  • Podcast Title: Rain, Rain, Go Away!
    Host: Duncan
Topic:Rainy Weather, Daily Frustrations, and Indoor Activities.
Focus: Present Perfect continuous (It has been raining), Future tense (It will continue), and sensory descriptions.

    [Script]
"Hello everyone! Welcome back to the podcast. I’m Teacher Duncan, and if you look outside the window right now, you already know what today's topic is. That's right... rain.

    [Script]
It has been raining non-stop for the past two days. Not just a little bit of rain, but pouring rain! When I woke up yesterday morning, the sky was completely grey and gloomy. I looked out the window and thought, 'Oh no, where is the sun?'
And guess what? I checked the weather forecast this morning, and the news is not good. It is going to continue raining for this entire coming week. Seven more days of water!
Living in Taiwan during the rainy season can be a bit difficult, can’t it? Think about your morning journey to school. You put on your raincoat, you open your umbrella, but by the time you walk into the classroom, your shoes are completely wet. Have you ever had wet socks at school? You walk across the floor and it goes squish, squish, squish. It is the worst feeling in the world!
Another funny problem is the laundry. In my house, we have clothes hanging everywhere right now because nothing will dry! The air is too humid. My living room looks like a clothing store.
But rainy days don’t have to be completely terrible. When it rains outside, it is the perfect excuse to stay inside, get cozy, and do your favorite indoor activities. You can play video games, you can bake cookies with your family, or—my favorite—you can listen to English podcasts!
So, let's make a deal. This week, while the rain is hitting your windows, don't be sad. Take out a good book, drink some hot milk tea, and stay dry. Rain, rain, go away, come again another day!
Now, let’s see if you can answer today's rainy day questions."

    OUTRO:
That is the end of our story. Good job!
Now, can you answer the three questions? Listen again if you need to.

  • Podcast Title: The "Hidden" Snack Mystery
    Host: Duncan
    Guest: Tracy
Focus: [Dialogue] Phrasal Verbs (find out, catch up, give up), Secrets, and Food vocabulary.

    [Script}
Teacher: Tracy, we have a very serious topic today. It’s about survival. How do you eat your favorite snacks without your kids stealing them?

Tracy: Oh, this is a professional skill. I have a "Secret Snack Map" in my head. If I leave a bag of cookies on the kitchen table, they disappear in three seconds. It’s like magic.

Teacher: It’s true! Kids have "snack radar." I can open a bag of chips in the basement, behind a closed door, and my boys will hear it from upstairs. They arrive in the kitchen like hungry zombies. "Mom... what are you eating? Can we have some?”

Tracy: (Laughs) "Hungry zombies" is perfect. So, I started getting creative. I found an old, empty box of "Super Bitter Green Tea." You know, the kind kids hate. I put my expensive Belgian chocolates inside that box. My kids see the green tea box and they make a face like they’re going to vomit. They never touch it!

Teacher: That is brilliant. I tried something similar. I bought a bag of "Spicy Dried Seaweed." My boys hate spicy food. I hid my gummy bears inside the seaweed bag. But it backfired!

Tracy: What happened? Did they find them?

Teacher: No, even worse. My wife didn't know the gummy bears were in there. She thought the seaweed was old, so she threw the whole bag in the trash! I lost all my candy! I was so sad.

Tracy: Oh no! That’s a tragedy! (Laughs) Last night, I thought I was being so smart. I was hiding in the pantry—you know, the small closet where we keep the food? I was sitting on the floor in the dark, eating a piece of cake.

Teacher: In the dark? In the closet? That’s true dedication, Tracy.

Tracy: I know! But then, my daughter walked by. She didn't see me, but she smelled the cake. She stopped, sniffed the air like a police dog, and said, "I smell vanilla... and secrets.”

Teacher: "I smell secrets!" That’s a great line for a movie. Did she catch you?

Tracy: She opened the door, looked down at me sitting on the floor with cake on my face, and just said, "Mom, I’m disappointed in you. Give me half.”

Teacher: (Laughs) Well, B1 students, being a parent means you never get to eat a whole cake by yourself. Never.

    Outro:
That is the end of our story. Good job!
Now, can you answer the three questions? Listen again if you need to.

  • Podcast Title: The "Boy vs. Girl" Survival Guide
    Host: Duncan
    Guest: Tracy
Topic: [Dialogue] Conversation about children’s behavior
Focus: Comparing/Contrasting, Descriptive Adverbs, and Childhood behavior.

    [Script]
Duncan: Welcome back to the podcast! Today is a very special episode because I am joined by my partner, Tracy. Tracy, how are you? Are you surviving the week?

Tracy: (Sighs) "Surviving" is exactly the right word. My house is currently a disaster zone. I have a son and a daughter, so it’s like living with two different types of weather. One is a thunderstorm, and the other is a hurricane.

Teacher: (Laughs) I understand completely. I have two boys, so my house is basically a constant wrestling match. Why is it that boys never just... sit? They are always moving, jumping, and running around!

Tracy: Exactly! My son thinks he is a professional stuntman. Last Tuesday, I walked into the living room, and he was standing on top of the bookshelf. I asked him, "What are you doing up there?" and he just looked at me and said, "I’m a mountain goat, Mom. Do you have any grass for me to eat?”

Teacher: A mountain goat! That’s hilarious. My boys don't climb bookshelves, but they do turn everything into a weapon. A spoon? That’s a sword. A pillow? That’s a bomb. Last night, they were "fighting" in the hallway, and I heard a loud CRASH. I ran out, and they had knocked over a giant lamp. I asked who did it, and they both pointed at the dog. We don't even have a dog, Tracy!

Tracy: (Laughs) They blamed a ghost dog! That’s classic. But you see, with my daughter, the trouble is different. She is the "Drama Queen." If her brother even looks at her favorite doll, she falls to the floor and cries like her heart is broken. She says, "Mom, he is destroying my soul!”

Teacher: "Destroying her soul?" Wow, that is very poetic for a kid!

Tracy: She is very dramatic. And the clothes! She changes her outfit five times a day. If there is one tiny spot of dirt on her dress, she acts like it’s a national emergency. She’ll say, "I can’t go to school like this! People will laugh at me!”

Teacher: My boys are the opposite. They would wear the same dirty shirt for a week if I let them. They think dirt is a "fashion choice.”

Tracy: (Laughs) So, listeners, the lesson is this: Boys break your furniture, but girls break your ears with all the talking and crying.

Teacher: It’s a tough choice, isn’t it? Let’s see if you were listening to our "struggle."

    OUTRO:
That is the end of our story. Good job!
Now, can you answer the three questions? Listen again if you need to.

    Host: Duncan
    Topic: Memories, Nature, and Emotions.
Focus: Past Continuous (I was walking...) and Descriptive Adjectives.

    [Script]
"For our episode today, let’s talk about the ocean. Do you remember the first time you saw the beach?

I remember it clearly. I was very small, maybe five years old. I was holding my mother’s hand as we walked over the sand. The sand was so hot! I felt like I was walking on fire. But then, we reached the water. The water was cool and salty.

I was standing at the edge of the ocean when a big wave came. I was terrified! I thought the ocean was trying to catch me. But my mom laughed and showed me how to jump over the waves.

I spent the whole afternoon building a sandcastle. I was trying to build the biggest castle in the world. I used shells for the windows and seaweed for the roof. But then, the tide came in. The water moved closer and closer, and suddenly... splash! My castle disappeared. I was a little sad, but my dad said, 'Don't worry, the ocean is just taking your castle back home.'

Now, I love the beach. It’s my favorite place to clear my head. The sound of the waves is like a song. When was the last time you felt the sand between your toes?"

    Topic: Animals, Directions, and Comparisons.
Focus: Superlatives (Tallest, heaviest) and "While" (doing two things at once).

    [Script]
"Welcome back! Today we are taking a trip to the Taipei Zoo. It is one of the largest zoos in Asia! Have you been there recently?

My favorite animal to visit is the giraffe. They are the tallest land animals in the world. Did you know their tongues are blue? It’s true! I like to stand there while eating an ice cream and just watch them eat leaves from the high trees.

Then, of course, there are the Pandas. Everyone loves the Pandas. They look so soft and lazy. Most of the time, they are just sleeping or eating bamboo. They lead a very relaxed life, don't they? I wish I could sleep and eat bamboo all day!

But the zoo can be a bit difficult. It is very big, and you have to walk a lot. Last time I went, I got lost near the tropical birds. I was looking at a colorful parrot while trying to read the map at the same time. I walked in a circle for twenty minutes!

Next time you go to the zoo, remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring a lot of water. Which animal is your favorite? The scary tigers or the funny monkeys?"

  • Podcast Title: The Magic of the Night Market
    Host: Duncan
Topic: Food, Senses, and Local Culture.
Focus: Sensory verbs (smell, taste, sound) and "Used to."

    [Script]
"Hi everyone! I’m Teacher Duncan. I have a question for you: Are you hungry? Because today, we are going to my favorite place in Taiwan—the Night Market!

When I first moved here, I was amazed. The night market is like a sensory explosion. First, the sounds. You hear the games, the shouting of the bosses—'Come look! Cheaper here!'—and the sound of food frying. Then, the smells. Some people hate the smell of stinky tofu, but I actually like it now! I 'used to' think it was strange, but now I think it smells delicious… not really.

My favorite thing to eat is sweet potato balls. They are crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. I also love the 'big sausage wrap small sausage.' Do you like that? It is so yummy and clever!

But the night market isn't just about food. It’s about the feeling of the community. You see families walking together, teenagers playing claw machines, and tourists looking confused. If you go to a night market this weekend, try to listen to the English around you. Sometimes you can hear tourists trying to order food in English. You should go help them! Imagine if you are tourist in another country. How would you feel if someone helped you? You would feel happy and grateful Am I right?

    Host: Duncan
Topic: Summer in Taiwan, Staying Cool, and Nature.
Focus: Comparative adjectives (Hotter, Wetter, Faster) and "Should/Shouldn't."

    [Script]
"Whew! Is it just me, or is it getting hot in here? Welcome back. Today we are talking about the upcoming summer.

    [Script]
In Taiwan, summer isn't just a season; it’s a challenge! It’s getting hotter every day. Pretty soon, the cicadas will start singing in the trees—you know that loud ZZZZZZ sound? That is the sound of summer.

I want to give you some advice for the Taiwan summer. First, you should always carry an umbrella. Not just for the rain, but for the sun! The sun in July and August is very strong. Second, you must drink a lot of water. I see many students drinking sweet bubble tea every day. I love bubble tea too, but water is better for your body when it’s 38 degrees outside!

My favorite summer activity is going to the East Coast. Have you been to Hualien or Taitung? The ocean there is so blue and deep. I like to stand in the water and feel the waves hit my legs. It makes me feel small and calm.

But be careful! Summer also means typhoon season. When a typhoon comes, we stay inside, eat instant noodles, and watch the wind blow. It’s a very 'Taiwan' feeling, isn't it?

What are your plans for the summer vacation? Are you going to go to a summer camp? Or are you going to stay in the air conditioning and read books? Whatever you do, try to stay cool and stay hydrated. See you in the next episode!"

"Hi students! We are talking about baseball again today, but today’s story is about a girl named May. May is twelve years old, and she has a dream. She doesn't want to play piano or violin—she wants to be a pitcher.

    [Script]
But May lives in a small town, and some people say, 'May, girls don't play baseball. You should play softball instead.' May just smiles and says, 'Watch me.'

Every morning at 6:00 AM, before school, May goes to the park. She has a target painted on a brick wall. Thump. Thump. Thump. She throws the ball 100 times every single day. Her arm gets tired. Sometimes it rains. Sometimes her friends are sleeping, but May is always practicing.

One day, the local team had a big tryout. May walked to the mound. The boys laughed. 'She’s too small,' they said. But when May threw the first ball, nobody laughed. It was a perfect strike. She didn't just have power; she had control.

May taught everyone a lesson that day. It doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl. It doesn't matter if you are small. If you have the dedication to practice when no one is watching, you can win. May is now the starting pitcher for her team. Next time you think something is 'too difficult,' think about May and her brick wall."

    OUTRO:
That is the end of our story. Good job!
Now, can you answer the three questions? Listen again if you need to.

    Host: Duncan
Topic: Opening Day, Teamwork, and Excitement.

    [Script]
    Hello! I am Duncan.
Welcome to our English story time.
The weather is getting warmer and spring is approaching! Basetball season is finally here!

    [Script]
In Taiwan, we love baseball. It is our national sport. Last night was the first game of the season, and I was so excited. I want to tell you about the feeling of a baseball stadium. First, when you walk in, you smell the food. You smell popcorn, grilled sausages, and cold drinks. Then, you see the grass. The grass is so green and perfectly cut. It looks like a carpet.

I remember my first baseball game when I was a kid. I had a big leather glove. I waited and waited, hoping for a 'foul ball' to fly into my hands. I didn't catch a ball that day, but I fell in love with the game.

Why do we love baseball? I think it’s because of the tension. The pitcher stands on the mound. He looks at the batter. Everything is quiet. Then... whoosh! He throws a fastball at 150 kilometers per hour! The batter swings, and the crowd goes wild.

Do you play baseball? Or maybe you like the CPBL (Chinese Professional Baseball League)? My favorite part of the game in Taiwan is the cheering. The fans dance, they sing, and they bang drums. It’s like a big party. If you are feeling bored this week, go watch a game. It is the best way to spend a spring afternoon."

  • Podcast Title: Big City, Big Changes
    Host: Duncan
    Guest: Jessica
Topic: Moving, Junior High, Anxiety, and Taichung City.

    [Script]
    Hello! I am Duncan.
Welcome to our English story time. I’m going to be playing Stephen today. Jessica is moving to Taichung and she’s going to share some feelings about moving. In this B1 dialogue, Jessica is going to be speaking a little fast, therefore, please listen carefully. You can also listen to the dialogue again if you didn’t catch everything. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Stephen: Hey Jessica! I saw the moving boxes at your house yesterday. Are you really leaving our small town next week?

Jessica: (Sighs) Yeah, it’s official, Stephen. My family is moving to Taichung. I’m supposed to be excited because it’s a big city with department stores and bubble tea everywhere, but honestly... I’m terrified.

Stephen: Terrified? Why? Taichung is cool! They have that huge science museum and the night markets. It's much more exciting than here.

Jessica: I know, I know. But the city isn't what scares me. It’s the school. Everyone says Junior High in Taichung is "Level 99" difficulty.

Stephen: Level 99? You mean like a video game?

Jessica: Exactly. In our small town, we all know each other. The teachers are kind, and I feel comfortable. But in Taichung, the schools are huge. I’ve heard the students there study until 10:00 PM every night. It’s so competitive.

Stephen: I heard that too. My cousin goes to school in Taichung, and he has like... ten different textbooks for one subject! But Jessica, you’re one of the smartest kids in our class. You always get the best grades in English.

Jessica: That’s the problem! Here, I’m "Smart Jessica." But in a big city school, maybe I’ll just be "Average Jessica." What if I can’t keep up? What if the math is too hard? I feel so anxious when I think about the first day.

Stephen: You know, it’s okay to feel anxious. It’s a huge transition. But think about the new things! You’ll meet new people, and you can join different clubs. Maybe a singing club or a dance team?

Jessica: I hope so. I’m also worried about making friends. Everyone in the city seems so... busy. Will they have time to talk to the girl from the small town?

Stephen: If they don't talk to you, they are crazy! You’re a great friend. And hey, we have the internet. You can call me every day and tell me how "difficult" the math is while I’m still here enjoying our quiet life.

Jessica: Thanks, Stephen. That makes me feel a bit better. I guess I’m just scared of the unknown. Taichung feels like a different world right now.

Stephen: Just remember, even in a big city, the sun rises the same way. You’ll find your place. Just don't forget us when you become a "Big City Girl.”

Jessica: Never! I’ll send you a box of famous Taichung Sun Cakes every month.

Stephen: Deal! Now, let’s go play one last game of UNO before you have to go pack your bags.

    OUTRO:
That is the end of our story. Good job!

Focus: "Likes/Dislikes," "Can/Can't," and sports vocabulary.

"Hi students! Welcome back. Today, I want to talk about my favorite season. Can you guess what it is? It is not winter... it is not fall... it is summer!

I love summer because I love the water. When it is 35 degrees outside in Taiwan, what do you do? I go to the swimming pool! Are you a good swimmer? I am... okay. I am not a professional, but I can swim across the pool.

My two boys are learning to swim right now. Every Saturday, we go to the pool. My oldest son is like a fish. He loves to dive under the water. But my youngest son is a little bit nervous. He says, 'Daddy, the water is too big!' I tell him, 'Don't worry, you have your life jacket and your goggles.' Do you wear goggles when you swim? I think goggles are very important so your eyes don't get red.

After swimming, we always eat something cold. My favorite summer snack is shaved ice with mango. Mangoes in Taiwan are the best in the world! They are sweet and yellow and delicious.

This summer, I want to learn a new hobby, too. Maybe I will learn how to surf, or maybe I will just learn how to make better iced coffee at home. What is your favorite summer activity? Do you like to go to the park, or do you like to stay inside with the air conditioner?

Summer is still a few months away, but I am already dreaming about the blue water and the cold mango ice. Let’s get ready for the heat together!"

Focus: Weather, clothing, and transportation vocabulary.

“Welcome to our English story time.”
"Hello everyone! Welcome to a very sunny episode of our podcast. How are you today? I am feeling very excited. Why? Because Spring Break is coming!

In Taiwan, the weather is changing. It is not very cold now. The sun is shining, the flowers are growing, and it is the perfect time for a vacation. Do you have plans for Spring Break?

I want to tell you about my plans. This Spring Break, I am going to travel to the mountains. I love the mountains because the air is fresh and the trees are beautiful. I am going to go with my family—my two boys and my wife. We are going to take a train. Taking the train is fun for kids because they can look out the window and see the rice fields and the ocean.

But, I have a problem. I don't know what to pack! Packing a suitcase is difficult in the spring. In the morning, it is cool, so I need a jacket. In the afternoon, it is hot, so I need a T-shirt. Luckily I have tons of Under Armour quick-dry T-shirts. These are amazing to wear when living in hot weather. My boys want to pack their toys, but I say, 'No! We only have one small suitcase!'

What about you? Are you going to go to the beach? Or maybe you are going to stay at home and play video games? Both are okay! The important thing is to relax and take a break from school. I hope you have a wonderful Spring Break. Don't forget to practice your English, even on vacation!"

That is the end of our story. Good job!

Welcome to our English story time. In this episode, I invited a student to record an epsidoe with me. She’s a B1 student. Let’s go.

Teacher: We are back with Lindsey! Now, Lindsey, I heard a rumor. I heard that you are a secret superstar. Is it true you like to sing?

Lindsey: It’s not a secret! I sing everywhere. In the shower, in the car, and definitely when I’m traveling.

Teacher: That’s amazing. If you could travel anywhere in the world to give a concert, where would you go?

Lindsey: Hmm... I think I’m going to go to Japan. I want to sing in Tokyo!

Teacher: Tokyo? Very cool. What kind of songs would you sing?

Lindsey: Only the happy ones. After the first day of school yesterday, everyone needs happy music.

Teacher: I agree. Can you give us a tiny sample? Just three notes?

    Lindsey: Sings….

Teacher: Welcome back to the podcast! I’m here with a very special guest today. Her name is Shani. Shani, how are you feeling today?

    Shani: Honestly? I’m exhausted.

Teacher: Exhausted? But Chinese New Year just finished! Didn't you relax?

Shani: Relax? No way! Yesterday was the first day of school. I had to wake up at 6:30 AM. I forgot how to use a pen. I think my brain is still on vacation.

Teacher: (Laughs) I know the feeling. My brain is also eating red envelopes and dumplings right now. Did you do anything fun during the break?

Shani: I traveled to Kaohsiung with my family. It was so warm! I ate so much street food that I think I grew two centimeters.

Teacher: Just two centimeters? That’s not bad. I think I grew two centimeters just from eating pineapple cakes!

Shani: (Giggles) At least you don't have math homework today, Teacher.

Teacher: That is true. Okay, let’s check if the listeners were paying attention!

    Outro:
That is the end of our story. Good job!
Now, can you answer the three questions? Listen again if you need to.

It is a sunny day. How’s the weather where you are? Here, it is hot and sunny. I am at the Summer Club with my brother, Edison.

The camp is very busy. Everyone is playing. Look! Over there, a girl is playing basketball. She is very tall and she can run very fast. Over here, a boy is playing with a frisbee. It is red and blue. Can you play with a frisbee? Yes, I can! It is very fun.

My brother and I always play together. We find a big tree and sit in the cool grass. I bring a ball and a book to the camp.

Oh no! Look at my clothes. They are not clean; they are very dirty because I played in the grass. But I am glad because I have many friends here.

Now, the sun is very hot. I am very thirsty. I need to find a drink. I have some fresh juice in my backpack. Do you have a drink?

Summer camp is great! We can dance, we can swim, and we can call our mother on the computer to say "I love camp!" I have an idea... you should come to the Summer Club next year! Goodbye, everyone!
