This June, it was my treat to interview Gwen Courbé of DogZen by Gwen, a fellow dog colleague, and long time friend. Gwen and I started at the beginning, like we usually do on this podcast and talked about her sensory dog garden, dogs and ethics, and the challenges of being a dog professional. I hope that you enjoy our conversation.

Gwen mentioned these references during the podcast:

On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals, a book by Turid Rugaas

The BHARCS School in India, founded by Sindhoor Pangal

and Gwen mentioned Galen Mythotherapy, specifically, the FOUNDATIONAL POSTURAL ANALYST COURSE.

In our May podcast, Adri Albertyn, our PATREON supporter and Diplomat, and I, talk about nose work and its benefits for dogs. Adri and her business partner run a dog nose work company called ‘Good Scents’ in South Africa, and Adri has plenty of education around this subject.

Adri mentioned these books during the podcast:

In our January podcast, Kirsty Falk, our co-director, and I, talk about dogs and ‘proprioception.’ A definition of this term is: ‘Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense its own position, movement, and actions in space without relying on visual input. It is often referred to as the ‘sixth sense’ and is essential for coordination, balance, and motor control.’ (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/proprioception and https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/proprioception). Our dog nerd meanderings and concrete visual examples provide a practical foundation for dog guardians to start trying this out, if they haven’t already.

I mentioned the ‘Ortodon Sensory Orthopaedic Foot Massage Floor Mat’ tool, in the podcast. I have provided a link to it here.

This December I have a lovely story to share with you - the story of ‘Purple Pup,’ a dog enrichment shop in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. When our family was in North Yorkshire, and thinking of moving to Scarborough,,we found Dianne Murphy-Rodgers. We were delighted to shop for treats and chews for our dogs at Dianne’s shop, Purple Pup. Later, my indoor sensory garden for dogs, Snuffl, moved two doors down from Purple Pup and Dianne and I collaborated and became close friends. This is the Purple Pup story.

Our very own Silke Strasser and I got together to have a casual chat about senior dogs and their special place in our lives. Silke, like many of us, has a senior dog, called Frida. Through deep observations and a strong bond with Friday, Silke has many noticing about this time in a dog’s life. We talked about our own dogs, and many of the ways we can make dogs’ lives better when they age.

This month our co-directors got together to talk about ‘co-regulation’ between dogs and humans. The podcast was inspired by Rose Waldrup and her IG feed where she explores hands on somatic touch and scientific proof of its benefits on the dog’s nervous system. None of us are experts or body work practitioners, and really only touched upon the very tiniest part of this subject. Apologies for my feverish dialogue, as I was sick during this podcast. Tanya hadn’t eaten dinner yet as she had just returned from her work in Moscow and it was 10pm her time. The next time we attempt to discuss this most important realm of dog health, we will be interviewing a professional.

Anita Kytomaa, of Woofs to Kittys is a trailblazer in the UK dog equipment and dog store market. She has always been a progressive advocate of healthy chews and food for dogs, but her Bare Dog harness is a unique and ethical choice for dog guardians in the UK and around the world. Bare Dog harnesses have plenty of choice in terms of colour and style, but their fit and comfortable style is what stands them alone in the UK Harness market - they simply don’t have to compete. I hope that you find our conversation illuminating.

Rosie Lowry, of Laid Back Dogs, is a wonderful person to interview, and I finally got the chance to do so. Her books, ‘Understanding the Silent Communication of Dogs,’ and’ ‘Tale of a Big Dog’ are full of lessons in a life with dogs. If you learn by reading real life stories, based on experience, these books are a must read.

We had technical difficulties with Rosie's WIFI, so you get the video version this month!

It's been a couple of years since Tanya and I have spoken on this podcast. I chat with her on a message app quite often, but there is nothing like having the time to sit down and find out what is happening in her life.

Tanya and I met in 2020, so our friendship is deep. It's an honour to have her as one of our four co-directors for the SLOW DOG MOVEMENT C.I.C. I hope that you enjoy and gain something from this informal podcast, whether it be new knowledge of Russian culture, or learning about dogs in a different way.

I was delighted when an email from Harriet Alexander, of ALL DOGS ARE GOOD, popped into my email inbox. I thought, ‘she’s back’ and I immediately wrote to her and asked her to come on the podcast. I have known Harriet for many years. We met through Pet Dog Trainers of Europe and through Winkie Spiers. Harriet is a practising dog behaviour consultant and is also an ‘ideas person’, highly creative and totally down to earth at the same time. I really hope that you enjoy this informal, sometimes candid catch up with one of my favourite dog professional colleagues and friends. I do apologise for any talking over each other, there was a lagin the Wi-Fi for us both.

This month my husband, Brett (Korteling), and I talk about moving and travelling with dogs, with a focus on trans-Atlantic travel. Brett has travelled twice from the UK to NorthAmerica and back with dogs, within the past two years and has many good tips and interesting stories to tell. If it wasn’t for the support of Brett, I wouldn’t be able to devote so much voluntary time towards the SLOW DOG MOVEMENT.

Brett mentioned Le Pet Express during the podcast.

To start the New Year, I thought it would be interesting to have a conversation with our new co-director, Kirsty Falk. Kirsty has been involved with the SLOW DOG MOVEMENT since 2021 and is an active admin in our FB group. She is a full-time, professional dog-walker and volunteers for AA Dog Rescue, based in Spain. Kirsty mentioned that there is a march, across the UK, this Saturday, the 1st February, 2025, to raise awareness for Podencos. I hope that you enjoy our very candid conversation!

In November and December, we will be speaking with Caroline Lewis about the fascinating topic of ‘deaf dogs.’ Caroline is a dog behaviour consultant and runs ‘Help at Hand Dog Training& Behaviour’ in the U.K. who specialises in deaf & blind dogs, rescue dogs, adolescent dogs, and now plight of the XL Bully. I have known Caroline as a fellow colleague, for years, but never really ‘got to know her.’ This podcast series has been an absolute gift, to learn about deaf dogs, and to slowly become friends with Caroline. We hope that you enjoy both podcast episodes. We will definitely be asking Caroline back next year.

Here is the extra information on ‘how dogs sense movement’ that Caroline mentioned during the talk:

‘Dogs can 'sense' movement up to 900 metres away (so just over half a mile), this can be slightly more heightened in deaf dogs because their other senses are more heightened. They can also sense electromagnetic fields which can guide them back home - one dog (will find the article) navigated itself back home over 200 miles and they think most of this was with electromagnetic fields from the earth. Also, dogscan smell up to/over 12 miles away. So, from this we can see that when a dog can't hear, or in fact see well, that is not actually a problem because their ability to 'sense' their environment is profound!’

And the research paper to go with it: https://www.livescience.com/dogs-sense-earth-magnetic-field.html

I also promised to include the article from Dr Conor Brady onsafely feeding raw bones:

https://dogsfirst.ie/how-to-feed-a-dog-bones/ AND the courses that Dr Nick Thompson offers on feeding raw bones to dogs and raw feeding: https://holisticvet.co.uk/index.php/videos/

I also mentioned a wonderful vet in Bristol, who does dental work, but couldn’t remember his name in the chat – and he is: Dr Martin Brice of https://www.emersonvet.co.uk/

This podcast is a conversation with Daniella and CierĂłn of The Forever Summer Project on Instagram, in the UK. Daniella and CierĂłn have both been working professionally with dogs for ten years and work in the Rescue Dog sector currently. I first reached out to them a couple of years ago, because I was so impressed with their feed, and wondered if they could help with ours! Their philosophy and messaging resonate with the Slow Dog Movement immensely. They also had anotherprofile called Radical Behaviour, which is not currently active, but that is a highly informative resource for dog behaviour nerds and neophytes alike!
