  • BRACE YOURSELVES BOOKSHELVERS... FOR THE APOCALYPSE COMETH!

Well that's not strictly true BUT what if it did? What if a cataclysmic event wiped us hoomans off the face of the earth and left our dogs to fend for themselves without us? What would happen??? This is the premise of the wonderful book "A Dog's World" written by returning guest Jessica Pierce and co-authored with Marc Bekoff. We always say that BFTBS is NOT a review show, it's a recommends show and Nat and Steve couldn't recommend this book enough. A fascinating topic and super clever premise that opens up a world of learning about our canid companions. Not only do we delve deep into this topic with Jessica herself, we also talk about our presence and experience at Crufts, sagittal crests, dog bed addiction and answers some bloomin' wonderful bookshelver questions. We also have a very special "Story Time With Steve" section at the end all about Steve's recent trip to Crete where he befriended a free roaming dog called Bella. Put it in your head dog lovers!

As well as all the usual segments we use to delve into Tam's book, Nat, Corrin and Steve also spend far too long discussing whether the eye is a part of the brain, Jay's best joke ever, the etymology of the phrase "your toast" and other standard "Barks from" madness. So pull up a chair, rub a dog and submerge your earholes.

Another returning guest this week at Barks from Headquarters! Corrin and Steve are joined by the amazing Andrew Hale to talk through LOADS and LOADS of great stuff.

  • Where the heck have we been Bookshelvers?

Well... It's fair to say we've been busy bees. Since we took over PACT it's been a joyus whirling dervish of learning, fun, content creation and teaching. We hope our hiatus hasn't left you audio lonely for top quality dog related pod fun?!

So we are back! and this week we are starting our Connecting Communities Series. The idea is based around our very first PACT in person Conference! Yep you heard us. The Bookshelf/PACT team are holding a conference this autumn on October 16th in Winchester and you're all invited. We have some fabulous speakers lined up and we wanted to give you a little taster of them all with a few podcasts to wet your appetites!

First up we have the awesome Suzanne Rogers who will be one of our keynote speakers giving tips for everyone in the canine care industry on how to communicate for greater success. This podcast is a real eye opener and is (in itself) full of great ideas to help us all out no matter what field we are in.

    Suzanne Facts:

Suzanne has worked in several very different roles that together have paved the way for being the co-director of HBCA. After graduation she worked in science publishing – initially as a science journalist and later managing several journals. In her spare time she re-qualified in animal behaviour and welfare and gained extensive practical experience with several organisations. She founded Learning About Animals through which she organised educational events and undertook consultancy projects. She is also active as an IAABC-certified horse behaviour consultant.

Through extensive travel to developing countries Suzanne gained interest in transport animals and in 2005 joined the Board of the World Association for Transport Animal Welfare and Studies (TAWS). She is co-founder and Programmes Director of Change For Animals Foundation (CFAF), co-founder and Trustee of the Aquarium Welfare Association and Trustee of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA).

In 2007, she became the Programmes Manager of the Companion Animal Unit at WSPA (now World Animal Protection). She managed several dog population and working equine programmes. The role was to develop and test participatory methodologies – working with communities to change the way they manage and care for their animals. Suzanne led the move away from a heavy focus on mobile clinics towards prevention through participatory approaches. To reflect the broad applicability of the approach she became the Technical Advisor for Human Behaviour Change Programmes. Since 2011, Suzanne has worked as an international consultant for animal welfare and human behaviour change. In 2016, she co-founded Human Behaviour Change for Animals CIC with Jo and the rest is history

  • WE ARE BACK BOOKSHELVERS!

Corrin and Steve have been swaning (pun intended) around in Swanage for a week and are now back refreshed and ready for another "Off The Shelf" This time Nat, Corrin and Steve talk to the wonderful Gemma Hodson all about her passion in canine behaviour and movement. This is an often overlooked part of the whole behaviour picture and we think you'll find our talk really eye opening. As well as all the the dog geek outs you'd expect we also talk a whole lot about cheesecakes1, how Steve once had crabs (no not like that) and why Corrin and Nat are now required by podcast law to be present on the intros.

Take a deep breath and delve on in!

    Gemma Facts

Gemma has lived a life with dogs of various breeds growing up in a house full of show dogs, but initially studied at Hartpury College for a career with horses going on to work at show jumping and event yards along with hydrotherapy centres. In the early 2000’s she started growing an interest in how pain affects movement & behaviour after one of her own horses developed gastric ulcers, this then became an obsession when returning to her love of dogs and attending dog classes could see dogs from an early age already experiencing difficulties.

Wanting to expand on her observational skills she trained with Sarah Fisher doing TTouch & ACE, before deepening her knowledge of canine anatomy, physiology & movement alongside massage and rehabilitation with ICAT & the OCN in London & is a qualified behaviour practitioner with the ISCP.
Gemma combines her passion for canine behaviour and movement to help dog guardians get to the bottom of their dog’s problematic behaviours using gait & posture analysis to shine a light on potential issues, she is often called in by other canine
professionals to work with their clients for additional support and advice.
More recently Gemma has launched her Dynamic Dog Practitioner Programme where she teaches other dog trainers and behaviourist to spot the signs of discomfort in dogs that are linked to behaviour problems, and has been ask to be a Canine Arthritis Management Advisor by the founder of CAM, Hannah Capon.

  • DAGNABBIT (Or should we say DOGNABBIT) BOOKSHELVERS!

Back with ANOTHER stonkingly canine-tastic mind tickler of an episode for you! Just in time to cure those Monday blues...

This week Steve & Nat are joined by the wonderful Karen London to talk all about her fabulous book Treat Everyone Like a Dog. As you can expect there is a whole load of topics and techniques to unpack on our journey to become better at employing the tactics we use with dogs upon our fellow humans. That being said though we should be the blooming experts right? Lets find out.

    Karen Facts

Karen B. London, Ph.D. is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist and Certified
Professional Dog Trainer who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of serious
behavior problems in domestic dogs. She began working with dogs in 1997, and has
spent years working with clients in one-on-one consultations in addition to teaching
group training classes, and giving seminars about canine ethology for trainers,
veterinary and shelter staff, and the public.

After graduation, Karen decided to switch to working with dogs. It was a natural
outcome of her love for dogs in her personal life, and her scientific interest in species
interactions and aggressive behavior in her professional life. She has enjoyed the
change to becoming a dog behaviorist and trainer as dogs are easier to work with and
less aggressive than the wasps she knows and loves.

Karen is an award-winning author of six books on dog training and behavior, five of
them co-authored with her mentor, Patricia B. McConnell, PhD. She blogs for
TheBark.com and also writes the animal column, The London Zoo, for the Arizona Daily

  • Hey Hey Hey BOOKSHELVERS!

Fancy another dive into the incredible world of dogs? Thought so.

This week we have a stonker of an interview for you with the amazing Dr Carri Westgarth. Carri's new book “The Happy Dog Owner” gets released this week and it’s a winner (so go ahead and get yourself a pre order)!

This one is packed full of WOW moments and was another case of wishing we had another hour to talk to Carri.

Fitting this one in quickly so Carri could promote the up-coming release this was one of the only times that Steve didn’t get to read the book which, as you’ll hear, he is very upset about 😉. For that reason we have put this out as a long form interview rather than a “Book Review Episode”. Fear not however as you will still get a brain full of doggy goodness as usual.

    Dr Carri Facts!

Dr Carri Westgarth is senior lecturer in human animal interaction at the University of Liverpool and a full member of The Association Of Pet Behaviour Councillors (APBC). Her research has been featured in the Guardian, The New York Times and New Scientist and she has regularly shared her expertise on national TV and radio. Dr Westgarth has spent 15 years conducting scientific research into how people interact with their dogs, and the positive and negative impacts on their health they occur as a result. She has helped hundreds of dogs and their owners, match prospective owners with homeless dogs and new puppies, taught obedience and tricks, counselled owners through dealing with problematic behaviours such as aggression and trained official assistance dogs to work with handlers with disabilities.

Back with all the verve of stalking Ridgeback and (of course) back with another banger!

On this Off The Shelf episode Corrin, Nat and Steve get to virtually sit down and catch up with their long time friend & all round top human Karen Murray. Karen helped (and continues to help) us all learn to run our businesses because, guess what, we were not that great at it at the beginning.. So we thought it would be great to have her on the show to talk all things business. Karen also answers some of the Bookshelvers questions which were posted via the facebook page.

Known to us as "Big K" she has been a constant source of knowledge and inspiration so sit back and suck it up!
