  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 19 of Buddy’s Buddies! This is part 2 of the ‘Margate Voices’ series, which is a collabo between myself and the Margate Mercury - and also, a new episode of Buddy’s Buddies which in itself, in current times, is a monumental occasion for all kinds of reasons, so there are many reasons to rejoice!

Lucy, the editor of Margate Mercury had an idea of a way to combine forces, whereby the format of the podcast would be the same as always but the guests would be in a somewhat different vein to usual. In this case, as a follow up to the previous edition with Cyril, she connected me with Carla. Through Carla it was also possible to meet and chat to her mum Gloria, which was also a true treat.

What follows is a really sweet chat between me, Carla and Gloria, which took place at Olby’s (massive thanks to Eli & the gang there who, as always, managed to make a perfectly safe and secure scenario in which to get things done) late in August. Gloria is from Trinidad and came to the UK in the 60s, and I feel like there’s a podcast series in itself waiting to happen with that whole story - we barely even scratched the surface there but I hope we get to meet up again and go further into it all. Carla was also excellent, and it was really fascinating to hear how she’s been getting on over the past half a year through the chaos as someone in the education system. We also touched on the Black Lives Matter movement and events through 2020 to hear their unique perspectives on it all, and covered a good amount of ground between us all! No spoilers as I just want you to hear the whole thing and just take an hour or two away from where you are now to get lost in a lovely chat with two engaging, sweet and truly fascinating guests. I really do wanna get the back for round 2 - we’ve only just begun! Please enjoy Carla and Gloria, Thanet’s finest!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 18 of Buddy’s Buddies! This week I am joined by a guest who is technically living in the past… Can you imagine such a thing? No seriously he’s like 7 hours behind us. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome all the way from San Bruno USA, producer CONTROLLER 7 (aka Tommy)!

    * Note - I decided to use a weird old mic for the intro, which is why it sounds kinda freaky on the intro and outro parts... Just wanted to give it a shot!

    ––––– PART 2 of 2 –––––

He’s been a pal of mine for around 20 years by now, and I’ve been a fan all the along. His music is, for ease of comparison, like ‘Endtroducing’ era DJ Shadow, mixed with a lot of LA sunshine and psychedelic sample sources but with those gorgeous drums. Ugh. Love em. Anyway I’ve been flexing with some online recording action of late, trying to prepare myself for the new normal and all, and I decided to finally SPEAK to my friend of 20 years - so you hear the first moment we do that! It’s wild. I also go into some detail about his music and try and set some context for what he’s been doing over the years in a longer intro than usual - it’s not a self indulgent ramble, honestly. I really wanted to try and set the scene just so you have a bit of background on Tommy and it’s not just some random dude I’m chatting with.

We get into the big stuff, the life stuff, the weirdness of making music, where the inspiration comes from, the process, how we’re handling this current era, music biz thoughts, his new project with rapper Mestizo called ‘Couch’, and loads more - so much more that I split it into two parts! So thank you ever so much for being part of it and listening, and know that you are appreciated and, yes, loved. Now go listen you some Controller 7.

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Greetings to you wherever you are right now, at this current moment in time and, well, history.

It’s been quite the fortnight and it’s hard to believe how much has gone on since we last spoke… Well, what with said amount having happened, and without me having to bring you up to speed on it all, I truly appreciate your ears and attention, and whether or not you stick with me for the whole episode or dip in and out, whatever your listening situation, know that I’m very grateful and that your presence is most certainly noted. THANK YOU XXX

NOW! What we have here is a collection of a few voice memos and recordings sent in by some listeners and friends - mine and yours, or if not yours already, NOW yours - which go into how things have changed, what some people are doing out there, or ways to cope and stay afloat with it all. I’m so happy that there were a few responses and I asked everyone at a weird time, JUST on the cusp of the lockdown so at that point it was very much up in the air as to what we were all doing or supposed to be doing. Now we’re like 2 weeks in so I think I speak for us all when I say WE GOT THIS.

So please enjoy some lovely dispatches from some lovely people who you can catch up with here:

    Keith Clarke!Morgan Gleave!Jo Miller! (and CovidCalm.org)Nadean Foster!Hannah Rzysko!Echo & Winter!

…and please feel free to submit any and all diary entries and your own dispatches to me here on this email:

    [email protected]

Thanks so much everyone. At risk of drifting away from the point and talking about Tiger King, let’s just dip into this one and hear from some lovely people from around the area and beyond.

Be well, be positive, stick with it and be in touch. We’ll all be good okay?

Nothing but love ///// Buddy XXX

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Greetings to you wherever you are right now, at this current moment in time and, well, history.

I trust you’re doing as good as can be expected - salutes to you, and huge love in abundance. I know this sounds like a vague catch-all thing to say but I mean it. I hope you’re doing alright.

This episode is a bit different. It’s a solo episode, but in many ways, I’m merely setting the stage for YOU to be the guest. Here’s the plan… So in Margate (and Thanet on the whole), there has been a real sense of amazing community spirit in this unprecedented time. I feel like we haven’t been through something like this and we don’t know the parameters, but within that chaos, there are some incredible examples of kindness and community assistance, fuelled by thoughtful and considerate acts which have really made me smile.

What I want to do with THIS episode then, is hear from YOU. If you are a business in Thanet, record a voice memo and email it to me at:

    [email protected]

Let me know who you are, what you might be doing and how it all works, and if you’re feeling up for it, how YOU’RE doing / coping / any recommendations, whatever you like.

BUT - this is also open to anyone who wants to chime in. Please do. I really want you to. Let’s treat this like an audio diary. Maybe even therapy? I don’t know. But I do know that in a time of isolation and distancing, we gotta connect and let each other know where we’re at.

If possible, if you can keep it to like 3-5 minutes or so that’d be mad helpful. I’ll be editing so don’t worry if you don’t get it spot on - just get it done and sent! Leave the rest to me.

We’ll see what happens. But please do it. I’m so excited to see and hear the results. I’ll assemble them soon as I can and soon as I have a good amount, as I know that in terms of businesses and shops, the situation might change so I’ll do my best.

Alright. Stay safe as you can. Drink water. Take time to think about other stuff. Thank you so much folks, I really hope we can get this voice memo thing to work out! Bigups and salutes X

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 15 of Buddy’s Buddies! A VERY special edition at that - this is part 1 of the ‘Margate Voices’ series, which is a collabo between myself and the Margate Mercury!

Lucy, the editor of Margate Mercury had an idea of a way to combine forces, whereby the format of the podcast would be the same as always but the guests would be in a somewhat different vein to usual. In this case, she had an idea of connecting me with this guy called Cyril - she gave me a few key details which sounded so fascinating, and we had a brief meet to see about fixing a time to record, and BOOM - the rest was mine, and now YOURS to find out!

So what follows is a lovely chat which I was lucky to be a part of, detailing Cyril’s crazy journey from his life in Zambia (living in a town called ‘Broken Hill’ aka Kabwe), to his mechanic leanings and then to his journey to Margate, on a flight with a few quid in his pocket… The rest is yours to uncover, and I don’t want to give you all the details because it’s so much more rewarding to find out for yourself now isn’t it?! I really hope you like it - Cyril’s a lovely fellow and his cups of tea are immaculate, take it from me. I’ll get a few links up here too to give you some more points of reference. In the meantime though, please take some time to hear from Mister Cyril Wilfred Wilson!

SEMI SPOILER THOUGH - this episode is released, somewhat co-incidentally, on the 4th anniversary of his liver transplant to the day. It felt significant. X

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 14 of Buddy’s Buddies!

Enough about that - how are YOU? No, really? And how much? You are KIDDING. Well I must say I’m lost for words. I didn’t expect that. I mean I’d better get on with this episode but we’ll get back to this okay?

Bless your heart for checking in folks, it’s a true pleasure to find you here. Much obliged. You are for SURE going to adore this one and I’m so excited to be able to present it to you, as it’s someone who I’ve been a legit card-carrying fan of since way back in the 00’s. If you haven’t caught him on record or in person at a show, you’ve surely heard his works on the big and marginally smaller screens - ladies and gentlemen, please be loud in welcoming ADEM ILHAN to the episode!

You may know him as Adem of course, and I’m sure more than a few of you will be fortunate enough to have some of his music in your collections (digital or physical), and ALSO you might be familiar with his earlier work in a band called Fridge (alongside Kieran aka Four Tet and Sam). If more bells need to be rang, perhaps you’ve seen the films ‘Yesterday’ or ‘In The Loop’, or partaken in the very awesome HBO series ‘Avenue 5’. If not, my friends, may I insist you avail yourself of some of the above at your nearest convenience! At any rate - familiar or not - it was a true honour to join Adem for a chunk of time in the homestead to get in deep on the subject of songwriting and lyrics, band days, production perspective, scoring for screen, Margate life (sorry, MARG8 LYF), breakthroughs, shaking everything up and the broader subject of “hopeful melancholy”. So much to be enjoyed here and certainly a perfect intro to a beautiful musician and truly lovely human. Please, share and love!

Welcome to episode 13 of Buddy’s Buddies!

I know you well enough by now to trust that ALL IS WELL. Let us BEGIN…

Thank you ever so kindly for checking in with ya boy for episode 13! What a pleasure to have you here for a true smash of an episode! My guest this time round is someone who, even if you don’t know him by face, for sure you will know him by the trail of amazing signs painted in Margate! Of course - this is assuming you’ve visited these fair streets and inhabited the town’s various establishments, but there’s no reason why you wouldn’t have seen his Instagram profile, so it is possible that even non-Margate folks will know what time it is…

ALL THIS BEING SAID! It’s always a great treat to have a conversation with someone who really know the ins and outs of their craft, from history to present, and I really got a buzz out of finding out more about the techniques and processes which often go unseen and unfortunately unnoticed. Well it’s time to redress the balance and give the artist some shine! Expect to hear all manner of goodness from how to manage peak and off-peak times, his debut up a ladder, fitches and pounces, history local and not so much so, wabi sabi, just everything yo! Listen and enjoy - it’s proper fascinating stuff. Follow him post-haste!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 12 of Buddy’s Buddies!

On the really, I hope all is marvellous with y’all. Let’s GOWWW…

Thanks ever so much for catching up with Buddy’s Buddies! What a treat to have you back aboard. Those two weeks totally make the heart grow fonder right? Well, much has happened and I hope all has been going good with you and yours. It’s a cold cold world out there at the moment and certainly frosty, but we’re gonna make it through those bittersweet January blues together. OKAY? Okay. So with that in mind, let us get immediately into this glorious episode with the maker of Goddesses and master ceramicist herself, CHARLIE RUSSELL!

I say it in the intro but we did record a podcast a little while back in 2019, which was pure gold and thoroughly enjoyable but totally nuts and we didn’t really talk about Charlie’s work - we got delightfully caught up in a mystical and magical world of madness, so THIS time we were determined to focus, keep the train on track and keep it locked, folks. And you can trust that in this one, we really got some proper nuggets and gems out of it which will surely endear you to Charlie’s world and serve as an ideal companion to her work if you haven’t met her before. I am a card carrying fan of her and her work, and it’ll take a quick scan through her Instagram for you to feel the same so listen, enjoy, and soak in the good vibes from the Charlie Russell studio. ENJOY!

Welcome to episode 11 of Buddy’s Buddies!

WELCOME TO 2020 THOUGH! Happy new year to you and you and ESPECIALLY you! May it be all you wish it to be.

Even though that lil' intermission back there was only a few weeks, it truly seems like months and months... I hope the festivities were grand if you engaged in them, and if not, all good too - I trust you are have a decent start to 2020 thus far and your everyday is going as great as we all hope. I am back and ready to go with SEASON 2 yo, and I'm ever so pleased to have you here with me and joining in once more for the podcast - and this time I'm doing things slightly different in having a non-Margatian up in guest seat! Every now and then I'm going to try and do this, as it's cool to mix things up a bit I reckon - especially when it's someone like my good friend Keith Clark!

Keith is an astonishing cross-stitcher, who's been in the game for a good while and basically turning into a fully fledged insane genius with it. He's cross stitched the Fresh Prince, the London Underground, a Beastie Boys infographic, the Strange Famous crew, Elvis, and just innumerable others AS WELL AS ME for heck's sake! Yes indeed, Keith is a crazy guy with it but a lovely one too and certainly a very calm, collected individual who will most definitely inspire you to pick up a needle and start things up yourself. We get into so much here, including his own stitch-based protests, other heavy hitters in the game, how you can start and the process involved, references, his life spent living on a boat, music, podcasts and a bunch of other ace gossip. It was a real treat to chat with him back in Summer 2019 and here are the results - I very much hope you enjoy and thanks for returning to join me in welcoming more Buddy's Buddies! 2020 YO! Let's do the damn thing...!!!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 10 of Buddy’s Buddies!

You’re doing good. I’m doing good. LET’S GO!

THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING this podcast get together. Your presence is gratefully appreciated. Or is it ‘graciously’? Never fully figured that out. In any regard, bigup yerselves and thanks for listening! Ladies and gentlemen, let me ask you a question. What you know about the Tom Thumb Theatre? Hmm? OH REALLY?!? Well prepare to know MUCH MORE about it, because here is a proper nice chat with the owners themselves - or as they would call themselves, ‘Custodians’. I love that. And as you’ll hear, this humble but extremely proud Margate treasure of a venue is full of nothing but great vibes from the main room to the bar. I’m happy to say I’ve seen a good few shows here, even DJ’d there a while back, and it’s just great - the interior decor is perfect, and the size and intimacy is just impossible not to fall in love with. If you haven’t been and you’re headed down this way, oh by gawd you MUST come through and visit.

We get into tons here, including the backgrounds of Alex and Sara and their origin stories, the path to becoming the custodians, theatre in general, the spirit of the building and the history, audiences, age groups, help along the way and where things can go from here. It’s a true treat and you’ll love em - such great people and I’m so happy to have talked to them both in the middle of the theatre room itself! There HAS to be better name than ‘theatre room’. Maybe just ‘theatre’ would suffice. Okay let me ponder on that while you listen - OH - important news too about the podcast enclosed within! Basically this episode wraps up season 1 of the podcast, but I’ll back early new year with a ton more goodness - this way everyone gets a breather, and a chance to catch up. I think this will work nicely, and we’ll pick things up again in very early 2020 okay? It’ll be worth it, I promise. There’s a LOT of good stuff going on… Huge love for every minute listened y’all, thank you incredibly - updates will happen so keep checking in! ENJOY THE EPISODE AND PRIOR ONES TOO IF YOU MISSED EM!!!!

Welcome to episode 9 of Buddy’s Buddies!

I trust you are great! I also assume that you are great. Don't let me down now...

A proper salute to you all from here in the BP labs, what a treat to have you back! Thanks so much for joining... I'm so happy to unveil this chat this week, it was a great one - I've known Bri and Gaz for something around a year, maybe more but not a ton of time, and in that time I've been so happy to find out more and more about the creative world in which they live and - well - create! Their most recent work is the gorgeous stage show 'Parakeet', heavy on the music and very full of positive vibes and inspiring messages but with a proper punk aesthetic and really ace message running through it. But they are responsible for a huge amount more, and oh good heavens above you are about to hear all about it...

So we get into all things Parakeet, which involves the initial stages of it right up to the Edinburgh run, all things My Beautiful Black Dog (their previous show) and the physical fuel which made it burn so brightly, as well as some really nice forward thinking business about education, art and the arts, culture, music influences and lifestyles, looking after one another on a small and larger scale, process, mental wellbeing, origins, young folk, politics (not too much, you're safe!) and so much more. I refuse to spoil it! Just get in there and enjoy yourself eh? YOU SHALL! Get to love Bri and Gaz!

How in the world are you? Wonderful! Let’s get going eh…?

So happy to see you again this week. Thank you ever so kindly for tuning in. YES YOU TUNE INTO PODCASTS. With that out of the way - let me get you better acquainted with today’s episode! I’m delighted to be joined by the man behind Jakl and Margate Vocal Studio, and founder of the Social Singing Choir - it’s Hughie Gavin! We had an awesome chat in his super plush studio down there in inner-most Margate, amongst the gorgeous guitars, beautiful piano and sweet-smelling natural oil diffuser, and not only that, he was kind enough to bless us with a live performance too! It was so lovely, a true one-take heartbreaker right there which you will hear at the end of the podcast so stick around won’t ya!

We get into loads of things here, including his origin story and that of the nom-de-plume Jakl itself, how he started the Social Singing Choir, what goes in the labs there at the Margate Vocal Studio, influences, finding his voice and unlocking the experiences that he could weave into his songwriting, collaborations with Moshi Moshi and Faultline among many others, parents and how his father showed him some of the ropes in the business and in performance and a WHOLE LOAD MORE! Ladies and gentlemen - please welcome and enjoy Mr Hughie Gavin!

Welcome to episode 7 of Buddy’s Buddies!

You good? Marvellous! Then let’s begin…

Powerful treats for you this week, by way of a really nice chat with the woman behind the place I’ve decided to call the constantly evolving cathedral of creativity… The Joseph Wales Studios here in Margate - Dane Hill to be exact - it’s Heidi Rogers! I’ve known Heidi for a year or so, from DJing at a few of the makers markets there (one of the MANY uses of the space!) and she’s always been a really friendly figure in the Margate scene. As you’ll hear, she loves being around artists and being involved in providing the space for artists to present their work, which is so huge - I loved hearing about the other side of art, the side of presenting it and facilitating the requirements of an exhibition. But Joseph Wales isn’t only an exhibition space, it’s a studio space and so much more - lord only knows how she manages to get so much use of the building but it’s a real treat to behold. There is so much potential inside and so many ways to use the areas in there, so it’s no surprise that it’s a destination spot for local artists and makers.

Of course on top of all the Joseph Wales talk, you’ll hear about Heidi’s background and how it enriched her current position in the studios, and a bunch of awesome historical goodness too - the building has been through a LOT and we get to hear it all. I’m constantly surprised at these incredible nuggets of history that keep cropping up, it’s so exciting. So yeah - tons to cram into just shy of an hour so ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy the wonderful Heidi!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 6 of Buddy’s Buddies!

Good day to you all - thank you ever so kindly for joining!

Ladies and gentlemen, a goody for you this week… I’ve known Ollie for a while here in Margate, and all the while he’s been working super hard on the AEE project from crowd funding to initiating sessions for young people to create amazing work, and alongside Sarah and Kim, AEE has become an ultra positive shining ray of light there on Northdown Road for creative youths here in Margate to engage in. It’s so important that they have a chance to realise their creativity and skill in a place like this, which works on finding their strengths and interests, while providing an equal footing and agency in their own paths.

You’ll hear it all, from how it started to where it was to where it is today, and Ollie is a great voice to talk about it all - you can hear that enthusiasm and spark, and pure confidence in the project which is really coming into its own. It’s still young but already they’ve helped a huge amount of young people in the Kent area find their voices and make music, artwork and film which has then been released to the world. Really exciting stuff. I hope you enjoy this one - thanks as always, hope you dig!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 5 of Buddy’s Buddies!

Thanks for joining me again - truly lovely to see you. Merry Friday to you all!

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a pleasure to introduce a glorious chat with the multi-talented soundwave wrangler and good vibes initiator JO MILLER of SOLASTA SOUNDS! I’ve been a firm fan ever since my first sound bath a good couple of years ago, when I didn’t even know what I was getting into by attending a sound bath - to say I was extremely pleasantly surprised is a powerful understatement… I’ve been involved in sound activities for a few decades now and this was definitely among my favourite. But that’s not where Jo’s expertise start and finish by any means!

I’d been wanting to talk to Jo for ages, especially as she’s so heavily involved in sounds and the more restorative aspects of it. I’m intimately familiar with bobbing my head and altering my pace as a pedestrian when listening to various types of music (or indeed slowing down to halt on the more ambient stuff), but I don’t think I’d ever really stopped to think about what was happening from the neo-cortex to the limbic system to the brain stem and onward… Well, we proper got into it here and it was totally fascinating - so much so that I must have dropped several questions in the smash-grab of my mind when I was reaching quickly for what to ask next…! There’s so much involved, and Jo breaks down everything from origins, her history with sound, vibrations and the actual physical effects of sound and how we can incorporate it in a mindful sense, using our bodies to navigate trauma, animals and how they handle trauma, and - ahh, just too much to mention here.

You’ll get a real charge off this one, no doubt about it. So much goodness from an awesome sound-loving and living individual. Get to know Jo Miller and acquaint yourselves with what she does! ENJOY!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 4 of Buddy’s Buddies!

So nice to see you again… You’ll like this week’s episode for sure, of that I am MOST certain…

Please welcome the wonderful double team of Bridget and Ian of Margate’s Clayspace Studio! Such a treat to spend some quality time with them. I recorded this chat just before I’d enrolled in the 6 week beginners course there, so I was very well primed for the road ahead! It absolutely sealed the deal for me of why people find ceramics so infinitely addictive and satisfying. I’d also heard about how wonderful they were so I was really looking forward to meeting them and getting the full scoop on everything that goes on in the building, including what led up to it.

“…it’s positive proof of your own existence…”

How beautiful is that, right? Goddamn. I feel like that perfectly sums up everything about it, doesn’t it… Words that only someone with that pure mastery could conjure. That’s Bridget right there! It was really cool hearing about not only her origin story but Ian’s too, and how they combined forces to create a safe, positive and inspiring space for total beginners and hardened, fired and glazed professionals to work in. Expect to hear it all, from Loughborough beginnings, to Akido, to mental health, to early studio visions, how ceramics will outlast all of us, to the Margate day to day, to ceramic slang (handy to know if you wanna engage in some fettling or blunging), technique and process, history, glazing and the importance of the imperfect and handmade. Also Clayspace resident Nina D makes an appearance, so that’s the voice you’ll hear ever so quietly later on… I left it in for context - you’ll understand!

Get involved and follow the Clayspace crew - inspiration for all skill levels, and definitely two lovely people who will make your day and put a smile on your face. Or if you’re already smiling - lucky you - they’ll make that smile grow even further. Please enjoy your buddies, Bridget and Ian!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 3 of Buddy’s Buddies!

Lovely of you to show up for the third one - got a goody for ya this week and it’s super exciting to share this one with you!

It was so nice to spend some time with Sorrell. I remember seeing her on the cover of the fantastic local paper here, the Margate Mercury, in front of her glorious jars of herbs and extracts behind her - you can absolutely tell that it’s her happy place, and it was entirely self-evident in talking to her about it all that she’s totally found her thing. We recorded this up in the top floor of the Chamomile Clinic, as the acoustics worked more in our favour up there but I always had the image of those jars of goodies in my mind throughout…

“We’re all using herbal medicines, we’re just not realising…”

Although the herbal treatments aren’t all that happen there. not by any means! I had so much on the agenda to chat about and I think a good amount got handled, but we could have gone on for hours longer… In the time she was kind enough to share with me though, we covered everything from how much of the world is still using herbal medicine, how ‘alternative’ is really ‘mainstream’, the Margate health community, the help framework she has for herself, beginnings in London, shamanic healing and visualisation exercises, cacao ceremonies, the 7 generations before and ahead theory, layers of reality, spiritual shopping lists, whether haters are a problem, soul retrieval, how she is a ‘plant puppet’, law of attraction and how you want Sorrell on your team in an apocalypse situation! And more! SO much more.

A lovely one for those of you curious to know about a side of the health and healing community that you might not have encountered before. We got to some real nice talking points with this one, and as you can hear - Sorrell is a true master of guidance and sort of steered the whole chat with finesse and ease. Ladies and gentlemen, your new buddy - Sorrell Robbins!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 2 of Buddy’s Buddies!

Thank you so very much for joining me for the second one - whether I am seeing you again after the first podcast or if this is your first listen, your ears and attention are entirely appreciated and I really hope you dig this one.

This is the first episode I recorded with more than one guest, and luckily for me those very guests were Bobby and Kate of Telegramme Paper Co., based here in Margate! We recorded this in their previous studio located near Dane Park, surrounded by a very attention grabbing collection of their own work, not to mention paraphernalia and amazing trinkets and (finally a chance to crowbar in my favourite word) tchotchkes. A tchotchke is a little decorative object. Love that word.

    “We are our own clients…”

We cover a ton of chapters, tangents and forks in the road as you can imagine, including toddler mornings, studying alongside one another, gig poster fascinations and legalities / codes of conduct, sketching fathers, their Eastleigh and Midlands upbringings, problem solving in design and illustration, the old days of Telegramme as well as its origin story and evolution, the two of them teaming up and growing more powerful, making things they would want to have on their own walls, being a tourist where you live, the idea of commissioning themselves, rules of threes in colour palettes, processes, the beauty of restriction, influences and heroes and not getting too close, Americana and vintage ephemera, family and work balance, and all in between!

Truly inspirational talk here from two masters of the game, with nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout and just a real uplifting one to propel you properly into the weekend and week ahead! Ladies and gentlemen, your new buddies - Bobby and Kate!

  • GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!

Welcome to episode 1 of Buddy’s Buddies!

I’m so happy you could join on the ground floor, the debut, the premier - it really is immensely exciting to start sharing these podcasts with you all at long last, and with any luck, long may that continue. I’ll do my bloody best, folks.

It’s a real treat to set things in motion by way of a full length chat with Dom Bridges from Haeckels. I’ve known about the company and the shop for a good while, and been a devotee of the amazing Instagram feed for a minute too, so it was excellent to be able to record this with Dom in his shed down the end of the garden and get the whole story. You get the full Margate experience too with the seagulls insisting on getting in on it too, and who was I to step in their way…

We begin with the intel on a trip to Hinase in Japan on an eel-grass mission, and from then on we cover much space and time, including what took place in Japan, his upbringing and parents stories (involving hairdressing, bookbinding, rock drumming, the usual), being a shy kid, the road from art school to London, early days working in design and directing, the perils of a beard back in the day, the madness of the advertising industry, finding a home in the town of Margate and the magic within, the transmission of the ‘Made Of Margate’ tagline and the responsibility of it, Haeckels House, the origins of the name, the marvellous team behind and in front of the scenes, the importance of showing up and being present, Indiana Jonesing it at every step, not having a plan and of course, the glorious sea bathing machine which now takes pride of place in the beach near the Margate clocktower!

It’s a packed one, people - I really hope you get a buzz off it, it’s immensely inspiring and uplifting, as well as being open, honest and frank, much like the Haeckels brand itself. A real pleasure and one that should take you through the weekend with a spring in your step and a glide in your stride. And certainly a very strong desire to go jump in the sea. ENJOY!
