Join Carlette Patterson, CEO & Co-founder of Patterson Sports Ventures®, and Dr. Joan M Hunter, Lifestyle Medicine Board Certified Physician, to learn about how stress negatively impacts the microbiome, how to manage emotional eating when you feel stressed, and the importance of relationships to reduce stress.
Winning Strategies:
High stress levels, due to the bi-directional gut-brain axis connection, reduce biodiversity in the microbiome and high cortisol hormone levels can cause the gut lining to become damaged. Practice daily stress management such as meditation or gratitude journaling and nurture close friendships so you can help each other in times of stress. Manage emotional eating during times of stress and help reduce the strain on the gut by reaching for foods that are high in fiber and fatty acids such as a trail mix, fruit bowl, and stay hydrated with water.

Join Carlette Patterson, CEO & Co-founder of Patterson Sports Ventures®, and Dr. Joan M Hunter, Lifestyle Medicine Board Certified Physician, to learn about the impact of sleep on the microbiome and how to practice good sleep hygiene to ensure your body can rest and recover at night.
Winning Strategies:
Adults should aim to sleep 7-9 hours per night. Less sleep negatively impacts the biodiversity of our microbiome, affects the gut lining, and causes inflammation and illness as a result. Sleep is a 24-hour cycle where our daily habits set us up for great sleep at night including a calming night routine without screens, and a quiet, dark, and cold bedroom without distractions.

Winning Strategies:
Antibacterial soaps and cleaning products can negatively impact our gut microbiome. Avoid the ingredient triclosan and opt for more natural products such as vinegar and baking soda. Studies suggest that owning a pet is beneficial for our gut microbiome because we are exposed to more microbes in the dog’s hair, saliva, plus we spend more time outside.

Winning Strategies:The elimination diet has two phases. The first phase, elimination, is a ten-day minimum ‘season’ where you eliminate all foods that could be causing you problems including dairy, gluten, and added sugars. The second phase, reintroduction, is where you add these foods back into your diet one at a time, for three days at a time. The key is to stat up how you feel throughout this process so you can win your gut health and your life. Food allergies trigger an immune response including hives, swelling or nausea whereas food sensitivities are more common and can cause brain fog, bloating, and headaches.
