE JUNCTION-Michael Benson
