We go deep on perhaps the most controversial Animal Collective album, Danse Manatee. A product of the band's burgeoning live act, Danse was made by the same trio that created Merriweather Post Pavilion and Painting With. Beloved by some, reviled by others, this record set the tone for the group's modus operandi going forward, one characterized by experimentation, collaboration, and the relentless desire to create.
Also discussed: Geologist's newly announced solo album, the end of Pitchfork Fest, and of course, Bonefish Rec's.
Where does Danse rank for you? What's your favorite track?

Christian and Justin log on with one half of the Jokermen podcast, Mr. Ian Grant, to revisit Panda Bear’s solo album TOMBOY (14:55). One of the most hyped albums of the 20th century, Tomboy saw our guy Noah drop the soupy, lo-fi samples of Person Pitch for something more direct, ethereal and darker than its predecessor.
Also discussed: The upcoming Sung Tongs live album, the new segment Bonefish Recommends, Tomboy as the twilight of the blog rock era, 2011, and of course, The Beach Boys. Check out Jokermen’s latest season dedicated to The Beach Boys, it rules.

Two decades ago today, Animal Collective released their fifth album, a collection of "tongue songs" that proved to be a massive vibe shift and level-up that solidified the band's direction and put them on the cultural map.
This week, Christian and Justin go deep on Avey Tare and Panda Bear's enduring masterwork Sung Tongs, the primordial siren song of innocence, friendship, love and peace. They discuss the evolution of this era of songs, the music of 2004, iconic Youtube clips, letting go, and which Outkast song is a spiritual cousin to the album. Can you believe this album is as far away from 2024 as 1984 was to 2004? 🤯 What are some of your favorite moments? Do you think they recorded a studio version of Covered in Frogs?

The album that made lots of millennials go buy a sampler, Person Pitch might be the most influential album in the Animal Collective universe. Released 17 years ago, it’s a swampy zoo of sounds that mixed hip hop sampling techniques with 60s pop vocals to make something uniquely 21st century. Christian and Justin talk about the primitive, revolutionary nature of the Panda Bear solo record, its samples, and how it’s maybe not even his best album? The boys also chat a tad about the new Vampire Weekend record, Only God Was Above Us.

Christian and Justin chat with founding Gang Gang Dance member Brian DeGraw (13:04) about the early 00s experimental scene in New York City that included groups like Animal Collective and Black Dice—an alternate history of Meet Me in the Bathroom.
They discuss moving from DC to NYC in '98, being a Manhattan band in a Brooklyn scene, feeling unattached to solo work, piano playing as meditation, and writing music for film. This episode includes snippets of unreleased solo music from DeGraw.
Other topics include record-breaking drum circles, cruise ship concerts during a solar eclipse, and how a freak tragedy years ago birthed a well of creativity for Brian and his friends.
Prior to the interview, the boys discuss Shabaka's new single featuring Floating Points and Laraaji, which Animal Collective record would work as a Broadway stage adaptation, what the AC boys are up to at the moment, and more.
