If you look at the distribution of events — in the markets and in life — you’ll see that there’s a natural bell curve.
The most likely to happen events bunch in the middle.
But out at the ends of the curve, where the rare events are registered, there are small bumps and bulges.
Statisticians refer to these bulges on the extremities of bell-shaped curves as ‘fat tails’. Instead of tailing off as they are supposed to, the rare events seem to swell up, where you don’t expect them.
