A young preschool boy was struck by a car while backing out of his driveway the day prior and had passed away. He was 5-years-old.
The news shook me to my core.
As I watched my little guy running back and forth in the hallway in front of me, tears filled my eyes imagining the pain his mother is currently going through. A life taken too soon as a result of a tragic accident that maybe could have been prevented.
Today I have some concrete tips for you to move forward for safety of you, your kiddos, and those around.
I want to dedicate this episode of Behavior Buff to the our girls schoolmate and his grieving family by bringing to mind to topic of driveway safety as there are some crucial behaviors you and your children can put in place to prevent a tragedy like this from striking your home.

What does that even mean Ty?!
HANGRY. Hungry + Angry.One of the first things that I learned in graduate school was the importance of eliminating any biological variables before addressing challenging behaviors. If the body is not getting the fuel and recovery it needs, behaviors are naturally going to be effected.
Another base principle of applied behavior analysis is the practice of parsimony.
Parsimony is the practice of ruling out simple explanations before diving deeper into the complex and complicated.
I use these two base principles every time I work with a school or family on helping change the behavior of their kiddos.
Before I even start any EXTERNAL behavioral assessment or make any behavioral recommendations. I always do my best to check off any biological variables that maybe causing issues internally. Some of those issues could be hunger, thirst, illnesses, constipation, allergies, sleep, and lack of physical activity. Out of all of those, three need to occur every day and CAN be under our control if we pay enough attention to how much our children are getting. Those three are, water intake - 1 oz per year of age up to 8, proper food intake - try and manage the blood sugar spikes and crashes by eating a balanced diet, and the amount of sleep - 9-11 hours for our school agers. -
Recently; I read about a group of parents, going to a school and demanding that the school needs more discipline!
It sparked this podcast-Why More Discipline is NOT the Answer.
"My kids are out of control, they are SO naughty and disrespectful. We've tried timeouts, taking toys away, losing activities and privileges that they love to do, yelling at them, we've seriously tried everything!"
Or maybe you have seen kids acting out at a restaurant and you think WOW those kids need more discipline. Or you hear someone say that about your own kids.

Time Out's revisited!
To Note this Episode:
-Time outs usually don’t work because they the time IN isn't preferred.
-The second reason is because it takes a certain level of cooperation.
-Time outs are used as a tool when the kid needs to be removed from the current environment in order to start calming down.
-Time outs should be used to only make sure they are being safe to themselves, or people around them.
-Time outs should NOT be used to rely on the manage behavior, it should be a last resort, not a first.
-This goes for any type of punishment really.
Discipline/punishment is to be used when you have tried over and over and over again until you are so sick of positive praise and its just not working or its not enough.
We hit on the 90/10 Rule, and go over our behavior bank account analogy again.

Daniel Patterson is talking all things teens.
But the cool part about this episode is we had a ton of takeaways to start and implement ourselves, and we don't have any teenagers yet.
His advice and knowledge in the parenting world is insane, and he really brought to light some impactful things for us as well to work on.
When I asked him how might you change your child's behavior around social media, video games, and screens; his answer- "Be the Example."

Raise your hand if you've had your share of bedtime struggles?
From a baby not sleeping. To a preschooler getting up to go potty, ask to sleep in your bed, or maybe they just creep and make their way into your bed without you even knowing. Maybe you feel like you have to lay next to them, rub their back, read 50 stories, sing songs, bribe to get them to brush their teeth, and 2.5 hours later- you're a puddle on the couch because they FINALLY went to bed, only to hear little feet run into your room and scare the living crap out of you when they wake you up with their face 2 inches from you saying they can't sleep and ask if they can be in your bed with you.Then nobody gets good sleep.
Unless you co-sleep, and that’s your thing, and you feel you get amazing sleep with your children in your bed. Power on to you. This is not us.
